bunch of jackasses

want to stomp all over the law and citizens of dallas, then when arrested want to use the law on their side

gotta luv the US of A

FYI in TX you can be arrested for your tags being "hidden"

Papa_Complex

You can also be arrested for being involved in an organized illegal event, even if you're just there to record it. The tags seem to be a trumped up issue.

The Dallas area is notorious for stopping the freeway. Personally I wanted to arrest the guy that kept brake checking the cop car.

Pffffffffft bunch of idiots.

Can't say for sure, but I think that's the same dude that received the stash hand off @ 3:17 in the first vid.

Pffffffffft bunch of idiots.

If I were an idiot, I'd be insulted by that...

Ruff Ryders? They like to shut down the freeway there. One day someone's gonna get pissed off and just ride through the crowd. Can't f'n stand those guys, they're a big part of why "motorcycle crackdowns" happen.

I'm fast becoming an advocate for the use of Stop Sticks, on running motorcyclists. That, or the rocket launched net system, that Tokyo police were testing for use against Bosozuku, back in the late '90s.

That's the general concensus (the hand-off, not the idiot thing).

We've got idiots like that, up here, who constantly spout the "I'll do whatever I want" sort of Jerry Springer teenage-girl-screwing-everyone bullshit. Fortunately they aren't actually that organized. The local Ruff Ryders are more likely to take part in charity rides, than they are to pull that sort of stupidity.

Altho I think he is the same guy who doubled back and scooped up his girl.

I believe you are correct.

The dude who got arrested...hard to say. I didn't see his plate, so I can't tell if he was "hiding" his plate or not.

Seems like a seriously nebulous probable cause issue to me. How would the cops know he was a part of that group? Could have just been riding down the road with a camera on his head.

I would gladly hand over my memory cards to him if I was just riding and came across them. I would hand them my license and say you can hold on to that and I will go ride with them and record every single license plate I could and then return for my license.

I would too, but as a matter of law, the cop should have asked for the camera instead of making up some (alleged) bullshit about a license plate.

It stinks, but not bullshit. Must be visible and legible from 50 feet, cannot be obstructed from view. This doesn't look like it would be visible from 50 feet. It's from the helmet facing up when the officer had it in his hand.

I pulled virtually the same shot from the video, to rebut the FTP crowd on a local board. The plate is fully visible if you happen to be a Hobbit, who is standing virtually under the bikes tail. When I made my original comment about the tag charge being trumped-up, I hadn't taken a good look at it.

the law is vague in TX, unobstructed and AT THE REAR of the bike, no mention of 50ft...........thats gives the officer alot of discretion

I just read the statute. Yeah, nothing really in there about distance. It could be that has been determined through case law.

It has to be visible. That plate isn't visible.

They have redacted all state law about placement of motor vehicle license plates. It has all been replaced with a statement the "Board" will make rulings on placement. The Board is with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

My original statements come from a few years ago when I was ticketed on the 998. My ticket was dismissed because I have a picture taken following statute 50 feet was the requirement. I believe it is still stated under motorcycle lighting equipment that it must have a little stock OEM light so that it may be visible from 50 feet.

Probably not a good reason either.

Too many of these laws seem only to exist to give the cops a fishing license.

Well, you're on it this morning. I had just gotten up.

I took a turn and I'm looking for where it states you are required to run a front plate on a car. We have a cop that likes to sit out in front of the track's driveway and ticket the cars coming out.

Where did you get this? Because this is in the transportation code for the current year.

Sec. 502.404. VOLUNTARY ASSESSMENT FOR YOUNG FARMER LOAN GUARANTEES. (a) When a person registers a commercial motor vehicle under Section 502.433, the person shall pay a voluntary assessment of $5.(b) The county assessor-collector shall send an assessment collected under this section to the comptroller, at the time and in the manner prescribed by the Texas Agricultural Finance Authority, for deposit in the Texas agricultural fund.(c) The Texas Agricultural Finance Authority shall prescribe procedures under which an assessment collected under this section may be refunded. The county assessor-collector of the county in which an assessment is collected shall:(1) implement the refund procedures; and(2) provide notice of those procedures to a person paying an assessment at the time of payment.

Transferred, redesignated and amended from Transportation Code, Section 502.174 by Acts 2011, 82nd Leg., R.S., Ch. 1296, Sec. 138, eff. January 1, 2012.

There were some major changes to the Transportation code that were effective January 1 of this year. All due to this bill that was passed: http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/82R/billtext/html/HB02357F.HTM

I was almost arrested for the same thing.

But, turns out I'm not a 22 year old boy on a gixxer after a pack of the same bike took over a freeway.

I'm not saying what the cop did was right. Hell, I'm shocked he waited until the guy was cuffed to take the helmet off. And, the way THAT went down was painful to watch. The entire exchange was tragic. My "favorite" part of the video was the backup officer stopping the already irritated traffic to cut across all lanes to exit.

I'm always amazed when someone, who is obviously so well behaved in the presence of police, has such a negative outcome from the encounter.

I've gotten fairly used to hearing people, up here, whine about their interactions with police.

I haven't been stopped in years (so now I've jinxed myself ) back back when I used to get stopped a few times a season on my bike, I would generally get a warning. Hell, one cop who stopped me for 30 Kmh (about 20 MPH over) in a 50 Kmh (30 MPH) zone took great pains to explain to me how unreasonably quickly the limit drops from 80, to 60, to 50. We then sat around and had a half hour long talk about motorcycles, in general.

And there are people on the local board who, for some unknown reason, get stopped frequently and are constantly asking for advice about how to fight their tickets. Then they start with the FTP crap, removing any doubt as to why they got the ticket; 'attitude test' failure.

I think that's the same video as the one that was posted second in the original post. But notice there is a cop with his lights on right away and the dude looks back? Yeah, if you weren't doing anything wrong, you might have wanted to pull off the highway and stop right then. Just a thought.
