I don't know how many of you heard about the C-130 that went down in S. Dakota last night, but one of my friends was on the flight crew.
He just got back from Afghanistan in April, after a ridiculous amount of tours, only to get killed on a fire fighting mission.
Fuck.
Rest in peace brother.

Bummer. I've seen dozens of those fire-fighting C-130's lately. Every local newscast shows one of them dumping orange fire retardant. They are amazing pilots that fly those huge beasts at such low altitudes and slow speed. You don't know how big they are until you walk up to one and go inside. My hat's off to every pilot and fire-fighter fighting our forest fires.

Any idea what caused it to go down? Those things are tough as hell.
My dad was an Air Force aircraft mechanic and I remember him telling me stories of seeing C130's and C123's being able to land missing most of the tail of the aircraft.

I lived next to a head airforce mechanic (dont remember his rank) that would always say tye c-130's were the biggest piles of shit ever made. Theyd have to fix something every time they landed. Even after training missions. This is at a base where half the planes are c-130's.

I'm told it was a combination of low altitude, low speed and major down drafts caused by convection.

They do require a lot of maintenance, but they are also quite resilient, being able to take a fair amount of battle damage and make it down safeish.

That's a shame, sorry to hear it.
I seem to remember another firefighting C-130 crashed like 5 years ago from losing its wings, like the main spar (spars?) completely collapsed. I believe there was video of it.

A sad loss regardless of who was on board, but my condolences on it being someone you know, AMJ.
