What exactly does the "Only accept reasonable GPS speeds and altitudes" option do?

After an "interesting" ride this morning, my track statistics was not as expected.

Well its made for driving and walking and maybe bicycling so I wouldnt be surprised if it thought speeds over 100 mph were unreasonable. I usually leave that option unchecked when I use it.
