What are your thoughts about doing this on a xb12r?

Complete and total waste of time and money.

Seriously, unless you are racing, why would you want to do this?

Why create work for yourself?

Only advantage is the ability of gearing changes. Belt is cheaper and less maintenance, and causes no damage when it fails.

for regular use, stay with the belt

the thing is that i have to drive to chattanoga to pick up a belt as its the closest one to me and that they are on back order, a chain and sproket is easier to replace and dont have to worry about running out of them in the future...

or just go online, buy 3 or 4 of them and have them for the life of the bike

Ding ding ding.

Buying one would do for at least a couple years.

what year is your bike? the reccommended replacement is 30k, and a guy I work with has 50k on his original belt

The new belts have no service interval. They're "lifetime" belts. They can and do break, but it's a crapshoot as to when it will happen.

Call up Gates in Lansing, MI and see if they can provide the belt. Gates makes the best belts in the world and may even make that belt anyway.

But seriously, newer belts last forever, unless you're putting down too much power or they ingest something (seen this before).

Or be a normal guy and do what Trip said.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the buell belt was a standard size for some industrial application or some shit... so while you may not be able to find one that has 'buell' stamped on it, you should be able to find one forever... Take that with a grain of salt though because after typing that, I kinda feel like maybe I just made that up in my head...

American Sport Bike carries them. When I blew my belt on the 1125, I picked up a new one from Lake of the Ozarks HD on my way by, then ordered one from ASB as a spare. Should be good for another 30+k now.

Give me the width and the length of the belt. Not the full length, just end to end.

Damn. I think your belt is 128 tooth. My timing belt on my engine is 103 tooth. Of course I'm not sure if a timing belt is strong enough to be used as a drive belt.
