View Full Version : Losing interest....

I'm having a stretch where my interest in riding has REALLY tailed off...I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about a "why?" and am drawing a blank. I'm not any more risk averse than I ever was....and I still enjoy it when I DO go ride...but...I just don't make the time to get out there as much as I have in the past.

Anyone else have stretches of casual disinterest in riding like this?

Yeah...
It usually happens around November\December and last to about March.

Maybe you should sell the bike and get a Ducati. Put a nice exhaust on it.
Get a cool helmet that says Brony on the side.

That's a great way to reinvigorate the ridin gland

I follow roadcraftnottingham on youtube. He purchase the new Tuono V4 and openly said it totally reinvigorated his passion for riding....

I have been pretty disinterested as well. I don't commute to work since I wear scrubs and also I eat breakfast and dinner in the car. Which leaves my days off to ride, but I have been so busy lately with the new house and just being exhausted with a new career and long hours at work that I when I do have a free moment I just want to lay on the couch.

I do need to get out more though

I lost interest for a while. Strange enough, it was the second year I had the track. Frankly, I think I burned out on it. I mean, we went through 11 sets of tires the first year. And I was driving the car and went through 3 sets of tires on a Mini Cooper. We weren't racing any of it - just riding like hell.

I think it turned into a lot of work for me. I took a few months off, which was tough working for BMW. I know - first world problems with my hand on my forehead.

But, I'm now back into it full swing. I'm riding on the street for my own entertainment again which hasn't happened in a long time. Pace yourself, man. You DID just get a new sportscar...

The car IS taking up quite a bit of my attention (and money  )

I still want the M109-R...no other bike out there right now fires me up like it does...well, except for the Triumph Rocket III Roadster...but...that will need to be a project for another day.

I had a more than three year stretch, where I barely threw a leg over. In my case it started with rebreaking a collarbone, in a non riding related incident, followed by a series of other more minor injuries. I got out of the riding habit and didn't get back into it, until I bought my new ER-6n a couple of years back. Even now, though, I'm more of a commuting rider than the tourer that I used to be.

I know the feeling, I used to take a nice 24 mile route to work (instead of the straight 8 miles commute, now I'm exactly 2 miles from work, and there is almost no justifiable reason to take any kind of long way.

I only find myself on the bike once or twice a week

I went through something similar.

I went from racing a lot to mostly trackdays and instructing. Then, I bought a new bike, had a baby, went through a crashing streak and seemingly had a major regression in my riding ability (speed).

All of the sudden, going to the track felt more like work than fun. I'd leave the track more frustrated than when I showed up. I came >ll< close to packing it all up for a few years.

I had been losing the passion for a while. A lost friend and a crash a year after that solidified my loss of drive.

Now I have no desire to ride on the road at all.

I did track only for a year after that, and had some fun...but that too just fizzled out.

With ME...it's age. The same things don't drive me that use too when I was 20.

I bought a dirtbike and returned to my roots. I LOVE that :rockwoot:

I too agree with trying a new type bike. Dirt or dual or cruise.

Borrow something. See if it butters your beans.

Honestly, what I'd LIKE to do is get a dual sport....and take my camping gear out into the wide open free range lands here in Kansas....ride out into the middle of no where until I found a spot that caught my fancy....set up a small camp...spend the evening reading...hiking about some....watching the stars...then ride back home again the next day.

I go through the loss of interest thing every now and then. Friends go down and don't come back, you find yourself with other committments that don't include the bike, you do more commuting then "riding" with it.
Then you get rid of it and call it a day. Next season you can't stop remembering the good times on the bike. time for another.
I agree with everyone above, change it up. Azoom's statement about the new car is also very true. New go fast toys tend to make everything else boring. LOL
A little time in the dirt always seems to bring the joy back to riding. Few rules to deal with. (except laws of physics LOL) No cars, and few people.
Your camping plan sounds fun as hell.

I ride the same bike that I rode in 1979. It was fun then and is more fun now. Mostly because I've had lessons. In the last five years I've had two classroom lessons from Lee Parks, and one track lesson.

Two weeks ago I was on my old GS1000 and stopped at a turnoff going up Lookout Mountain. I was about to pull back out when a BMW S1000RR zoomed past. It was the beautiful red, white and blue one. I tried to catch up. Usually I have no problem keeping up with faster bikes. But this rider must have had lessons too. He pre-leaned into a corner, cranked his helmet to look through the corner, and took off.

Now I took a demo on the S1000RR and know how spectacular the brakes and engine are, but for me it was slow getting around corners. I blamed the seating position, with my shoulders over the handlebars, and the too narrow handlebars. Since I was leaning on the handlebars, it was difficult for me to push them left or right.

Anyway, the BMW got stuck behind a car and I caught up, but then he passed the car and I had to ride like a maniac to catch up again. I'm sure the BMW rider enjoyed the ride, but I really enjoyed it. But even when I ride by myself, which is 99% of the time, I still enjoy it. And I hope I do for many more years.

I know the feeling. The poor Buell has barely been out of the garage in so many months.
I rolled it out, started it, and let it run for a while just so I can remember how it sounds.
(why does the only really decent aftermarket exhaust have to be goddamn $1k.)

I was thinking for a while that I'd finally just trade it in on the Triumph Thruxton, but now I'm thinking I may just sell it and be bikeless for a while. I have some other things that should be taking priority and I don't think a shiny new bike will be the cure for my disinterest (at least not long term).
Once I get that other thing taken care of, I may see about picking up an older bike. Something that I can develop my wrenching skills on... not so inundated with technology...
That's my thought for now. By next year I may be thinking something entirely different.

The truth of it? Honestly?

I'm most interested in modding out my new car....putting my time...energy....money...into that project. Sell my M109-R...and put those funds into some goodies for the motor in Z....and get a used dual sport next Spring.

If a season of that type of riding doesn't scratch the itch, I'll go get the Rocket III that I've eyed for a couple of years.

I just dont think its worth it to have a bike anymore. Insurance has gone nowhere but up, and riding season is shorter than a circus midget. This is my first season since 02 without a street bike. When I sold the others, the itch was back within weeks. But since I sold the HD, I haven't even seriously considered a new bike. Bought new golf clubs and did that all summer.

Don't forget the old GS 1000, 1100 and 1150. The engines were way overbuilt and the chassis has gussets everywhere. The electrical system is another story.

And I have an old magazine where they first tested the XS1100. They took it to the midwest and back to LA. And it only cost them around $50 bucks in gas. Nowadays that wouldn't even get them to SF and back.

Yup, I lost interest in riding around summer of last year and got rid of my motorcycles. Motorcycling has been good to me, but I found something that I enjoy more and requires me to not be maimed up.

It came in steps...first I got tired of changing shoes and putting all that gear on just to ride around the congested metroplex. Then I got more and more paranoid that everyone around me was on Facebook. Which wasn't really paranoia, all you have to do is look through a few driver windows to see a huge percentage of people are on their phones while they're driving.

Everyone here knows the pros of riding, but here are the cons that did me in...
- Gear is inconvenient
- Speeding tickets suck
- Riding in DFW sucks
- Drivers suck
- Death sucks
- Riding got to be boring.

You asked for convenient, not comfortable in 120F weather.

Seems like that would be a given, however an Aerostitch isn't really very convenient, just more convenient than a jacket and pants. You still have to put on the Aerostitch, boots, long socks, gloves, headphones AND get all your stuff packed into a bag, etc. etc. By the time you get ready to roll out I could already be half way there by automobile.

Hence my "or don't get caught" comment.

Very simplistic statement that offers no real solution. Speeding without getting caught means being extremely focused on where a cop may appear and adjusting speed accordingly. Indeed I find that it takes a good percentage of focus from actually riding and just isn't that fun to be constantly searching for cops.

So come ride up here for a week. I promise you that DFW will seem like heaven afterwards.

Your city is going to make some of the most congested highways and surface streets in America seem like they're fun to ride in? You think sitting in bumper to bumper traffic sucking in exhaust fumes in 110 degree heat (while wearing gloves, boots, Aerostitch, helmet, etc., sounds even remotely fun or entertaining? More power to you if you do, but its not for me. Pre-emptive counter to your probable counter....its not really any more fun no matter what the temperature.

Get a set of cameras and do what I do; post video of the idiots online. It's great catharsis. It might also save a life or two, since you're a carry State.

I bring a pair of pants with me, to work, on Monday. Take them home on Friday. Load up a fresh shirt every day, to bring with me. Putting on a two piece 'Stich takes about 30 seconds. A one-piece is about 20 seconds. Yup, if a couple of minutes a day isn't as important as the convenience of not taking that time, then you've definitely lost it.

Simplistic, perhaps, but accurate. You can pick your times and places, to avoid getting the pull. If you're misbehaving in city traffic, then you deserve the ticket. Yup. Simple.

Nope, I wouldn't call that fun. If that's all riding is to you, then definitely give it up. I would weigh the crap on Toronto streets against any other city north of the Mexican border, however, and it would seem that there are several organizations in North America who have rated our traffic as the worst. That's what 30 years of lack of civic planning, with epic growth, will do to you.

Doesn't sound even remotely fun to me. Not to mention the time it takes to upload, edit, and etc those videos.

We each retain or lose our sanity in our own ways.

I doesn't help that I ride a red italian bike now, so that instantly makes me a target. But I'm perfectly fine doing the speed limit on the bike, but get super impatient in the car.... :idk:

Well, it's salvage title, and I'm asking 4100, so that's basically the story :)

What was the reason of salvage?

I'm thinking late 70's CB/KZ/XS. All of those are pretty solid and usually only require a little tuning now & then to keep them running like a top.

KZ1000R??? Hell Yea!!!! :rockwoot:

Yeah, I'm sitting somewhere around the same lifetime mileage, if not more. My point is that if you're looking for reasons why you shouldn't ride, then you've already given it up. If you're looking for reasons to ride, then you haven't made up your mind yet.

That may be one of the best quotes I've heard recently about riding.

These days I just don't see the fun of commuting unless it's a twisty road or a bumper to bumper highway that I can split through. Otherwise, if it's just normal traffic, I'd rather take the car.

Plus I need to wear nice clothes to work (i.e. pressed shirt and wool pants, sorry but khakis won't do where I work), so the only way I could accomplish that is by driving to work Monday and bringing the other 4 days worth of clothes with me to leave at the office, to change into in the morning after arriving to work. Unless someone has a magical way of folding a dress shirt and pants into a backpack without getting them wrinkled.....I really doubt it.

I've always wondered about that.

I guess most of the people riding to work wear jeans/khakis and a t-shirt or polo.

For those of us that work in an office environment, smelling like exhaust fumes and looking like you've never heard of dry cleaning doesn't cut it.

I've lost interest... I sold the busa, dirt bike, and just sold the enduro yesterday. Actually did something really boring and put it back into the house with updates n such and bought a 20' x 26' steel garage. May just mod the S2000, not sure what to do about a bike yet.

Are you still thinking about relocating?

Are you still thinking about relocating?

Kinda gave that idea up.. Was down there in July and it was stupid fucking hot.. Even at night, it just sucked to be out of the A/C.. Besides that and everywhere you went was a major highway with tons of traffic all times of the day and I just didn't get a good vibe while down there.

My parents also tricked me into staying. They have a nice house and told me in about 10 yrs I could have it as long as I bought them a condo. So I decided to stay, make more money, and make it work hence the upgrades and extra garage.
