View Full Version : IOS6 vs IOS5

I finally upgraded from my 3 year old dumb phone to a smart/educated phone. I got the Iphone 4s. Mainly because it was the only smart phone that felt like a phone and not a mini-laptop that could maek calls. So far I like it. I've already asked Siri every dumb or perverted question I could ask it and now am moving on to other stuff.
Well the settings thing has that stupid "1" that won't go away and it annoys me. It wants me to do the IOS6 crap. I looked into it and seems like IOS6 is pretty nice. I think allowing Siri to put every dumb thought that pops into your head on twitter and facebook is pretty cool and will help ensure that I won't be able to run for President in the future.
My main concern is the loss of Google Maps. Does Apple maps suck that much? Is Google working on a Google Map app?
Do people feel it's worth updating to IOS6?

I'm not an Apple guy, but someone told me Google already released a new map that works with IOS6. A few Google searches should let you know if my source is full of it or not.

Google didn't, but someone else did. I forget the name of the app, but there is one that completely emulates the old one, but it's a lot slower.
Apple maps is not great, but it is good enough for most things. Don't expect it to be spot on accurate for everything.

Google did release an app, but all your other apps defer to Apple maps. So if you Yelp a place and ask directions, you get sent to Apple maps. It really sucks.

Google did not release an app. They have a web version you can access through safari. There is not an official google maps app for iOS. There is a third party app that will give you access to google maps and operates almost exactly like the iOS5 maps app, but is a lot slower.

Noted. I mistook the web shortcut for an app.
Maps+ is the google maps app by a third party. Looks like its got a different user interface than iOS 5, but has google maps.

I have yet to find anything wrong with 6. It's perfect!!

Apple maps is missing a ton of stuff. But given how new it is, it's expected.
They are saying google maps may be good to go by Christmas if apple doesn't block it.

I did the update. Had some friends say that IOS6 made a huge difference in the performance of the phone. I downloaded it and it did. Internet was faster, youtube was faster, apps were faster.
Messed with the maps. So far I didn't see much of a difference. It even kept the results from a previous google map search.
I don't have the 2.3gb it requires to update my mp3 player but it works.
However I wish Apple would do one thing over whatever software update they can think of. The same way you have the volume control buttons, there should be a "next" or "back" button for when playing music. Tapping the screen while running is a PITA. It should be a on the right side or top or something like that. Especially with the Ipod since it is at heart a mp3 player.

I've had the iPhone 5 for a couple weeks now, and had no issues with the Apple maps. Granted, I haven't gone anywhere rural... but then again, Google maps very frequently led me astray in rural areas anyway (saying a business or hotel was a mile away from where it actually was... even along a major highway), so I don't personally see a big difference.

What he said...There are forward and back controls as well as pause built into the Apple Earbuds that come with the Iphone. I use them all the time when I ride...bc I can still control them with my gloves on.

Quit talking to your damn cell phone.
As for the buttons. I picked upa pair of decent headphones with built in speaker thing. It's nice but I run...jog...waddle with the phone in my hand and would love for button control. I hate reaching up to use morse code to change a song. Especially if I want to skip more than one song because a super secret government agent put a bunch of ABBA on my playlists and I need to get past it.
By the way if Apple is listening, you heard it here first. If you add that in I want royalties bitches.

It shows traffic details. Not as nice as google, but it does have it.
iOS6 doesn't allow all features of bluetooth connectivity to my Pioneer head unit in my truck like iOS5 did. But I have an iPhone 5 now so I have to await the fix, can't downgrade. It only allows me to stream the music, the displayed song info, play/pause feature, fast fwd/rew features do not work. I can stream it to my unit but I have to use the actual phone to control everything except volume, basically. Apple is aware of it, I guess bluetooth connectivity for ear pieces are fucked too.
LTE is fast as fuck. Love it.

I just started a new job that requires that I work from home. They might kick in some money for a faster connection. It would triple my speed and cost me no more money. Plus, the part I do pay for may be a tax write off.

If you are working from home you can also deduct expenses for maintaining and using your home office (area). Things like your computer, desk / chair, office supplies, the electricity used to run it, etc. This is all assuming you aren't reimbursed for these things by your employer. If you use a program like Turbo Tax or Tax Cut for your taxes they have sections with calculators to help you with this.

I didn't realize when I got the phone that the 4s wasn't the 4g LTE-alpha bravo sierra nevada whatever. I'm actually thinking of trying to take it back and exchange it for hte 5. My phones last for 2-3 years and since I'm at school 150miles away from my fiance, we mentioned it'd be nice to video chat via the 4g network vs the 3g. She travels on business a lot too and hotel connections reaaaaaally suck. With Verizon, if you your the facetime it will use the 4g network but not count it as data useage.
She's going to get a new phone soon and it'll be a 4g one. Figured it'd make sense for us to go ahead and bite the $100 difference.

Look into that a bit closer. I'm not sure FaceTime is doable without wifi. There were rumors that they were going to enable it over cellular, but I don't think it happened.
There's an app called VTok that let's you google video chat on ios, though. Not sure if it got updated with ios6.
Facetime is allowed over 4G. Verizon got fined for not allowing video chat. They have to allow it, but it does use a lot of data if you are on a shared data plan.
Smittie, I would definitely go return the 4s as fast as you can to get a 5 for just LTE alone.

I read that AT&T allows Facetime over 4G but ONLY on the family shared data plan, not on unlimmited. So, the only way to use the data-intensive feature is on a plan where you will pay them after you go over limit. :td:

All the companies got fined by the FCC for it, so they should allow it on the old unlimited plan.
Looked it up, looks like the FCC is still investigating AT&Ts version of this:

I think it might. When I receive a call it gives me 8billion options including the option of using facetime. My fiance looked it up last night and said that it's basically like how mobile to mobile was before the unlimited plans.

I went to the store today to change out for the Iphone5. Well they didn't have any Iphone 5s (white or black) in 32gb but had 1 64gb at $200 extra. Or I could give them my phone and wait 2 weeks for a new one. So I'm not going to get the 5 and I'll stick with the 4s. I can't imagine 4gLTE to be that much faster or to the point I care.
Also WTF kind of business model is that? The store is packed full of fuckers and you don't have your hottest selling stupid expensive toys in stock? If I owned that store I'd be bringing those things in by wheelbarrows ready to sell and make some fucking cash and sign some contracts. Infact I think they said I had the very last 32gb black 4s in stock. And if I didn't have it I'd say, "hold on sir, I'll overnight that bitch right now and I'll call you when it comes in tommorow".
Anyways, I'm sure in 2 years when I can do the contract renewell thing they'll have the Iphone 6s on the 10gFAF(Fast As Fuck) network. But for now I keep my $100.
Also used the maps today. Worked great.

Then Apple blows more than I thought. They should build another Chinese factory and spit those damn things out.

Apple's pricing strategy is bs. Like I'm really going to pay $399 contract for a 64gb, versus $199 for a 16gb. That's $200 for memory that I could buy off Ebay for only $10-20 (assuming that Apple allowed you to add extra memory, of course...But they don't...How convenient for them).

And if the hotcake maker for Ihop was selling out they'd have another hotcake factory on its way. Ford was selling out of cars like Hotcakes back int he 20s and what did he do? He built more Ford factories and sold more Fords.
Also if they weren't so fucking busy retooling every factory for I'm sure the Iphone 5s that we'll hear about after Christmas and set to come out in probably June, they could make enough 5s.
I forgot about my external memory in my uneducated phone HS. That is some fucking bull. Do the other companies have that capability? I might be willing to go with the Motorola Max but I really want the Iphone becuase it feels like a phone and not a mini-laptop.

I did find that out about the Android stuff today which is fucking awesome. But I can't bring myself to get a Android phone. I felt the Maxx and I don't like the size or how square it feels. Plus they tried to make it really light and makes it feel cheap. I could get behind the Galaxy 3 and maybe deal with the size. But people I know with them have been telling me that unless you have that power thing from Ironman, you'll need to wear your charger as a necklace. My main goal in having a phone is to have a phone. THe other stuff are just goodies that I do want. I did look at the smaller ones but again, they felt cheap and many weren't in HD.
I tested out the 3g a bunch today. Wolfram-alpha computes no problem, webpages load just fine, maps works fast (though it was way off on one destination today) and it takes 1 extra second for the porn star I'm following on twitter's naked picture to load. Only thing I found that sucks is the Youtube app doesn't play shit that clear on 3g. Not a big deal, I'm not wasting data on Gangnam style.
With that being said, Hey Android people, if you're listening. I fucking hate Apple. Probably the only company I hate becuase they try to force you to use only their stuff and to pretend like there isn't anything else except Apple in the world. BUT they make good products. IF you want more customers, take your damn 64" LED TV size PHONES, make them heavier like a phone, shrink them a little bit and I'll set my damn Iphone on fire come next contract renewel. With the exception of College students or Doctors of Gender Studies who work at Starbucks, you'll own the smart phone market.

Exactly, a phone is supposed to go in your pocket, and I mean pants pocket.....You shouldn't have to wear a jacket just to have a pocket big enough for it. Some of us live in areas where we don't need to wear a jacket. Oh, and belt holsters are ghey unless you're Obama or something.
Phones should be small and tablets should be big. Some people are just confused. They go around saying the iPad is too big, and that they're waiting for the smaller 7" version.........Except wait a minute, even that one would be too big to carry in a pocket, so you would have to carry it in a shoulder bag or backpack, so why not just leave it at 10" so you have a bigger screen?
If you're just hanging out w/friends or shopping or whatever, all you need is your phone. If however you're flying somewhere, or commuting to work on the train, you'll probably have a shoulder bag or backpack with you, so you can easily carry a big tablet or even a laptop. Shit's simple......I don't get why people are demanding all these other choices.

It's all about the display size race. And if you want to capture the market and move product, you need a big HD screen. Big displays and thin housings sell phones; tried and true. As more people use their phones for browsing and video streaming, I don't see a change in direction coming anytime soon.
To Smitty, I definitely remember when the phones were getting REAL small. One of the last ones I worked was so small I could barely use the keypad, but it didn't launch in the US due to less than stellar GPS performance, and E911 requirement (one of the many rubs of phone design... you need physical volume for radiated performance).
Market demand drives design, not the other way around. When the mass market (not a few people on TWF) start picking phones with smaller displays and thicker housings, that's what will be available.
