View Full Version : Shake it up!

In your travels you have probably heard that Harley engines shake. That is a fact. You have probably also heard that Buell XBikes have Harley-Davidson based engines. They do. At idle the turn signals on my XB will jump around like they are trying to pick up broads at the club.

The engine in this bad boy will shake absolutely every single nut and bolt loose on this motorcycle if you let it.

Yesterday, while on a ride with some others, OTB and I switched bikes. As he pulled out of the parking lot a head of me I noticed the left rear turn signal dangling. :wtf: I think to myself. Upon inspection I notice both signals have worked loose. No biggie...as I the nuts are inside the tail section...so they weren't lost along the road. Lost a reflector...but who needs those. :panic:

Here is a step by step recount of how the turn signals were fixed.

Step 1. Put bike on rear stand.

Step 2. Remove cowl.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/markgraves138/New%20bike/IMG_1183.jpg

Step 3. Remove seat.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/markgraves138/New%20bike/IMG_1185.jpg

Step 4. Remove rear body work.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/markgraves138/New%20bike/IMG_1186.jpg

Step 5. Locate problem.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/markgraves138/New%20bike/IMG_1187.jpg

Step 6. Apply Lock-Tite so problem doesn't come back. Also applied to every bolt that could fall out.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/markgraves138/New%20bike/IMG_1188.jpg

Step 7. Reassemble and polish away finger prints. Job done.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m95/markgraves138/New%20bike/IMG_1190.jpg

Tools used:
Screw driver with TORX bit.

Also dialed in a little more preload while the seat was off.

I also likes to keep my shit clean...so I wiped down the subframe while the body work was off.

u sure the ol blue loc-tite will handle the vibrations? I woulda thought the factory, knowing the vibration would cause issues, would have used rubber or lock washers to prevent the situation.

Blue seems to work. Nothing has fallen out since I've put it one.

You might want to apply some of that blue lock-tite to your teeth so those don't fall out.

They are wearing pretty well. Better than I initially thought. I'll put another set on when they are out.

And get over the Harley keychain, ladies. They are sold at Harley dealers afterall. I realize you guys are afraid to ride Harley's....you might like them. Then what would you bash?

And for the record...they are not Harleys.

Overpriced pieces of crap and for the record I am not afraid to ride cruisers. PC still probably has pics of me on the rebel. I'll ride anything with two wheels including scooters, well maybe not the big futuristic lookin scootics. I'd rock a vespa at the gap.

If they aren't Harley's, why not get a new keychain?

Check your chin fairing bolts... the two in front that mount to the muffler. I washed my XB one day and noticed they were gone... completely gone with less than 3k miles on the damn bike. Luckily the other bolts hold it all together just fine, but those little bastards worked their way out pretty quickly.

Thats kinda what I was getting at when I noticed it. I realize HD owns them, but its not a HD. Thatd be like riding an MV and having a Harley keychain on it to.

Mine... aren't.

I'm estimating a bit over 6K on the front, a touch over 3K on the (2nd) rear.

Should have PP's on it shortly after ebbs leaves ND.
