View Full Version : The Hurricane runs again!

Ok, this is kinda tiresome, and I'm damned freakin tired.

When I got the Hurricane, as SOON as the fuel pump kicked on, it would piss all over the ground from the overflow tubes on both sides, until today. I started at something like 10am, and didnt even finish until about 7:30 or 8pm tonight.

I was told the floats were bad, uh huh, heard that crap before. it was like my 75 CB550, floats are freakin fine, needles and seats are great, but whats that beneath the seats? oh holy hell, I come across about an ounce of rust in the passageways, which would fall into the seat from time to time, and keep the needle from seating and closing properly. I guess I went into each carburetor like 4 times, along with spending some time tracing a tach wire to find out why that doesnt work.

Pulling the bowls off the carbs WHILE they're on the frikkin bike is far from fun.
I developed my own method of removing the screws and actual floats as well as the bowls, even the seats while the carbs are mounted on the motor. its a bitch, but CAN be done.

BUT, after many hours of cleaning, RE cleaning, and RE REcleaning the carbs to get all that goddamned nasty rust crap out(thanks asshole who didnt run a fuel filter) I can finally start the bike, have it idling, and running up to somewhere around 9-11k quite nicely and smoothly now.

once more the crazy machine lives to rip up the streets. now to hurry up and get a new battery, chain and fork seals, along with tires.

the lesson here, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, run a damn fuel filter inline on the fuel line. it makes my life easier when carb cleanin time comes round. seriously.

nice, my cane had a new fuel filter the second day i got it lol. be sure to check out your sparkplug wires (yes the cane has separate wires had a nice argument with the parts guy on that one) as after 20 years of riding mine had gotten untolerably loose and prone to popping out. ran soooo much better with new ones ;)

probably wouldnt hurt to clean the tank too. i used the kreem kit on mine like 8 yrs ago-two paint jobs, a accident, and a year just sitting, not a single problem.

pffft I'll just put the spare tank on it. sell the other one and let some other poor bastard deal with cleaning. :lmao:

Sometimes a float problem is actually the needle valve in the bowl. Some of them just have a flat metal "spring" that can get "altered".

If you have a manual as I'm always screamin for you people to buy... you can adjust the float level. Here I'm doing so with a depth gauge on my calipers

Now granted I understand you were able to fix yours without this... but just to teach others what is what.

Also, you could run some seafoam in it to help as well.

when I get off my ass I will. the beast is torn apart and only the tail fairings match the fender right now. my gas tank is 100% different paint scheme(its my spare tank) the damn upper is beat to shit, and just ugh. yeah. oh and my positive cable for the battery is not so positive. its severely corroded the hell apart, explaining some of my shitty idle problems.

heres one before today when I put the spare tank on it. I still have to sandblast the headers, and see if my friends set of YZF600 headers will fit, cause I hate thes 4:2:1 things that look like 2 EX500 Vance & Hines 2:1s combined on a 4 cyl.

I don't know if all Hurricanes use the same type of carbs (mine doesn't use a fuel pump), but mine has a fine-mesh screen on the intake side of each float needle jet. That's Honda's idea of a fuel filter.

You have to unscrew the whole jet to get to it. You won't see it if you just take the needle out of it. The screens could be clogged, missing, or have holes. And Gasman is right about the float level. CBR's run great with the right fuel level and
carb balance. In my view, the Haynes manual is better than the Honda factory manual.

I've got Keihin VG carbs in mine. never noted a mesh screen, in the service manual I've got on the laptop it shows there being a fuel filter between the petcock and fuel pump, like a big ole thing.

the problem was and still is that really I"m not seeing the filtration I need to be seeing. fuel filter I think is toast and needs replacement, which is only fair since I think its on the order of 20k miles and something like 10 years old. good thing I had a spare tank because the factory piece was FACKED TO HELL with dirt in the petcock and down in the bottom of the tank.

mine has SS line too but those pics are from me working on another chopper the other week...

You will be surprised where they put those fuel filters... those carb pics I put up are off a Honda Shadow Sabre and it ran a fuel pump on carbs. The fuel filter was under the swingarm next to the rad resv.

I suggest you pull the tank too... rinse it out and see what you get.... you may be surprised... I remember when I started getting clogged jets and found this coming out of my tank (pre pingle filter)

as of right now, I'm working on putting the bike together, after finding my positive cable was TOAST, and the battery went boom while on the charger. (lucky I had a spare)

hurricane 600s have a big inline filter on the left side just under the fuel selector

as of right now, aside from a small issue with my battery not holding a charge well, the bike is 100% functional. now if the UPS man would just get his ass over here with my damned master link I could install my new chain, and I still need tires.

Gas Man

Well I would just get a new battery then... and fuck those liqued acid ones... get a AGM battery. YOu could probably get a HD AGM if you take yours with you. They are easy to come by, 1 year warrenty (sucks but standard), and I have ran one on my bike for 2 years now...

If you want to be a badass, get a big boar...
