TATER

Tater is lookin into buying up a Harley since the "summer" riding season is done. In MA now is the time that people are worrying about being able to pay for heat in the winter at $4+ per gallon. So a lot of folks are sellin off the bikes. Been lookin at whats out there and spotted a bike I found interesting. Any harley folks want to chime in and let me know if you think it looks like a good deal.... I' m seeing them from 7 grand and up online in states that are sunny year round.

$4900

I was looking into this last month. I got a book from the library and read through most of it: Harley Davidson Sportster Performance Handbook by Buzz Buzzelli. Why the 883 or 1200 Sportster over the 1340? Here's what Buzz says: "A stock XLH-1200 stands 100lb lighter than any stock 1340cc big twin...and by changing to a few lightweight components, a Sportster's weight can be easily reduced by 30lb. Its integral engine and transmission case forms a lighter, stronger, more compact package than the big twin's pieced-together powertrain."

He also talks about the stiff chassis, right steering geometry, and short wheelbase of the Sportster. Plus you can go to 110 cubic inches. The engine is simple and is easy to hot rod. The book tells you how to get 100hp for around $2,500 (in 1992). He also tells how to improve brakes and handling. I highly recommend this book if you are at all interested in getting a Harley.

Not sure of that exact model, but a friend's father in law has a '92 883 and NOBODY wants it in trade.
Even the Harley dealer wouldn't take it on trade for a brand new Sportster :zowned:

If you have the extra $$$$ to buys some bikes and hold them until spring ( or unload them on ebay ), you could do well

I can't speak to the unit you are looking at, you need to know the milage.

I will say I had a 04 1200C Sporty last year and was EXTREMELY impressed with fit and finish and overall quality, throttle response, and brakes. The bike doesn't lend itself to really hard riding, so you end up cruising in a more relaxed mode. (50-55 MPG, TOO!)

I LIKE the sportster!

I REALLY like BUELLS!

OTB... you think that was nice... you should ride the new ones with FI, slightly larger tire and a few other goodies!

I say do it cause those are nice bikes!!

Do it. I'd damn sure by the new XR1200 if those assholes would bring it stateside.

It wouldn't be that hard to make an XR1200 from an older Sportster. In the mid-80's, Nick Ienatsch, who worked for Motorcyclist magazine at the time, made an Evolution-motor Sportster look like a late 70's Harley Cafe Racer (XLCR100), but with more modern brakes and suspension. I almost bought Harley's Cafe Racer in 1979, but the clutch was so stiff, I almost needed two hands to operate it.

They've called it the best handling, best performing Harley of all time. I'd buy that sucker for sure. Fucking love it.:rockwoot:

i just love my harley. it's so fun to ride. as far as $4900 for this bike goes, i dunno. it's an '84...that's an antique. def. snatch one up when you get the chance though. i don't think you'd regret it.

and i, too, over that XR 1200! i'd totally trade the nightster for it.

I wouldn't trade the Buell...but I'd damn sure have it as a 2nd bike. I absolutely love it.

As for the Harley in question...Tater, I'd look for something newer if you can swing it. Something with a rubber mounted engine and FI. The Sporty's went rubber mount in 04 I believe.

..Fuck yeah... Bike mags have mentioned handling and whatnot near levels of say a Super Duke... That gets my dick hard. Also, I've read of hints that Harley is going to bring it stateside...

As for that Harley? I wouldn't buy any Harley from the 70's or 80's... You can get something much newer for around the same cheddah.

Oh, and if you do, you'll have to change your AV.

sportys are cheap, but the fullsize harleys dont really depreciate too much. my pops just sold a 88 for $9000, and it wasnt a rip off

Depends who you ask on that one... The resale is ridiculous on them, but there's a grey area that is rarely discussed... Get any Harley between 3 and 5 years old... Nearly impossible to sell for price relative to something newer or older... Why? Cause techincally it's worth about as much as a new one, but doesn't have a warranty and you get older than 5 years and the price goes down significantly.

Yeah it takes say 10 years for a HD to start gaining or shall I say droppin less on value. The first few years you can easily loose your ass on.

i keep hearing that its coming here as well. fast bikes liked it, didnt score very highly though. 'course their scale is rather one minded. and yeah that one mono is with passenger

gd points, that 3-5 year resale is usually crap unless its customized
but this being a 84, its pretty cheap if it was out here. id go check it out. if it was earlier in the summer, if it was decent try and get it for 4, 4.5, put 500 in it and flip it for 6500 easily. getting close to winter, not a great time to be selling

Gas Man
09-15-2008, 12:42 PM
The trick or downfall of even customizing it... is that all it really does is make up for the depreciation. For example... The BDM used bikes that sold for $30 sell now for about $20. Now take mine... I got about 50 into it, and could sell it for about 30.

It is a 83 FXRS which is a full sized harley not a sportster. It has the 1330 evo engine which is a rubber mount engine to cut down on vibration. it has custom bars newer tank and updated gauges. I am lookin for something for cruising not racing so I think i'll pick it up.... If I were looking for a bike to take to the GAP I would never buy this but I am gettin older so I think this may be a good transition for me.

Age has nothing to do with it. If you want a Harley then get a Harley, but don't blame it on age.:idk:

do it! join me on the dark side. :D

lately i have noticed that i am getting slightly more pleasure from riding my harley than from riding my kawi. *gasp* did i just say that?! i find the riding position to be a bit more stable feeling for me. for some reason i feel a bit less confident with the bike and my abilities when crouched over the tank on the kawi. i wondered if it could be my age as well. i don't know what's come over me. i am just overly cautious now. i don't get those feelings stretched out on the harley though. :idk:

you're right. i should. it'd be a great confidence builder for me. i could use that. it's like i don't trust the bike anymore or something. a track day is definately on my to-do list.

i would never sell my 636, but the thought has crossed my mind once or twice. like maybe it's just the shift in my riding preferences with my age. but both my bikes are paid in full, so no real good reason to get rid of either one.

Oh yeah, like you're soooooo old!

Do a rat bike conversion on the Kawi. Yank off the fairings, slap on a set of handlebars. I've never felt comfortable bending over the tank and that's why I'm sticking with the naked bikes.
