Got a text yesterday:

I went down. Clutch slipped. Bike is fucked. Case cover is shattered. On 41 just south of Lol IL.

He said he had to rent a truck (because rental cars don't do one way rentals). He threw the bike in the truck and is still on his way home.

Sounds like he was just south of Chicago. I'm only 2 1/2 hours from there. I could have helped him out.

He said a really nice guy that saw it happen stopped to help him. The guy even gave him a ride to the rental place. I'm glad there are still good people out there.

Oh and the guy rides, so, of course, Ebbs hands him a card.

Damn! Well chalk up one hell of an experience for the Ebbster. He saw alittle of everything motorcycling has to offer on his epic journey. Now he has to do the walk of shame and earn his newbie wings in bike repair 101.

Mr Lefty

Hey all... yeah... I'm a royal douche bag... fluck'n looped a 600... :lmao:

As NtS said... I was leaving the light and got on it a bit aggressively... but only had the tips of my index and middle fingers on the clutch... and it slipped... causing me to roll into the throttle more... I got a good view of the sky... then was on my side... got up thinking... wow... I looked like a royal ass.

Got up and noticed liquid everywhere.... first thought was fuel... nope... OIL... fuck'n case cover broke... frame sliders did their job and protected everything else... but they bent themselves.

not sure what happened to my ankle... thought at first the peg landed on it... and it was broken... but I could move it up and down and put a little weight on it so I said no to the Ambulance and the ER... and went and rented a truck...

a Really nice guy stopped and moved my bike out of the intersection then off to the side of the road. and then drove me down to get a rental... he said he used to ride sport bikes and now has a custom... gave him a card... hope he joins up... I can't for the life of me remember his name... I feel like a fuck'n douche (i'm fuck'n HORRIBLE with names)

$850 later... I was in a budget rental van going back to load up my bike.

I drove up to Kenosha and stopped for some food... when I got out... I literally fell out of the truck... my lower leg hurt so fucking bad. so I limped in and got my food... called Tricare (my military insurance co) and asked the lady at the register where the nearest ER was... (thought it was a little odd that she gave me PERFECT turn by turn directions... but an impressive oddity)

went into the ER... there was a gorgeous woman at the front named stephanie... talked to her for a bit... then actually told her why I was limping in like a damn war vet... the ER was packed so it took a LONG ass time to get in... and even longer for the x-rays to come back.

Severe sprain... but he couldn't see a break. though he said I need to go get it checked out in a couple days as he couldn't see clearly with all the swelling.

I got out of the ER at like 930 or so.... and stopped for the night at 2... at that point I'd been up for 20 hrs... and with the pain... couldn't go further... pulled into a rest stop slept for a bit (3 or 4 hrs) then drove to my parents in Fargo.

ok... I'll shut up now... and attach a pic

look closely at the case cover... it's cracked in like 10 places... and has a hole big enough to stick a couple fingers through....

I'll get better pics when I get the bike unloaded

Trip

NCR makes hardened case covers, you know like the one you were eyeing on my bike...Mines CFM. Those damn magnesium ones bust too easy and I have always replaced them first thing if I thought the bike was going to the track.

Funny story though, saw a kid on a YZF600R loop out a wheelie one day and he came down so hard on his case it knocked the crankshaft out of its bearings...Totalled the bike.

Fortunately yours doesn't look that bad!

my deductible is $500... Case cover is gonna about that it self I think.... front fairing is slightly damaged... need a new frame slider..my fairings are already fucked from the tip over with my flat tire, and a gas can rubbing it when I hauled it down from AK. then there's my helmet, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves... all are covered...

Trip
09-18-2008, 03:38 PM
If you think it is enough to total it. Definitely turn it in. You will get more for your bike than if you sell it and then you can buy that new one you want.

cover for my honda I have found for $60, they aren't that expensive. The woodcrafts are like $200 retail and thats the replaceable slider ones.

I would laugh my ass off if I saw that. I ride a yzf600r too and you have to really try to get the wheel up in the first place. Very hard to accidentally loop it unless doing wheelies.

well I'm gonna have them replace all the plastics... that'll be over 1000.... the case cover 200 for a stock one (guessing)... so not enough to total it... the rest is gear... $500 helmet... $200 jacket, $120 pants, $200 gloves, and $180 boots...

funny thing is... I wasn't worried about my gear as it all held up great... didn't even hit my head... but the insurance lady said if I'm already over the 500... claim all my gear.

You might wanna 'splain to the folks how many pounds of crap you had riding on the pillion. Sport bikes wheelie at will with a passenger on the back and I image all your electronics, clothes, and camping equipment were at least that heavy. Add popping the clutch and yeah you could go over quick.:sorry:

Get the bike naked and fixed enough to ride safely and practice up on your stunting, then you can pretty it up again after you have mastered the wheely!

Um geared down is an understatment..I know the 1 down/2 up formula is popular but that is a big difference from stock. I am running 15/45 on an original 15/43 bike and it is noticeable, so I am guessing your 14/45? That makes first gear like Stage One of a shuttle launch!

so with out saying that your clutch slipped or anything like that what really happend, was it a true looped and over she went?

Sorry to hear about your mishap!

Oh and I think that the clutch lever slipped out of his hand and he looped his bike during an aggressive launch.

yup I was getting on it a bit harder than usual... but not harder than I've done before... it was pure lack of concentration and being too lackadaisical about it.

though I will say thank god for my gear... had I been wearing sneekers shorts and a t-shirt... I'd be in some serious pain right now... definite broken ankle... maybe a busted elbow... and lots of rash on my arm and knee

Thankfully I haven't gone down for that reason. I had a too fast/gravel/target fixation lowside, hit by a car, speed/painted line highside, oil leak lowside, hit by another car, lowside in T1 at JGP, lowside in T10 JGP. First one was in '03, last one was two weeks ago sunday.

Just got the estimate today.... Drum roll please.. $6786.67 considering that's almost 2K more than I bought the bike for... or just 500 less then the run for new... I'm think'n they'll total it.

looks like I'll be looking for a new bike when I get to Mississippi.

well the frame was scratched... the tank had a dent... the swing arm was scratched... every piece of fairing was gonna be replaced (already had scratches but they counted them anyways) and my rearsets were scratched as well as my pazzo levers... rearsets were 460 cause they couldn't get the exact ones... and the pazzo levers were 190...

Sorry bout your wreck and its good that you can live to ride another day but dont let this discourage you from Wheeling. You just need to learn better throttle, clutch, and rear brake control. What damage was all done to this thing.... I saw you cracked your cover and rashed some plastics is that it.... I would just replace the cover and not even go through insurance it isnt worth having to pay surcharge for minor 1k- $1,500 damage.

Mr Lefty
09-20-2008, 06:22 PM
if it was just that.. I'd still go through insurance... I've got full coverage and a $500 deductible... but the bike was totaled today... the frame was scratched, tank dented, every fairing scratched... swing arm scratched... fairing stay bent, headlight cracked... ect... 6786 worth of damage.

bike's only work 5K retail right now anyways.

Shit,Hotbodies offered me race plastic for $300 shipped. I'm telling you buy back FTW! You can get a Vortex/Woodcraft covers for under $300. When they give you the buy back figure, see if they'll take less. I got my '01 GSXR back for $150 from Nationwide. People tend to treat Insurance Companies as if they are doing us a favor by handling our claims but they are merely providing a service that we PAID for. You have to keep that in mind. The adjusters are paid to pay out as little as possible, you have to show that your bike was worth more or less in the case a of a buy back. Don't let them push you around buddy!

and yes... I'm not gonna pay over 1700 to buy it back. but I'm not taking less than 5000 for it... unfortunately race plastics are hard to come by for my bike... I've looked before... and I don't know if woodcraft or vortex makes covers for my bike... unfortunately most don't.

I'd like to buy it back and track it... be awesome.

$6800??? I know you could buy an entire new ZZR for that. Don't sweat it, just go to the next bike and don't look back...My first bike went like that, $6400 out the door and 1000 miles later $3800 worth of damage. I'm not reading all this shit... what is the deal with your bike Ebbs?

Very high damage estimate... only buy it back and track it if you don't plan to race. That bike would never be competitive in it's displacement class.

Otherwise you've got a track day machine for CHEAP and money in your pocket.

Probably want to get it measured up by a GMD computrack to check the frame/forks.

$4000? Don't waste it on a down payment. Time to get an all-around bike. Something used. Like a '98 or later ZX9. You can tour, race, commute, or canyon hop on it. Here on Craigslist, they give them away for around $3K. That's what I'd get.

Not true. I like the 2001-04 Gixxer 1000, any year Busa, ZX9's up to 02, R1's up to 05, any year RC51, 2004-on CBR1000, etc. But I really don't care for many of the newer bikes with super-high HP and lack of low and mid-range grunt. And with the way the economy is going, I'm just being pragmatic about buying used.

Why do I like old bikes? My CBR1000 only made 108 HP when new, equal to most 600's. But I can do full throttle from a stop on my old CBR1000 without worry of flipping it (sorry Ebbs). That means from 0-60, I can beat all the new, short wheelbase bikes (2.75 seconds for the CBR according to Cycle magazine, 1991). Check out the magazines if you don't believe me. And I could probably do that with a full load of groceries and beer in my saddle bags and tank bag. That mine has a better seat, bigger fairing, bigger gas tank, and a centerstand is just icing on the cake. The tonnage may be a problem for some, but there's no tracks around here anymore, so it doesn't bother me.

As for the ZX9, it is a fast, quick, comfortable, good handling superbike. Ebbs could take it anywhere in the country, and stay up with any newer bikes. Plus, I like green. And if Ebbs still has a place in his heart for Kawasaki, all he would need is liability insurance, and he could keep the extra money for speeding tickets.

Around 1998 or so, all the liter bikes went to the same size as 600's, but the ZX9 was still full-size until the end. That's important for some (big) people. When Sport Rider compared the Busa against the ZX9 in 99, the ZX was a full second quicker than the Busa 60-80 (could have been 80-100), but anyway, that's some power for an engine that's almost 400cc's less. Yes, I do like the ZX9.

Mr Lefty
09-24-2008, 04:14 AM
I loved my year Kawi... and the ZX9 was always something I looked at... but honestly... I'm no where near needing or wanting a 1000cc bike... I like the 600's... and I'm very interested in checking out the track.

eventually I'd like to have a bigger bike for the long trips... the busa has crossed my mind... but that's a LONG way away... I'm still young... and still have my flexability... and still of the mindset part of the adventure is doing it on something people think you can't....

shit half the fun was the reactions I'd get when I told them where I rode from and they'd say... ON THAT!? ... one of my brothers friends actually asked me if I hated my "taint" :lmao:

in reality... my ZZR wasn't uncomfortable at all... I could have easily spent another 30 days doing the TWFix US tour. that is if $ and time allowed. oh... and if I wasn't a jackass and decide to be johnny squid in Indiana.

When Sport Rider compared the Busa against the ZX9 in 99, the ZX was a full second quicker than the Busa 60-80 (could have been 80-100), but anyway, that's some power for an engine that's almost 400cc's less. Yes, I do like the ZX9.

I like your style.

Go ahead, get a GSXR 750... It's literally a 600 with the motor punched out 25% bigger. :dthumb:

and most 900s are literally punched out 750s  prob goes to explain why my bike redlines at 12k. really curious what the rod ratio is. anyway mister ebbs i agree with no worries. a used zx9 would be an awesome addition and dont count em out too soon. bigger bikes are seriously easier to ride down low. no need to rape the throttle

$4000? Don't waste it on a down payment. Time to get an all-around bike. Something used. Like a '98 or later ZX9. You can tour, race, commute, or canyon hop on it. Here on Craigslist, they give them away for around $3K. That's what I'd get.

Why the hell would anybody want to get a 600lbs bike when there's bikes out there that weight 2/3rds that? Lemme rephrase...Why would any 20-something-year-older want to get a 600lbs bike when there's bikes out there that weight 2/3rds that and put out way more hp?

Wrong, dumb answer. It's not about me. It's because they're like computers...they get outdated. Less appealing to the younger crowd. No Worries is just stuck in his old ways, just like I'll probably be 15-20 years from now. Hell, I'm getting that way already with music. I barely like anything new, especially hip-hop. All that shit is garbage now.

Dlit... his answer to your question is in the post you quoted... that zx9 is gonna be more comfortable for cruising, touring, and a bit more stable as it's heavier.

but really... I just don't want a 1000cc... and as much as I loved my ZZR600... I don't want another... I would like to try a new 600...

I'm still dumb enough to try touring on it... but I'd like something a bit newer...

I say it depends more on the 20something in question.
One that was raised that always had money and therefore the latest and greatest growing up, will probalby still prefer the newest.
Those that had enough to just get by will look more toward the economics and usability of the item, rather than if it is the "best thing out there"
This is not always the case, and maybe it's just where/how I've been raised too. :idk:

I'll chock it up to different strokes for different folks. The older, heavier bikes looks-wise and specs-wise just can't compare to the newer bikes. And I'm not just talking about sportbikes.

They don't make bikes that are stable and comfortable anymore? Just as stable and comfortable but without the outdated looks.

well not that they're not stable... but with shorter wheel bases and lighter weight... they're less stable in wind.

and as far as comfort... sorry... but the new bikes just aren't as comfy as the old... with the more relaxed ergos and thicker seats... when they were street first... track a distant second

I'm not talking about just sportbikes. The ergos of the old sportbikes are pretty much the same as a sport-tourer nowadays.

And most important on the newer bikes...FUEL INJECTED!

I'm not gonna lie, I'd probably wanna Rip my Hands off if I rode my Zx6 as far as Ebbs rode his ZZR...The Ergo's on Streetbikes are no match for a Cruiser or Sport Tourer.

My bike was Carbed... and NEVER had an issue with it... even in Early may in AK(which is VERY EARLY SPRING for AK) 30* mornings... bike took 2 times to crank over... granted it needed a bit of choke but I set it then turned it down as the bike warmed up.

and I see what your saying... but when these motors can easily run 2-3x longer than most will see with proper maintenance then why spend double the money just for a newer bike?

it comes down to preference... I'm torn between the two... I don't like assuming others issues, but don't like taking the big hit on $ of buying a new bike. I'm the same with cars... though I know how to work on my Truck inside and out... so I'll buy a Toyota pickup in the worst condition if it's a deal. bikes... not so much. so I'm leaning towards new.

I dunno... Kat rode 2000 in 5 days... Rae rode up from and down to FL on hers... they both have very new model 600's...

The key to my trip was days of rest. I always had 1 day between trips to relax. didn't plan that at first... but I cut some "fat" from my route... and was rewarded with a few more days before Indy.

I did have a couple long routes... AR to Rae... 904 miles (cause I got turned around for 50+ miles thanks to GPS fuck'n up in MS) and Dayton to ND 1095 miles but ended up being 200+ miles as my bike decided it had enough miles for that month.

yeah just get a tank bag to lean on at times, and an Air Hawk seat pad... I let drewpy use it on his trip with OSP earlier this year... FUCKING AWESOME if you do long trip in the saddle. its $125 or so... but so fucking worth it. but you can't ride aggressively with it... as it grips your ass and won't let you slide off

Ur right and that does make a big difference! With my size I can rest my head on my tank bag when riding, as well as shift around. I got a pro gel seat pad for the trip too, took awhile to break in, but after about 1000-1500 miles it was comfortable enough that the wear on my body was much less, seat wise anyway.

Any trips you begin taking on bikes like that are a bit of a body adjustment thing. Ive taken enough long rides, and done enough all day rides to acclimate myself for a long time in the saddle as well as lil tricks I use to spare certain body parts..."spider monkeyin"!

The 1998 R1 weighed 448 lbs (wet). The 2008 RR weighs 439 lbs (wet). When I was in my 20's all my friends wanted to wheelie. They had H1's, H2's, and RD's. Great wheelie machines, while I had a GT750, great for everything but wheelies. The twenty-somethings I see today still want to wheelie. Going downhill and in third gear no less.

...No Worries is just stuck in his old ways, just like I'll probably be 15-20 years from now. Hell, I'm getting that way already with music. I barely like anything new, especially hip-hop. All that shit is garbage now.

That makes me appear like a Luddite. I may be. Last year, I did a demo on a Aprilia Tuono Factory. I had read so many great things about it. I expected it to be so much better than my old bikes. The brakes were stellar, but the bike stumbled away from each light, the seat was unbearable, the riding position gave me cramps, and the mirrors were useless. I didn't test it for wheelies, but after twenty minutes, I couldn't wait to get on my big, heavy bike. As for Hip-hop, I didn't think anything could be as bad as Disco, but I stand corrected.

Dlit... his answer to your question is in the post you quoted... that zx9 is gonna be more comfortable for cruising, touring, and a bit more stable as it's heavier.

At Denver's altitude, any bike has already lost 10 percent power. If you go in the mountains, you lose another 10 percent or more. If you go up Mount Evans, you probably lose 50 percent. That's why I like liter bikes.

And I'll tell you a secret. You can blast around the canyons here on any bike. Brand new R6 or 35-year-old RD. Half of the curves around here are blind. Do you want to go around a blind corner at full speed? The main reason I like a liter bike is for passing a vehicle. This is where horsepower doesn't mean shit. I need torque, tons of it, and at low rpm. Especially going uphill. There aren't many straights on the roads I go on, so I need to get around a car in several seconds or less. Plus brake and lean for the next curve. God, I love it here.

I hear what your saying... and I had this exact conversation with a friend of Rae's... actually he's a member here...

but any idiot can ride a liter bike fast... just twist the wrist... the torque is gonna get you up to speed quick...

a 600 takes more skill to ride fast as it doesn't have that torque or power to cover your mistakes. I'd rather learn how to ride the 600 right... then possible (probably not though) move up to a 1000 where I can apply that technique. ya know?

not saying every liter bike riders are all idiots... just that I wanna learn what I can from the 600 before (if ever) I move up

I'd have more fun blasting around a twisty mountain road on a 35 yeard old RD350 than I would a brand new GSXR. Of course my SuMo would probably be more fun that either, plus a hooker.

Well maybe you would but I owned a RZ350 and the power band was as thin as a cunt hair. The tires weren't radial, the suspension was weak, the brakes made suggestions to the speed of the bike and sent feedback by Pony Express.

As I've mentioned before,I LOVED MY V-MAX!!! But to look back with nostalgia colored glasses and state that it's a "better" bike or more "fun" than my GSXR.....:sorry:
