I had this thread going in the mods corner at the other site, thought I would bring it here.

I am sure most of you have seen this video:

Well I have always wanted to do this and since I am in the process of building a home, I decided to buy the shit out of some christmas lights when everything was on sale after christmas.

Well I started the purchasing. I am going after a fully controllable system that will be sequenced to music and will have dimming effects. I think I am going to start off with a 64 channel system to begin with and hopefully get it up a lot more in the following years. Basically I will have control over 64 strings or structures controllable the first year.

I am going to transmit the music over FM so I don't have to deal with speakers. I will be building boards myself which is the most time consuming task.

Yes, yes, I know it sounds like I am all full of christmas spirit, but I am doing it for evil reasons. I want to be the guy with best christmas house in the neighborhood, but also be the biggest asshole at the same time. Basically I am going to set it up to weird schedules, so no one really knows when it will be on and then other times have it look like it just isn't working properly. Maybe later have it play music that just doesn't go with christmas.

My lights that I returned, found em a lot cheaper elsewhere. I need to get a new pic of the new stockpile. I got hundreds of strings of lights all for under $100.

My controller board working:

My controller box in process of getting put together:

That's all I got right now, still got many months of planning, programming, and soldering.

Yeah, it's pretty geeky. That's alright, I'm an engineer I have accepted geekiness long ago.

i have a house... i didn't build it... it was already there

there are some xmas lights on it...
nothing to that extent tho...

but i am not an engineer... so therefore, i cannot afford the electric bill that would ensue after doing such a thing.

I did a kick ass story on that song in December. A local VoTech wired up the outside of their school to that song. I was a solid piece, in fact, my best work to date.

I can't wait to see how this turns out... it may be geeky, but it seriously bumped you up like 12 points on the cool scale (not that you cared  )

what you need to do is put some lights on your bike w/ a controller, and ride around knoxville causing accidents.

So Trip... set me up one... I'll buy it off ya!

why? you'll just end up spending twice as much as you paid for it putting chromed flames and other parts everywhere and practically turning it into a completely different setup.

Probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 100-150 strings.

that's not the hard part, let me get a photo of all the other boards I have left to build, there is 32 remote boards that will have to be placed all over the yard.

Pretty damn cool! You should put some motorcycle themed things in there somewhere.

There's a guy in Cincy that has a similar big setup with tons of lights and he was forced to buy a commercial power line running from the street. He said it was cheaper in the long run than running everything off the power line that came with the house. Pretty sure he does it every year though so if you're not planning on doing it for the next 10 years you might be fine...dunno.

This is going to be cool! Can't wait to see what it looks like. Get some looong extention cords and "borrow" some power from "that neighbor" you don't like. HAHA

Wera yellow plate is one of the noncustomized usertitles. He isn't racing wera. It's just the natural post count based usertitle.
