I was staying at some hotel north of Indy for MotoGP. Ran into two guys drunk in wheelchairs in the hall.. Can't for the life of me what the hell your names were... but I think you guys started this thing. Told you I'd check in, so here I am. Profound, isn't it?

shit i wasnt even hung over the next day... i've developed such a tolerance to beer i dont even think i get them any more. just 100% guilt the next day. for instance i feel bad about putting nail polish on the strippers boobs last night. i feel worse for putting it on the girls face's who took me there. (ya right it was hilarious).

glad you stopped by though, i was curious if you'd see pass my drunken ramblings and actually stop by, we're always looking for people with something to offer.

welcome to the site buddy. what did you race, tz's, rs's, etc?

The free beer was certainly appreciated!

I have a Honda rs125, and a Yamaha tz250.

I got the 125 in '00 from Peter Hoffman out in CA. He was a gpra national champion (used to race with the likes of Vickie Bell), went on to do some European GP before he crashed hard and messed up his right hand. The bike has been through a few changes.. It was a '96 (arguably one of the best engine years), but has '00 cases, a '97 frame, magnesium rims, and lots of other goodies. I've also stuffed the cases and done some cylinder matching/porting. It's a quick one. Due to the engine configuration, it has a lot of overrev and high speed power, but is not as torque-ey as the 96 engine it came with (which would wheelie in 2nd gear, but have NO top end). Obviously, different powerbands are needed for different tracks. So setup is a key factor.

It weighs in at 160lbs, puts out around 40hp. The power band is like a light switch.. nolthing until around 9500rpm.. then it wants to rip itself out of your hand. It's a hard bike to learn, but an easy bike to ride.. but a really hard bike to go fast on. High cornerspeed is the key. Gas it until you think you're gonna die.. then wait another two seconds. I put a brembo radial brake master on it.. I can go from 6th gear to 1st gear and have the rear end in the air with one finger. Crazy. It tops out around 120mph, and on long tracks, the draft is important.

The TZ is also a 96, but heavily modified. I got if from a friend, Steve Scott who had done the full AMA 250 season its' final year (04? 05?). He had some top ten finishes on this bike. It's got a full charge electrical system, the cases are stuffed, B-kit cylinders, overbored carbs, jolly moto pipes.

It weighs in at 220lbs, and produces about 85hp. The thing is a friggin rocketship. And that's an understatement. The powerband is a little more forgiving.. it comes on a bit smoother.. but it pulls HARD. And I mean HARD. Fantastic bike.

I do all my own work.. suspension, tuning and wrenching. I do all my own engine rebuilds, etc. While some think the bikes are a pain, due to higher maintenance thhan normal, I find that it's a positive factor. You could take either of those bikes apart to the nut.. and I can tell you what every part is, where it goes, and what it does. It really helps when you race to know your bike at that level of detail.. Of course, when I started racing these things I had NO idea what I was doing. I was lucky to have pitted with a bunch of really good two-stroke guys from day one. I learned a lot froom them (and have since passed down quite a bit of knowledge to others... that's how it works).

Anyways, there ya go. Here's an onboard clip from my bike for the warmup lap at the can-am 125 nationals at Mosport in '05. I got third:

I haven't done much racing since 06 due to time constraints.. but I do teach track days at NHIS. It's fun to show the big bike guys with snotty attitudes how raw power really means nothing at the track :D

Enjoy!

yep, I'm a typical Masshole *laugh*

Can't say I've seen Christopher.. but there are a lot of organizations that run track days at NHIS. I used to teach for Riverside Motorsports now and again. I taught a lot of Team Daemon track days, before they kind of dissolved. Now I mostly teach for Moto Market. I like them cuz it's a totally low key track day.. Paul doesn't pack people in.. he's not looking to make a ton of cash, just have a great time, unlike other organizations that do it just to make money and pack people in (whose names I won't include).

NHIS sucks.. i started racing there with CCS, and once I started going to "real" racetrack (like Mosport, VIR, Mt Tremblant, mid-Ohio, Vegas, etc), I never went back to race at NHIS. It's OK for track days, but is dangerous for racing, IMO. I've lost a friend or two at that track, and have seen some pretty nasty crashes.. involving walls. No fun.

Wow Joe... awesome info on the two strokes. I have a buddy who has an RS125 and he said the same thing... the powerband is so narrow he's still trying to learn how to ride it. I'm hoping he'll let me take it out at a track day ;)

And yes the 250 2-smokers are INSANE... I want to ride one. Many people automatically think the displacement means they are slow... but holy shit are those things fast.

You instruct at moto market track days? That's awesome, I've actually been meaning to get to one of those. I have mostly done Tony's, I also did my Penguin school. I am going to race LRRS this coming season at NHMS so I imagine I will be doing less track days... but I'd love to come check out a motomarket one and meet you.

If you haven't instructed Tony's or Penguin then I probably don't know you but this is me and my bike:

Yeah... they did modify T1 to be safer after there was a fatality there. But still, by no means am I saying NHMS (btw that's the official name now) is a safe track, though. I like to think of it as "unique"

They are planning to construct a new road course over the back of the hill and put more NASCAR grandstands where the current T3-T10 area is. This is projected to begin within a few years, I think.

Where is your friend riding? NH"M"S ? Is he racing?

You'll find that Motomarket days are far more laid back and even a little less restrictive (since the headcount will be lower) than the track days you are doing now.

Nice bike, btw.. you gonna race that? If so, you better get some race skins!! It's not a matter of *if* you crash...

Come to a Motomarket day and I'll let you take the 125 out for a spin, assuming you don't ride like an ass. :D Be prepared though, at Loudon you shift the 125 a total of 28 times *per lap*.

A good friend of mine died in '04 after he had brake failure on his Duc and hit the T3 wall. Another friend of mine hit the T3 wall, and flew so far he bounced off the T10 fence, and was in ICU for a spell... and one other 125 guy I know ended up hitting the tire wall outside T6, abut walked away with "only" a concussion and an amazingly bruised forehead. The last two got so shaken up they both gave up racing. the list goes on and on..

I find that even though I'm only teaching track days, I have absolutely no desire to go fast at Loudon. I used to do 1:20 flats there, but probably wouldn't break 1:26s if you paid me *laugh*. It's a by-product of racing at "real" tracks (as I stated earlier). Loudon is a great track for Motards and Karts though.. In fact, karts hold the lap record for Loudon, except that they don't use the T12 chicane.

btw- if you wanna go fast at Loudon, go spend a weekend at Mosport. Nothing like some 6th gear WFO blind turns to make T1 at Loudon seem like a bad joke..

OK. I'm done rambling... again lol

btw- Marco- thanks, and nice Napolean quote..!

I caught you a delicious bass....

Oh btw Christopher.. the 125 is gp shift and has a semi-automatic upshifter.. so once you get rolling, you NEVER use the clutch.. keep the gas pinned and bang away to upshift, and roll it off and bang away to downshift...

Yes it's just a trackday acquaintance of mine who often pits near me, Roland. He does all the Tony's days, and he'll be testing the 125 out at the new NJMP with me this coming long weekend. I don't think he has any intentions to race.

Yes, I am racing the R6 next year. Look a little bit closer, and you'll realize that there are already race skins on there ;) Along with number plates, just awaiting some red numbers... :rockwoot:

You're right, T3 is a hairy place to crash... I've crashed there but came out unscathed. But T8 is a much scarier place to crash in my opinion because you're going so fucking fast :panic:

You're right that Loudon is a great motard track, I intend to get a little 'tarded there next year in addition to racing my 6 :D

It's funny that you consider running a 1:26 to just be 'relaxing', since that's roughly about my best time .... I'm slow... but working on it. I think once I start racing the competition should easily pressure me to go faster... I feel like I ride with a decent amount in reserve at track days. Also, there are the passing rules and stuff at Tony's.

I have a friend who does cars at Loudon and he's made the trek up to Mosport... he said it was AMAZING. I really want to ride more tracks... doing NJMP this weekend which will be my first track besides Loudon.
Oh btw Christopher.. the 125 is gp shift and has a semi-automatic upshifter.. so once you get rolling, you NEVER use the clutch.. keep the gas pinned and bang away to upshift, and roll it off and bang away to downshift...
That sounds like fun... and awesome that it's GP because that's the only way I roll :dthumb: I would like to ride yours, sounds like I really need to get myself to one of these motomarket days next season ;)

There was one that a friend of mine did recently that I wanted to join him for, but the scheduling just didn't work out. You probably saw him, Manny... he is an orthodontist, so he has "The Orthodontist" on the back of his leathers in the Rossi font like "The Doctor"... he has an AMAZINGLY built up DRZ400SM, and a really really sick Ducati 749R.
BTW...I'm a Sox fan too.
You could say the same for me.
