K peoples, who's got an Iphone and have you jailbroken it?

Need some input, greatly considering it, but wanted some firsthand knowledge before I do so!

I'm already on At&T, no worries bout a service switch, I'm just interested in the features available once you jailbreak it. Is it worth it?

i'm a tech tard...meaning I can make it thru the basics, but well, then I need helps!!

Jailbreaking an iphone=cracking into the systems that Apple limits you to so that they can control what you pay for and what your phone can do.

For Example, your basic iphone has a black background and each individual app you have on it (like folders on a desktop) are individual, no grouping. You also have no way to take video on an unbroken iphone. Nor can you customize ringtones for functions like texts, emails, etc., only calls.

Jailbreaking it allows you to change the background to whatever YOU want, to dd programs that allow video, to create folders for the same types of applications, and to use whatever tones you like for different things.

Plus lots more.

I know I can break it and restore to factory if needed, but I'd like some input from someone who has tried it.

So without this jailbreak you would have to pay to do all those things?

Actually without the jailbreak you cant even DO those things...not sure of the techy way to put it, but basically my understanding is its like a video game...capable of WAY more than you can do unless u have the cheat codes...

was doing the jalibreak as i was typing that...the iphone is a mini computer, but its potential is limited by apple...and by jailbreaking it, you are effectively opening it up to use more of its capabilities and potential...

just finished breaking it...i'll let ya know how it turns out...

Thats bullshit. Why limit anything? Put that sucker to full power from the factory. What a bunch of dicks.

She means "unlocked",without this procedure she won't be able to access much of this content at all... the original I-Phone has many hardware capabilities that Apple/ATT saw fit not to include in it's software for various reasons. Some of which were concerns over phone functionality but most were centered around the inherent limitations of the ATT infrastructure. With the phone unlocked, she will be able to access literally hundreds of 3rd party programs and applications.

Seems to me that it should be available like that from the factory. I'd be unlocking that asap as well.

Well, with the phone unlocked she will be opening herself to possible glitches, including freeze-ups and complete memory wipes. They set the phone up to operate at a level they can feel comfortable marketing without undo concern over functionality and repair. Something that Microsoft did not do with X-Box for example. They went the safe route. Especially considering that they went with ATT to be their sole carrier. At the time of the original I-Phone launch,ATT didn't have the bandwidth to accommodate all of the I-Phone's potential,so they limited what it could do to forestall the problems that can come from trying to "maximize" your system. Of course, they also want you to only be able to use their products and pay the fees that go along with them... Just as Buell would rather you only purchase Buell oil, parts, accessories, gear, etc for your bike.

We have lovely SUCCESS!!!!

Tig, depending on the model someone has, it necessarily isnt a good idea, and no, i dont mean "unlocked", i mean literally, "jailbroken" as thats what this is called...what I want to do is jailbreaking, not unlocking it for another carrier.

If you have a first or second gen iphone its not recommended as Tig mentioned because of the glitches that kept occuring in the standard systems. However with all the upgrades and errors fixed on the new models, like my 3g you should be able to safely do this, with the option of a full system restore if you have problems.

So, that all said, I did it, took me only a few minutes to do the "break", been playing with new features and exploring everything at my finger tips...he he he...if youve got at least a 3g iphone, i recommend checking it out at the very least!

Oh and I agree that whether it's the I-Phone or any smart phone, you have to try out the different apps and programs for it!!!

A friend of mine got the HTC Touch from Altel ($100) and with the help of the internet, we've changed the crappy browser, changed the keyboard, installed a PS clone and we think we can get it to be WiFi (still working on that one...)

I almost picked up an iphone the other day because I need a new phone and I wouldn't like to try a new provider. Wasn't convinced it was worth the big price tag though.

Glad to hear it is going good so far. I would be interested on how it continues to operate.

friggin awesome!

I thought this would be much more difficult than it was, I am thrilled at the results. the best part is, it doesnt affect any of my normal Iphone functions, and I can add apps to make the current ones better or take any current and use different ones. Hope urs is going as easily!

Theres so much to be said for a phone that you can do everything with! Being something of a toy junkie, I am wondering how I ever lived without the crap I can play with now! Sad, I know.

For those wondering, there are a plethora of games, every type imaginable to any user, internet access all the time (as long as you have service, but where is that an issue these days?), useful items like pda functions (calendar, reminders, etc), book apps (i no longer have to carry a book with me everywhere I go!) and so much more...the lists are endless!

Rae...does the internet access cost extra per month or is that now something you can tap into via wifi for free with this jail break?

And if you dont mind me asking...what do you pay per month for ATT service with the iPhone. I have ATT and the contract is up in 3 weeks...I've been thinking I'd switch to Verizon but I'd like and Iphone and it's easy to stay with ATT.

Ok, the cool thing about the iphone is that for $30 a month (plus tax) you get unlimited internet access and the full package needed for optimal iphone usage. Then you add in whatever plan you want, with its features and your good to go! For me, since I am on a family share plan with someone else, I dont use any minutes and only need unlimted texting plus the iphone package, I am paying somewhere around $50-60 a month, versus the $100 a month to verizon for only minutes and unlimited texts...

FYI, iphones are only capable of SMS messaging, but by jailbreaking you can do MMS!

My wife and I are on the same plan...mine being the primary phone. We are currently paying 90 to 100 dollars a month on two shitty phones. We've got something like 5000 minutes to share between us...and obviously we dont come anywhere close to using them...Since calls to other ATT customers are free.

So we could probly get away with a much cheaper plan and at the end of the day pay about the same or less with an Iphone.

The person I joined up with is actually SAVING money. They went from the Blackberry plan to the iphone as well, kept the same minutes and other than adding me, will save around 20-30 a month.

Good luck! Once past the initial equipment cost (my 8G 3G was $199 to add on a current plan), its not any different than any other. The best part for me is the internet access all the time. For work and personal uses, I am constantly checking emails and using the web, and its perfect for me!

The deal with iPhones is that they are GSM and Verizon uses CDMA. So iPhones are incapable of working on Verizon's network at all. The only other carrier that you can use in the US with a unlocked iPhone is T-Mobile because they use the same radio frequency.

That's just what they want you to think.

Verizon has a duplicate GSM code substitute, that supercedes T-Mobile's frequency.

This enables you to over-ride the CDMA. Enter "TTTNHFG5466328#" into any iPhone, and it will work on a Verizon network.

Seriously? I have an iPhone on AT&T anyway so it doesn't really matter to me. The Verizon EV-DO network doesn't work with the iPhone 3G anyway. So even if I could make phone calls on Verizon's network I wouldn't be able to use any of the other functions other than the iPod part of the iPhone. I use the internet on my phone all the time. Much more than I use any other function.

Do you have an iphone working on CDMA? Apple never put the technology in an iphone to speak CDMA. GSM uses TDMA, that is all the iphone can speak. Think of it like spanish vs english. The iphone doesn't have the capability to learn english (CDMA), it can only speak spanish (GSM). It would take new hardware for it to be able to speak english, not a code you enter into it.

TDMA(GSM) and CDMA phones operate on the same frequency in the states, you don't change frequency no matter what carrier you use, they all use 850 or 1900 in the states. Verizon has phones that operate with GSM as world phones, but those operate on frequencies that europe uses, 900 and 1800, they are completely useless for GSM here. They don't have secret GSM. Verizon supposedly will be going GSM with LTE 4G in the near future though, but that hasn't happened yet. Whoever is telling you iphone works with Verizon is full of shit.
