If you were in the market for a new steering damper which would it be?

Scotts, Ohlins, or GPR V4??

Scotts and only Scotts.

Scotts and only Scotts.

Thats what everyone says on the other board as well. Just much more adjustable then the others. I still just like the Ohlins for if nothing else the name  :squid:

I could have sworn I read somewhere the Ohlins and Scott's ones were the exact same thing... just diffrent badging... :idk:

Scotts is valved by Ohlins i believe.

Can't be the exact same thing tho, their two completely dif types.

I thought they both made a rotary type:idk: I know Ohlins makes the piston type... but thought they made both.

I'd go with the rotary... Scotts if Ohlins doesn't make one.

Scotts has Ohlins parts. Ohlins doesn't make the one that mounts on your tripple tree, Scotts does. And Scotts is WAY cheaper than Ohlins.

How you figure? Both to me look in the $400 range.

Mr Lefty

I'd go with the rotary... that 400 is less likely to get damaged if you go down.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be the Scotts. Sucks it only comes in an ugly ass gold though.

but gold is  when it comes to motorcycle suspension and shit... never once thought Ohlins shit was ugly

Well that's just because when you see that gold shock you KNOW the kind of performance and $$ tag it brings to the track. Ohlins suspension could be in pink and still be beautiful.

On a white/black theme bike. This gold bitch is gonna stick out like a motherfucker. Oh well fuck it Scott's ftw.

I dunno about pink... but I still think the steering dampner falls into that catagory though...

:idk: wonder how hard it'd be to re-assemble...

I'm assuming you'd have to break it down to powdercoat it...

I would say no...

Gas is about as hands on as it comes... so I'd go with his verdict.

its anodized when you get it, and some one had to put it together, so therefore it can be taken apart. powder coat is too thick, but i bet it could be anodized. do-able yes, worth the time and money? highly doubt it.

depending on what the inside looks like, if you were a real badass you could take it apart, copy and then cnc your own top piece, put your name or logo on it instead of scotts, and have it anodized.

or you could just get a gpr that will match...

**ducking** what about GPR? You will note that they come in a buttload of colors AND that they are radial, like the Scott's... just a thought...

you can always just tape off what you don't want powdercoated...

Anyone try/have the Pitbull version ? I don't know if it's more like the Scott's or the GPR since it is rotory as well.

From the knowledgable folks I have talked to:

Rotary are less prone to damage.

Linear perform better.

Solution: linear damper with a race mount kit. That's what I'll be doing with an Ohlins.

i understand rotarys come from the dirt world and linear comes from superbike racing and that each design is optimised for those intended purposes. that said, ive been looking across the pond at sprint

Yeah the rotarys were originally designed for dirt bikes since they crash better and there are less moving parts/seals exposed to the environment.

The sprints are nice and relatively inexpensive. Dave, for the best price on sprint dampers go to globalmoto.net.

This is the kind of setup I'm going to have for my ohlins... as you can see the ignition/key barrel needs to be removed. However the damper is clearly nice and protected. Best of both worlds:
