My car was idling like crap the other day so I figured since I just got it, it may have been awhile since anyone changed the oil out. I decided to go ahead and change the oil. I used Mobile 1 synthentic oil like I was reccomended on here. Anyways, I drain out the oil and noticed it was extremely dark and even after 10 minutes of draining, it was still coming out. I decided to go ahead and flush it to make sure all the bad stuff got out. I hooked up the hose, ran water through the engine, started it up and was waiting for the water to come out clean (The engine never went above idle so I was told this would be ok). Anyways, About 3 minutes into this, then engine starts shaking and shuts off. I figured it was all cleaned out so I plugged it up, added the oil and figured I was ready to go. WRONG! The car won't freaking start now. This car has been nothing but trouble for me, I think I am done with it.

I just read that entire thread...

I feel sorry for the kid... he bought the car... tried to do a bit of maintenance... and apparently didn't pick up on someone's sarcasam in another thread when they told someone to flush all the old oil out with water while it idled... :panic:

fuck man... that's just sad.

EPIC FAIL to the highest power. what a RETARD! water not go in crankcase so well, motor dislike that taste. particularly when running.... I wanna see the mechanic's face and hear his words when that car comes in and the diagnosis is made.... WHAT THE FUCK? you put WATER in the crankcase? as he's walkin over to the toolbox for a big wrench to hit the tard with.

Danger of getting advice from the wrong source. I feel a bit sorry for them, if just because a VERY good friend of mine was told to squeegee out her motor when doing an oil change by draining the oil and then firing it up with the plug out. I nabbed her before she could and explained the downside and no upside.

It happens more often than people think....

Some people just shouldn't ever handle their own maintenance. Ever.

That can be a factor...also who is telling you to get the "muffler bearings"? When I first joined the Army,I was extra stupid! My Dad died when I was young and I had some hit or miss mechanical aptitude (I could disassemble and reassemble complex systems rather well) but I had almost ZERO actual KNOWLEDGE of mechanics, tools, terminology, etc. The Drill Sargents would send me after ALL KINDS OF SHIT! For some reason,I was their pet. I don't know but they ran me ragged!

"Denard! Go to supply and get me a gross of grid squares.."

"Denard! Go to the motor pool and ask the supply Sargent for a liter of blinker fluid..."

"Denard! Go change the air in all of the jeeps' tires..."

I knew the basics, my dad taught me how to change my car's oil, change a tire, etc.

Leon taught me how to rip apart a bike and rebuild it. He makes me do my own maint. on my bike. If its something i am not familiar with, he shows me how to do it.

Yeah, when I got to my first base in the Air Force, I was told to go get 5 yards of flight line cause they needed to tie something down. I told them, "nice try." They didn't fuck with me too much. I'm not saying I'm not gullible, cause I can be in many situations, but that one was WAY too obvious.

what about having the new airmen call base weather and ask for a Major Storm?

I can totally 100% believe it...

Back in HS I worked at a pizza place... and there was a delivery driver (oddly enough named Marco) who was a tad bit on the queer side. This guy definatly was not mechanically inclined. So one day he came back from a delivery and was saying that his car was smoking bad and smelled funny. So the other drivers checked it out... and then asked him when the last time he changed the oil was? He replyed by saying that he hadn't done it since he bought the car... which I believe had been about 7 months of hard delivery driving. Everybody laughed and said dude change your oil!!! He replied "Oh, you need to do that???" So not knowing a thing about cars... and being too stupid to take it to a shop, he went out and bought some motor oil....... and preceeded to insert the oil....... into the radiator. The car didnt make it very far before the engine overheated, and blew....

That always used to be a tradition in auto parts stores and shops, too... Don't forget "hubcap gaskets" for the old-school

Many years ago, when she'd just gotten her license, my wife noticed her car was leaving red spots on the ground, but since she couldn't afford to take it to a shop, she just kept driving... So, one day, naturally, the car wouldn't move. A helpful guy came over and asked her what was wrong, and after a couple of minutes, asked her if she'd checked the transmission fluid lately.

What's transmission fluid? :idk:

It's not like they teach you these things in school, and her father was absolutely no help...

However, the big difference was that she wouldn't just go and do service on her car without reading the manual to learn the *proper* way...

We had a kid with almost no mechanical knowledge show up on the flightline. To make things worse, he was child-like in his trust and gullibility. Whoever sent him to us should be brought up on charges. We got him on a WXR calibration three times one month. Picture a bunch of guys sitting up in an airplane laughing their balls off, while thi 19 year old kid is holding two heavy lengths of metal at arms length over his head and waving them around in different patterns we made up and told him through the headset, all while standing on an open concrete pad in the middle of a howling blizzard. Seriously, it was around 40 below and the snow was like buckshot. Poor guy, I still don't feel bad but it had to suck.

We also sent him over to the cop squadron for some K9P cleaning solution. Sound it out folks...

at the station, every time i get a newbie, i usually make him go into the MCI truck and look for the fog lifters or the osteoadhesive pads (bone bandaids)

A while back I sent some guy to supply to get a box of grid squares. After a few hours he came back with a small box and a map cut into each individual grid square.

A few weeks later we sent the guy out to get keys to the impact area. He came back with the keys to a fence on a road that blocks entrance to part of the impact area.

After that we sent him to get flight line. He found some in walmart (it's for a kite).

Dude was a little too smart for his own good.

We always send the new maintainers to the bridge of the ship to grease the relative bearing. And they've seen it enough times up there that they play a long.

We had a new guy onboard, so we sent him up there to do it. He gets up there and they start messing with him.. One of the guys says, " That's not the right kind of grease.." He replies with, "Yeah right. I've done this before.. I know what kind of grease to use." They laughed him right off of the bridge. He was later kicked out on drug charges.
