Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I figured I would bring it on over. :twfix:

So I thought I would share what I've been spending around 1 day a week average working on since the summer: Building my own garage/workshop. I'll be adding to this thread as I make more progress.

My folks' office building has some parts of the basement that are separate due to the building having had a couple additions over its lifetime. One portion is about 15x18, and consists of a dirt floor, and very old plaster covering the walls and ceiling (the type of plaster with a mesh screen nailed up and the plaster attached to the screen). It's been full of a bunch of useless crap we have to shove in there about 7-8 years ago in a hurry (long story) and haven't done anything with since. Also, through a small wall there is another small portion separated from the main basement that is about 5x15 which also has a dirt floor and had crap in it as well.

Upon starting the project I decided it would be well worth it to break down the wall and connect the two sections into one workshop... the smaller room will end up with lots of shelving mounted to the walls. Due to the age of it all, I decided to frame new walls inside the room in most places, in order to be able to insulate easily, hang drywall, and mount light fixtures, outlets, etc. There are some walls in the smaller room up which I will just mount insulation and sheetrock directly, though.

Just getting all the stuff out and making all the dump runs, as well as ripping out all of the old plaster and insulation took me the first few months (only one day a week, roughly).

So, here is what I started with:

Main room full of crap:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/01%20Start/DSC01507Medium.jpg

Here is part of the smaller room:

After I knocked down the wall between the two and cleared out the main room, here is a view looking from the main room into the smaller room:

So, essentially, here is a schematic of the space I will be working with:

Here is the whole place stripped out, dirt floor, ready for concrete:

The concrete needed not only to be laid inside the building in the two rooms, but there are severe drainage issues right outside the building, so there is now also a concrete 'apron' that runs around the whole back of the building and up the side a little bit. This makes sure all the rain goes away from the building. I don't have pics of the outside right now, I'll add some later. Also, all of the walls that border the outside world, I sprayed using a paint sprayer with a heavy duty sealing primer called 'Kilz'... seals in moisture, etc. Also, I caulked any cracks or holes both on the inside and outside.
Here's some shots with the floor in, walls sealed,(I've also insulated the walls in the small room that I won't be building another wall inside of) ready to start getting some real work done:

I framed walls on most of the remaining walls. There are a couple where I will use the existing frame. To attach the bottom 2x4 to the floors, I used one of those powder-actuated nailers that use little bullets and you hit them with a hammer. I've used them before, they work great, made by Remington. After that it's just standard pain in the ass wall framing.

Then, I ran all of my wires. Due to anticipated high amperage, I used 4 gauge wire (for this particular wire I used aluminum because copper is so damn expensive right now) and ran a line from the takeoff lugs on the building's main panel back to my garage, and mounted a subpanel. I also used an existing wire to connect a fan-forced heater and mounted it in the framing... nice and toasty in there now. I ran all the wires for three big fluorescent light fixtures with a 3 way switch in two places, 4 small spotlights (for above where I plan to build a workbench and where I plan to have my big roller tool chests) controlled by a switch near where the workbench will be, 9 normal outlets, and 1 line for a 220V wire for when I get a compressor, hopefully not too far in the future. This is all managed by a 15 amp breaker for all the lights, three 20 amp breakers for all the outlets, and a 40 amp breaker for the 220V line.

Here is some pictures with most of the walls done being framed and most of the wiring done.

Today I got some bulbs and turned on the breaker for the fluorescent lights so I can stop working with those damn spot/work lights. I finished a couple other little wiring things and insulated the two walls that are up that border the outside. Here's some pics with the lights on.

I plan to run a couple speaker wire outlets and the accompanying wires on the back wall because I plan to bring in my stereo and speakers on shelves there. After a couple more little wiring and insulation things, it will be time to start the drywall for all the walls and the ceiling. Really starting to come together.

A little update.

The bike is in there now on a tender, because of the snow. Fits in nicely, I will have PLENTY of space to work on it. Only problem is I noticed there was some oil on the ground underneath the bike, and it didn't look like it was coming from the breather tubes. I didn't have time to look into it, so now it's bugging me quite a bit, I'm worried.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/06%20insulation%20done/DSC02148Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/06%20insulation%20done/DSC02143Medium.jpg

All of the insulation is done. I've JUST started drywalling. Lots of work left to do there.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/06%20insulation%20done/DSC02147Medium.jpg

Because the little spot lights I am putting above my workbench and tool chest are a little too long to fit in the rafters, I had to box them in. I built little boxes and hung two of them, I still have to hang the other two.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/06%20insulation%20done/DSC02146Medium.jpg

Here's a random shot of the little side room.

Left to do:
- Hang boxes and run wires for speakers (have parts already)
- Hang other two small light boxes
- Modify the subpanel (add a 60amp main breaker and ground bus bar... have the parts)
- Build and hang doors
- Finish putting up plastic sheeting
- Drywall hanging, mudding, sanding
- Paint
- Install all outlets, switches, and faceplates (after paint, obviously)
- Put down epoxy floor coating (medium gray with black, red, and white paint chips)
- Crack a beer and admire the work

Did a couple little things the other day.

I mounted up boxes and ran wires for all of the speaker outlets.

Also, I modified the subpanel a bit to follow convention... the neutral and ground wires needed to be on separate bus bars, and the hot lines coming in needed to run through a main breaker before going to the individual breakers.

Gettin shit done, son.

Updated... new ground bus bar, new main breaker.

After xmas I'm planning to make a ton of progress, mainly on the drywall and the construction of the doors.

So in the past few days I've made some pretty decent drywall progress. The ceiling in both rooms is completely done, including boxing in the little spotlights. I started the walls, I've done the whole back wall in the main room, and half of the wall that interfaces the two rooms. Did a couple wiring things, added a dedicated outlet under the workbench for the minifridge, other odds and ends. There are a couple portions of wall that cannot be drywalled until later, because I have to design and build the garage doors, and design and build a door to replace the small door in the small room that goes to the outside.

Here's some shots of the progress:

Back wall, ceiling (notice that my 'work table' looks like I had a huge coke party  ... gotta love drywall):

Comin' along decently now that I've been able to put in a couple consecutive full days :)

Did a couple more things today....

Finished almost all of the drywall that can be done before the main doors and the small side door are all sorted out. There is a small portion in the smaller room that can still be done, probably about an hour of work.

It's all a mental thing, but once you get those sheet up on the ceiling and wall, you really feel like you've actually done something.

So, after some pretty hectic times at work, I was finally able to get some more work done on the garage in the weekend right after my birthday.

The main thing hanging over my head at this point is building the garage doors, as well as the door in the small room needing to be ripped out and a new one built. Like I said before, some companies will charge anywhere between 5 and 20 grand for a set of 'carriage house' doors.... which is ludicrous. I'll just build them myself.

So, all of the drywall being done save for three small strips around the small door and large doors, I decided to tackle the big project. It took almost an entire day just to measure, come up with a plan, verify structural integrity, buy the materials, and be ready to get started. Swinging doors are much more difficult than traditional garage doors due to their tendency to sag over time if not built properly.

The key here is to keep weight down while still making them nice and strong, make them able to be very well insulated, resistant to weather, decent looking, etc.
Here is the general shape I came up with. This is the left door, the right would be a mirror image of this.
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/10%20door%20framed%20last%20wall/doorshape.jpg

The main beam for the hinging is a 4x4, the rest of the boards are 2x4's. I'll use 5/16" lag bolts for all of the fasteners (four on the top and bottom of the 4x4, 2 on all the 2x4 joints. Also, the cross beam going from near top to far bottom should alleviate some load from the door wanting to sag. When I find a decent set of hinges, I will use lag bolts to attach each side of the hinge into the 4x4's (the static post the doors hang on is also a 4x4). The outside of the doors will be clad with Texture 1-11 with the more narrow grooves... looks decent, treated for weather, paints well, lightweight. The doors inside will be filled with some foam insulation. The inside of the doors will be clad with some very thin wood sheeting and painted. The bottom of the doors will have rubber 'wiper'-type weatherstrips, the center seal will be similar. The top and sides will have rubber stripping tacked into the door fram so that as the doors are closed they will seal up. The center will use on of those vertical rod locks that will go down into a hole drilled in the concrete.

It took all of another day to frame the doors in and get everything all squared and solid. It was worth it. You could hang a flucking car on these support posts. They are pressure treated 4x4's that are secured to the structure of the building with 1/2" lag bolts that are 10" long. They are perfectly square and level. Also, the last piece of wall had not yet been built because I hadn't decided how the door framing was going to do, so I built that... powder-actuated nail cannon to put the base PT 2x4 into the ground, framed the rest, insulated it, mounted the lightswitch. Here is a view from outside, followed by a few closeups:
(note, this first pic was taken with my new phone, then I emailed it via text message to myself... pretty decent)

One thing you can't see in any of the pictures but that I did do, and was fairly time consuming, was that I installed all of the outlets into the outlet boxes. There are 10 of them... but now I turned all the breakers on so I don't have to run extension cords anymore. Wired up the switch for the spotlights too.

Lastly, I wired up the little spotlights for over the workbench and over the tool chests. These things were a little bitch... cramming all the wires and wire nuts into the junction boxes and then getting them up and into the holes I cut in the drywall and up into the little boxes I framed in. Big pain. It's not readily apparent in these photos, but these little lights are going to provide some great worklight in those two areas.

Now work sucks again, which is why I haven't been on here recently, but hopefully I'll be able to get out there and get some more work done soon.

Finally, after a really chitty week at work, spending until 11pm there thursday, friday, and saturday... I was able to take the day off on sunday and get some work done on the garage.

I built the structure/frame for both of the swinging doors. They are REALLY sturdy. So far, I'm definitely happy with my decision to build these myself. The 4x4's on each door will be closest to the hinges, the 2x4's in the center.

The 2x4's on the top and bottom are connected to the vertical boards via 5/16"x3" lag bolts with washers, countersunk. There are 4 going into the top and bottom of the 4x4, 2 going into the top and bottom of the 2x4, and then 2 going into the top and bottom of the 2x4 cross-support board.

Built the first one:

Looking pretty good:

I have a plan for the cladding front and back, adhesive, insulation, hinges, weather stripping, ground wipers and center flap, as well as the locking/closing mechanism, and an idea for center casters for support to prevent sag. I think this will all take one more full day of work. Then, I will just need to paint them and hang them up!

Really coming together now :D

Did some more work on the doors this past weekend, unfortunately only one day's worth, and was able to completely finish their construction. They are pretty heavy, but as long as I use proper hinges, the added strength, durability, insulating quality, and weather resistance should be worth it.

A lot of the machine supply places I've been looking at for hinges are ridiculously overpriced. Luckily, I have a buddy who does tons of custom metalwork and makes his own ornate railings and gates, and he has even fashioned a pair of hinges for 40 foot tall solid wood doors. I am gonna take a trip to his shop and we'll make some nice hinges for not too much money.

So the doors are built around the frames I described in my last post. For the front cladding, I used texture 1-11 with roughly 4" wide grooves. It's attached via lots of construction adhesive (liquid nails, good stuff) and some 1.25" exterior screws. The construction adhesive I used all around will actually add a ton of strength to the doors, as well as sealing them from water and weather. Then, I used some 2" thick foam insulation (R12 insulating factor... nice, and a little pricey) to fill the door. I used construction adhesive to attach it to the back of the front T-1-11, so behind it will be a roughly 1.5" air gap, which will help even more for insulating. Then, the inside cladding is just 1/4" finished luon, attached via construction adhesive and 1.25" finish nails.

Here is the doors as built this weekend.

Mid-Build:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/12%20doors%20built/0216081757.jpg

All done:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/12%20doors%20built/0216081938.jpg

You can see the T-1-11 Pretty well on the underside of this door from the side. I guess I forgot to take photos of the outsides of the doors.

I have all the rest of planned out exactly, except for the hinges.

One door will lock to the other upon closing via a gate latch, like this:

Then, the doors will lock in place via a cane bolt / plunge latch down into the concrete. I have the bit, and a hammer drill. Easy. It is sort of like this:
http://www.hardwaresource.com/uploads/926016,018-lg.jpg

There will be wipers along the bottom of each door to seal against the ground, and a wider one mounted in the center to cover the gap between the doors.

Rubber weatherstripping will be tacked all around the door frame on the building in such a way that as the door is pulled shut the last couple inches, all the weatherstripping will be lightly compressed, and seal the garage.

I plan to find rigid casters with a slight offset from their mounting plate that will be attached such that as the door is pulled shut the last couple inches, a lot of the load will be taken off the hinges and supported by the casters.

Now, just have to paint them (using black exterior paint on the front and sides... the inside will be white interior paint) and hang them. I'm going out there tomorrow to paint the doors at the very least.

So last Saturday I was able to paint the doors. I used a Behr exterior paint with primer built in and it went down very nicely, just took a little effort.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/13%20Doors%20painted/DSC02369Medium.jpg

Before painted, I lightly sanded down the front face of the texture 1 - 11 to get it nice and smooth with a belt sander. It's pretty rough when you buy it. This would look better, and make the paint go on easier...

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/13%20Doors%20painted/DSC02348Medium.jpg

I used some putty on all of the screw holes and little imperfections. Here they are, all prepped for paint:

This weekend I'm planning to head out there and paint the inside face of both doors. I have some hinges coming next week so the doors are on hold until then. I am going to try to start figuring out the small door in the other room and if I think of a good idea that is doable same day I will get started on it. Otherwise I will get going on the drywall mudding.... ugh...

Work sucks, otherwise this shit would have been done months and months ago.

Finished painting the other sides of the doors.

Did a couple errands and figured out a thorough plan for the small door. Just have to enact it now.

This coming weekend I should be able to hang the big doors, as well as construct, paint, and hang the small door. That would be HUGE.... and I think it's doable.

Yes sir, quite a bit :D

Got a lot accomplished yesterday and today. Also, I'll be able to work on it tomorrow (monday), friday, and next weekend. Hell yeah.

I got all the materials necessary for the small door: solid wood slab exterior door, exterior door jambs, lock set, hinges, and a kit with jigs to help you cut all your doorknob holes. I painted the door and jambs and let them to sit:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02420Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02422Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02424Medium.jpg

I ripped out the old shitty door, and installed the new jambs.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02439Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02440Medium.jpg

Later sunday night I got the hinges on the small door, mounted it, and got the knob and lock all working great. It was dark so I didn't take more pics. The door still needs another coat of paint and I need to insulate around the frame with caulking and some other odds and ends. I'll get pics tomorrow.

Also, I found some hinges that would work for the large doors at a killer price. They are commercial grade 4.5" hinges with non-removable pins, ball bearing movement, nice thick metal for the plates, very beefy pin, and they were pre-primed for painting. Best of all, only 6 bucks a piece. It was a no-brainer. I got 6... maybe I only need four, but figured at that price I might as well overkill.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02436Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02435Medium.jpg

I attached the hinges via 5/16" lag screws for 6 of the 8 holes, and then 1 on each side is a through bolt to the other side. This was if someone wants to break it they can't just take out the bolts on the hinges. I mounted up the doors... shimmed them up into place and got two hinges attached with half the bolts on each... just to test the movement. Movement was smooth and felt great.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02437Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02442Medium.jpg

My plan tomorrow is to tidy up all my loose ends. Hopefully this can all be done in a day, but I'm not sure.

- Quick trip to the Depot for more paint and some bolts

- Finish all the small door odds and ends
---- Painting
---- Caulking/insulating
---- Weatherstrip on the bottom
---- Etc.

- Finish the big doors
---- Mount the other two hinges
---- Attach all lags/bolts
---- Attach the gate latch to connect the two doors
---- Rig up the cane bolt for the floor
---- Weatherstrip the entire opening
---- Attach weatherstrips/wipers for the bottom of the doors
---- Rubber strips over the gaps on the hinge sides
---- Paint hinges, frame, general trim around the doors

- Final drywall work
---- Small pieces by all the doors (big doors, small door, door to main basement)

- Clean the shit out of the place
---- Get rid of all random wood
---- Sweep floor
---- Organize all tools
---- Can now get rid of table, etc.

It's already starting to look less cluttered in there just from my moving the table out of the way:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/15%20Doors%20up/DSC02444Medium.jpg

At that point, I will be ready to tackle starting the mudding, sanding, and painting next friday, saturday, and sunday.

Oh yeah, and I'm going for a god damn ride. The bike needs it, and I need it. It's suppose to be around 38. Good enough.

I feel like this is not the best deal.
I've got that same Black and Decker door lock installer. Works really nice.
Yeah, considering it's just a plastic jig, I was pleased with how well it worked.

So I didn't get quite as much done today as I originally planned/wanted, but that's alright. I woke up late (needed the rest), had to ship some things, wanted to ride, and needed to organize the place quite a bit.

I finished drilling all the holes and installing all the bolts for the big doors. They open smoothly, and work great. They are all ready to be sealed up and all latches and such installed, all of which I have a plan for and have all the parts. I'll do that next time.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02447Medium.jpg

Also, I realized I never posted pics of the outside concrete work. To fix all of the potential drainage problems due to the asphalt sloping toward the building, everything was re-done with concrete. This is also the reason for the low ceiling height, the floor in the garage needed to be at the asphalt level plus a little bit. You can see here all of the concrete built up against the building to encourage runoff. So far from what I've seen it all works great.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02450Medium.jpg

Then, I decided no matter what, I needed to ride. Went out for about two hours, hit some twisties, got the feel back, etc. It felt fucking great. About to head out:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02449Medium.jpg

When I returned, instead of worrying about little trim work, painting and insulating the door frames, etc (all which would require a Depot trip), I decided to clean up and get organized. Also, this is due to the trash guy coming tomorrow... needed to get rid of some scrap. There was a TON of old and scrap wood. I cut it all into pieces to fit into barrels (the only way they'll take it). It filled up six trash barrels!

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02453Medium.jpg

Also, cleaned up garage. Some of the clutter were the makeshift 'tables' I had been using for work, which ended up in the pics above. Also, organized all the tools and swept up. That's a shitload of sawdust!

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02457Medium.jpg

Lots of space in there now that a lot of the shit is out. It's going to be so sweet when I'm done. Bike looks great in there, too ;) The tire tracks are from me test-fitting our jeep in there... if we needed it to fit, it does, barely. Wouldn't be worth it for everyday storage though.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02466Medium.jpg

Gotta love the 'reverse chicken strips' due to the shitty weather... most of the tire all smoothed out from normal use, the edges ripped up from track use (tire temperature as well as harder accel at lean causes the shredding...)
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/16%20Cleaned%20up%20doors%20bolted/DSC02467Medium.jpg

Basically, everything is ready to go. Next time I go out, I will finish all the door insulation, weatherstripping, caulking, and painting. Then, I'll hang the last few small bits of drywall by the doors, and pull the bike and everything except for drywall stuff out of the garage. That should all take one day. Then, the next day the mudding and sanding will start. After that, it will just be painting, building shelves, and building a workbench. I've also got a few little finishing touches/surprises up my sleeve ;)

well if I do the trail bed they'll be gone... but otherwise they'll stay... they'll have a million more dents though... nice thing about rust... you don't care about body damage anymore

so did you already wire you garage for sound? I remember you saying you were gonna do that... but didn't see where you were gonna mount the speakers and shit

 I really want one of those trucks... I'd try to nab the hilux turbo'd version, with stickshift. Awesome.

Yeah, I prewired some boxes with speaker hookups. The back wall, opposite the big doors, is going to have the sound system. The speaker outlets are in the upper corners, I'm going to put shelves there for the speakers, sort of nestling them up in the corners of the room. Then, on the left side there will be an extra shelf under the speaker shelf to hold tuner, cd player, equalizer, etc. I have a power outlet there too. In the middle of the wall, I may have some sort of pimp decoration planned

I'm not the best, but I can do a decent job on most general construction, drywall, electrical, etc etc. I can help you out if you need it. Once you make a space your own you'll love spending time in it. Once you get a place and want to figure out a plan for it I can talk to you on the phone and stuff.

The thing I'm the worst at is probably drywalling, and the mudding and taping and sanding of it. Partially just because I don't really like doing it. The other stuff I truly enjoy, it's fun to me. But yeah, I'm not looking forward to that. Should be starting it tomorrow. Today I had to hang some more end beads, metal corner strips, some more small pieces of drywall, etc... and I was working on the big doors and small door... painting trim, etc.

edit: and as far as the budget, it's really not too bad. Materials aren't necessarily cheap, but they're reasonable. The hard part is the time and effort. At the end, if you look at what you spent on materials, compared to what some :asshat: would have charged you to do it for you, you'll have saved a fortune. I've got like under 2 grand into this place, not counting the concrete.... some contractor would probably charge like 20k to do this shit up all nice.

CEO...you're inspiring me a little bit with that talk. I gotta put a fence around the yard. My wife wants me to do it and I would rather just pay someone.
Fence building is hard work, but not very easy to screw up... digging the post holes and everything can be tough depending on the ground at your house. But it would be a good project. Give it a shot... it will end up about as good as you would have someone do for you, and cost about 1/4 of the money.

Then have the wife help you paint it. Afterwards, you'll be like "wow I built that... awesome." Then cut a deal with the lady... the money you saved, put half of it into your joint savings account, and the other half to spend on something fun/relaxing/etc.

As usual, didn't make quite as much progress this weekend as I would have liked, but maybe I just set lofty goals. I got a decent amount done, though. The weather (rain and snow) prevented me from doing some of the things I intended.

My camera was acting up so these are all phone pics, sorry.

There was bits of drywall to finish around the small door, big doors, and the door into the main basement. The frames also needed to be stuffed with insulation beforehand. I did that. Also, needed to prep a lot of the corners for mudding with j-strips and metal corner beads. At this point I was piecing a lot of the parts together with leftover drywall bits. It will add some mudding time but I didn't feel like making a Depot trip just for a sheet of drywall.

Here is the part by the big doors:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081122.jpg

Hung some corner beads:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081123.jpg

From the main basement looking at the small door after I stuffed insulation in the frame:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081124.jpg

I also ripped down the door into the main basement becasue it was in rough shape and needed new hinges. There was a big steel sheet bolted to the front of it (previous building owner kept ~$100k stock of high-end fishing supplies in here, used to be a flyfishing shop) that weighed probably 80 pounds, I took that off. That is why the hinges had gone to shit. I cleaned it off and puttied all of the holes in it:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081124a.jpg

Hung the drywall around the small door, j-stripped the edges:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081326.jpg

Used some of the 1/4" luon that I used to face the inside of the big doors to clean up the threshold:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081903b.jpg

Then, I used thick weatherstripping to insulate the whole frame of the big doors. The last inch or so that the doors are closed compress this stuff and make a weathertight seal. I could already feel the place getting warmer:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081904.jpg

Then, used a gate latch to click the doors together, a short barricade (will paint black and rubberize the ends so as not to scratch the doors next time) for strength, and a cane bolt down into the concrete to secure them shut:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081902.jpg

Started the mudding, did most of the main room 1 coat:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081903a.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081903.jpg

And painted one side of the door going into the main basement:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/17%20More%20doors%20mud%20start/0315081935.jpg

Next time, need to finish up all the door issues... couldn't this time because of the weather. I have all the stuff already:
- Door sweeps on the bottom of the small door and both big doors
- Extra wide door sweep/flap between the big doors in the center
- Rubber sheeting over the hinge-side gaps for redundancy
- Small trim painting bits outside
- Paint the other side of the door going into the main basement, rehang it on fresh hinges

There is one or two small trim things to neaten up in the garage as well, just little tit jobs though.

Then, it's all mudding... 3 coats, sanding in between. Yay fun. Not.

Cheap ass HD fuckers.

This past weekend (Easter weekend) I was able to get out there for all day Saturday and the morning of Sunday to get some work done. I finished everything involving all three doorways, did a couple bits of trim work, and did a little more mudding.

I gave another coat of paint to the door that goes into the main basement and painted the whole frame that it hangs on. I chiseled out bigger hinge cutouts on the frame and the door and hung it up. Looks 1000x better now:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02503Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02510Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02547Medium.jpg

I repainted some of the trim on the small door, and attached a doorsweep to the bottom. Cashmoney:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02505Medium.jpg

I boxed in the corner near the door because it was still exposed and drywalled it:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02511Medium.jpg

For the main doors I used some rubber weatherstripping to cover the gap near the hinges. I nailed some on the inside (forgot to take pics) wrapped around the corner so that as the door is closed, the strip gets compressed between the door and the frame. Then, for redundancy, I tacked a sheet over the gap on the outside as well. I think I'll probably dab all the nailheads with black paint just to improve the appearance next time I'm out there.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02506Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02542Medium.jpg

I put door sweeps on the bottom of both doors. They didn't come long enough so I had to buy three and chop one up:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02507Medium.jpg

Now comes the only real mistake I've made in this whole build (besides a couple small electrical brainfarts which I fixed). When building the doors, as I was putting on the sheeting on both sides, I used tons of construction adhesive as well as nails/screws for the back/front. After this, I stacked the doors on top of eachother and left them on my work table. But, I forgot to put some weight on top of the top door, so as the adhesive dried and hardened, the sheet moved/warped. This manifested itself when I hung the doors as the doors appearing to not be square, which is not the case.

In order to seal the gap in the middle of the doors, I decided to get extra large door sweeps which had a wider piece of rubber sheet than most, and just mount them vertically. But, due to the screwup I just mentioned, the doors don't line up perfectly and the flap wouldn't seal all the way. So I traced the error onto a board and used a belt sander to create my own 'shim'. Worked great:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02538Medium.jpg

Then I painted those trim bits and you don't notice them at all:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02539Medium.jpg

I decided to paint the sweeps in the middle because I thought they looked funny. The paint didn't go on too well so they will need a couple more coats, this was on sunday right before I had to leave to do Easter stuff so I didn't do a great job. I'll fix it next time:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/18%20All%20doors%20done/DSC02543Medium.jpg

I painted the crossbar and tacked some rubber to it so it doesn't scratch the door when putting it in:

I did a little more mudding in the corner and on the ceiling:

From the outside, the place looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. Especially considering the doors I built cost about 3% of what I was quoted to have a set built.

Unfortunately I've got a shitty couple of weeks with work, this one and next week, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to get much/anything done for a bit :(

But I'm going to put Katherine to work when she comes to visit :D

Left:
- One small bit of trim work
- Mudding, sanding
- Clean the whole joint out, throw away scraps, etc to get ready for paint. Lay down plastic sheeting over the whole floor
- Priming, painting
- I want to use a baseboard that I can seal to the floor to make it waterproof. Since the place isn't that big I think I might splurge on these because they'll look fuckin' badass. Then I'll use clear caulking to seal the joint at the floor. Will make mopping the place really easy.
http://www.diamondlifegear.com/+Product-Photos/BaseMold5.jpg
- Design and build workbench. Put a beer fridge under it.
- Build all shelving. The small room will be all shelves, and there will be shelves for the stereo.
- Set up tool chests, fill, organize, etc. In general organize the whole joint.
- Down the road, I want to do the epoxy flooring. We'll see when I get the money and time to do it.

I'm also going to tackle a job in the main basement as well, but that is a story for another day ;)

Yeah, I don't want to do the rubber piece-together floor for a lot of reasons, as I said before.... but I am leaning towards the baseboards. I think I can swing em.

I was able to get one good day of work done in the garage this past weekend. I had Katherine up, and she wanted to see it and help a bit. She rocks :D Next weekend will be dedicated to garage work and starting my bike prep for the track in 3 weeks and for the season in general.

Basically applied the rest of the 1st mud coat after doing a bunch of moving and organizing of things, and then sanded half of that first coat. Three coats and three sands should do it, so it's coming along...

Here's a few camera phone pics, and a couple Kat took, being a paparazzi smartaleck:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/19%20Mid%20mud%20work/0404081624Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/19%20Mid%20mud%20work/CIMG0719Medium.jpg

At this point, I'll have sort of a double focus for the next few weeks until my track days: the garage, and doing some bike prep for the track is in order since I am a little anxious about all of that getting done (new tires, 4kmile service, new SS brake lines and HH pads, tank sliders, etc.)

I love cats. They are way more badass than dogs... Think about it... a 70lbs dog can be pretty ominous... but if you had a cat of the same stature, it would be insane. Cats are faster, more athletic, have more weapons at their disposal, and are way smarter...

She loves chasing leaves too. It's freakin hilarious.... But our town has a no-roam policy on animals they have to have tags and if they are outside they must be within a fence. Soooo. A fence is going to have to come up. Which we both talked about underground fences. I just want a "cat house" that they can be locked in when we aren't home..... I don't want them running around. Hell, they are 7 and 5. So they have maybe at most 10 years left. I think Cutty can just deal with it.... He has for almost 3 years now anyway....:idk:

Stop talking about cats in my garage thread, faggots. Cats suck.

Well as I said before, these couple weeks would see a shift in focus to getting the bike ready for the track and concurrently working on the garage (hopefully).

This past weekend it was real nice out so on saturday the first thing I did was go for a nice ride. Down the street from the office (where the garage is) is my folks' house, here's a pic of the lake. Awesome weather!

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/20%20Cleaned%20out%20bike%20work/0412081234Medium.jpg

Back from the ride:
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/20%20Cleaned%20out%20bike%20work/0412081459Medium.jpg

So then I spent the second part of saturday cleaning the garage. I organized all the tools and removed all the unnecessary ones and put them up in the 2nd floor apartment (next big project). The only things left are drywall related stuff, chop saw, vacuum, couple other tools. This took quite a while. Then I swept out the floor and it was ready for the garage's first REAL work to be done.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/20%20Cleaned%20out%20bike%20work/0412082011Medium.jpg

So I brought the bike in, and cracked a beer. I know the garage isn't done yet and I've got a lot left that I want to do, but it felt pretty fucking great to be using it for what it's meant for:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/20%20Cleaned%20out%20bike%20work/0412082034Medium.jpg

Took the wheels off:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/20%20Cleaned%20out%20bike%20work/0412082145Medium.jpg

Took em down to a buddy's who has a no-mar tire changer and got the new tires mounted:

Cleaned the shit out the whole drivetrain (sprockets, chain, wheels, cush). Before:

After.... BLING BLING!!! (this is for you, azoom!):

This coming weekend I'll be doing my 4,000 mile service, installing stainless steel brake lines and HH sintered pads, and hopefully doing some work on the mudding/sanding, but the bike takes precedence.

Looks good man. Really nice work.
Thanks dude. Appreciate it. I just want it to be DONE... but the bike has taken precedence, and other responsibilities keep popping up. I hope I can bang it out pretty soon and be really done.

This weekend was pretty much dedicated to riding the bike and then working on it. Friday night met up with a couple riders and did a couple hour jaunt up the north shore of MA. Good times.

Saturday was very nice out:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081112Medium.jpg

Rode for a couple hours and then decided to get to work. MAN did it feel cool to open up the garage doors and wrench on the bike in the nice weather while sipping a cold one:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081435Medium.jpg

One bad thing, though... the side panels by the gas tank are known for having a tab that can break easily... well mine broke and fell off somewhere without me knowing it. I ordered a new one from mrcycles and called stompgrip and they are sending me the small piece that goes on that part for free. No big deal, I'll just try to keep a better eye on it from now on. This side without:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081624Medium.jpg

What it's supposed to look like:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081625Medium.jpg

As an aside, my tool collection is starting to be pretty sweet. I got a dremel and some accessories and a dremel engraver to engrave my tools. Figured I'd snap a photo of the growing collection:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081413Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/20%20Cleaned%20out%20bike%20work/0412081955aMedium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081534Medium.jpg

First things first, time to do the 4k mile service. Lubed all pivot points, repacked the wheel bearings (did this when i got new tires last week already actually), readjusted the chain slack to the slacker side of the spec since I'll be at the track soon and using more of the suspension travel, adjusted my throttle cable free play and I like to keep it adjusted a bit on the tight side, also lubed the chain a bit. Did the oil change as well.

Then it was time to check the spark plugs. Lots of fun... you get to remove the gas tank, airbox, throttle bodies, the works... all to get to the plugs:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419082043Medium.jpg

When doing this I noticed the back of my intake valves were a little cruddy. I use good gas, so I'm not sure why this is happening but a slight overfill in oil could probably cause it. I am going to run some seafoam through the bike and that should clean it up.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419082015Medium.jpg

Anyone know if running seafoam will heavily affect performance? If so, I'll wait until after my TDs next week to run it through.

Then it was time to sync the throttle bodies. Propped up the tank:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081700Medium.jpg

Here's the throttle bodies. I've circled three of the adjusting screws and three of the plugs for hooking up the tuner:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081704Medium.jpg

Basically you pull the plugs, hook up the sync tool, and adjust the screws to try to level them out. It's a sort of give and take, turning the 1 screw affects cylinders 1 and 3, turning the 2 screw affects cylinders 2 and 4, etc. After a little bit of messing, here's what you want it to look like:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081750Medium.jpg

That was it for the 4k service. Lastly I wanted to throw on my Galfer SS lines (dark smoke... look great) front and rear, HH pads, and fresh fluid. Also got speedbleeders for all the calipers (helped a LOT, and they're stainless too). Here's the stuff:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/21%20More%20bike%20service/0419081457Medium.jpg

Then, my phone died because I left my charger in boston. Since my camera needs to be repaired, my phone is my camera right now, so I don't have any more pics. I'll snap some of the lines next time I get a chance. On the ride back to town, got the pads all scrubbed in... did a couple hard braking moves... HOLY SHIT do those things bite. Amazing difference from the stock lines/pads/fluid. Can't wait to get up to the track next week... been dreaming about it for six months.

I left this coming weekend as a buffer in case I had any trouble with bike work (my first time doing all this bike work for the most part). Pics look great, you have been very busy! Where did you get your wheel lock? I would love to have some kind of anti theft device for the times that I can keep my bike in a garage. That little lock seems like a good deal as it is small and would keep the average idiot from going anywhere.
That is really only PART of my locking system. It's a kryptonite New York disc lock.... I use it in combination with the kryptonite 'fahgettaboudit' motherfuckinghugeass chain when I am at my apartment, along with a Nelson Rigg cover. At work, I don't need all that, so I just throw the disk lock on there.

I got the lock and chain as a combo about a year ago from motorcycle superstore... they had a sale and had the best price on it that I could find anywhere.
damn ceo, you da man.

looking good. bike and garage.
Thanks very much dude! How ya been? Haven't seen you around much since the old forum...

Where the hell do you carry your locks while cruising around? I am looking to get a tank bag eventually, but I would imagine that Fagetaboutit to be quite fucking heavy.

I leave the huge chain and the cover at my apt. That chain is extremely heavy, I wouldn't take it with me. The disc lock is the only thing I take with me. I throw it in my jacket pocket, backpack, or tankbag, depending what I've got with me that day.

An option if you want to lock at your destination would be to get a lighter chain to use with the same disc lock and bring that.

Just looked around on motorcycle superstore to check out some of their products. I don't have to worry about theft too much around here. Surprisingly everyone is pretty well behaved on this campus so much that most people just leave doors unlocked and windows down during the day.

I am going to look into something like the disk lock for road trips that I take in the future. Right now if this summer in Alaska goes down, the bike will be sitting in a secured garage and then I won't know where I will be living. I assume I can get the big fucking chain if an apartment is where I end up.

Thanks for the help as usual. :rockwoot:

Really just grab a shop manual for your bike and figure it out. I've never done any of this shit before, I just try it and figure it out. I don't trust other people.

It's a pretty small lake, lots of sunfish and such, some small stripers, there are pickerel, and carp and stuff.

We caught a HUGE carp one time... it was about 2 feet in length IIRC. It snapped the fishing rod so my dad jammed a branch down its throat and pulled it out of the water that way.

So I was able to do a very little bit on the garage this past weekend before heading up to the track. I had a lot of errands and such to do to get ready to head up there.

I sanded the last coat of mud that was laid down... man that work sucks and is messy.

Ghost hands:

This weekend I'll be working solely on the garage and hope to have all the mudding and sanding done to be ready for paint. I also want to run a network cable down from the office and install an outlet for it by the workbench for internet access.

I was only able to put a large chunk of one day this weekend.

I finished sanding some mud and laid down a fresh coat over the whole garage. I think it is pretty much there in terms of coverage in smoothness. After a very light sanding, I think about 1/4-1/3 of the garage will need another very light coat of mud and then it will be done and ready to move on to paint. It doesn't look much different so I didn't take many pics obviously. You can see in these photos that there are some places where the mud is still a grayish color... i.e. it's still wet...:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/23%20More%20mud/0503081833aMedium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/23%20More%20mud/0503081835Medium.jpg

A couple other odds and ends:

Down the street someone was throwing out these adirondack chairs, and they were really in decent shape and were the right color, so I nabbed them. I figure after a long day of wrenching on the bike, I can grab a beer and watch the sunset over the lake in these bad boys. Not bad for $0....:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/23%20More%20mud/0503081404Medium.jpg

The new tank panel and piece of stompgrip came in... threw those on. Someone suggested drilling a little hole and securing these with a ziptie like they did on their bike... I will probably do that soon. Back to normal:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/23%20More%20mud/0503081831Medium.jpg

A friend's dad was using a set of utility shelves in a storage unit he was going to be emptying out and didn't need them anymore, so I grabbed them for free. For now, they are in the main basement with a lot of bike parts and maintenance materials on them, but when I'm done they will end up in the garage. Another $0 deal:

It will never be completely "done." You will always want to do something different. Building shelves, installing more light, organizing tools or space, etc.

Made some good progress this weekend.

Finished the last coat of joint compound, and sanded it down. I'm not great with mudding and sanding... it's not the best job, but it's good enough for a garage. I'm anxious to finish it so I'm not going to kill myself doing any more coats and/or sanding.

Then, I completely cleared the place out, swept the ceiling and all the walls (drywall dust... yuck), moved out all the tools, the bike, the table saw, etc. Swept out the floor, and it was time to get down to business. Bought all my primer, paint, and supplies:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/24%20clean%20primer%201paint/DSC02565Medium.jpg

Laid down plastic everywhere and carefully taped all the borders, corners, outlets, lights, etc. I didn't want to paint the concrete kneewalls in either room because when I eventually do the epoxy floor coating I intend to do those surfaces as well. Prep work:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/24%20clean%20primer%201paint/DSC02566Medium.jpg

Behr paints are so much better than the cheap shit in terms of not only looks, but coverage and spreadability. Do yourself a favor and don't cheap out.

Put on the primer:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/24%20clean%20primer%201paint/DSC02570Medium.jpg

Went for a good ride sunday morning, a couple hundred miles. Got back and did 1 coat of the finish paint:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/24%20clean%20primer%201paint/DSC02588Medium.jpg

Then I packed it up to watch the celtics game (GO C'S!!). Next weekend I'll do the last coat of paint.

Today I ordered the diamond plate baseboard that I mentioned ealier in this thread, it should arrive in time for me to install it this weekend. Then I'll seal it to the floor with caulking for waterproofing purposes, clean the shit out of concrete floor, and then it's just fun stuff left to do... like building all the shelves into the walls, building a workbench, setting up and organizing my toolchests, etc. So close!!

Yeah hanging drywall up over the studs is one thing that makes it look like it's progressing, and then the painting is the other. Those two things just visually change it so much you're like Damn!!!

Yeah someone else suggested to me I take some photos that are from the same vantage point as a few of the original ones to show the transformation.

This long weekend I was able to get a lot of the final things done. I'm really psyched right now. Most of these things didn't require a ton of work, but they make such a huge difference towards the appearance of being done that it really looks great now.

I did the final coat of paint all around. I also repainted parts of all three of the thresholds in black, since they got joint compound and/or paint on them. Other little black trim stuff outside was also given another coat. Here's the final coat of paint:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02624Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02625Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02627Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02629Medium.jpg

Intermittently I threw on all of the faceplates for the outlets and switches.

Next, I installed the diamond plate baseboard. I was able to do the whole main room with it. I couldn't do the one piece of wall I wanted to do in the small room because there were a couple pieces missing from the order, so I alerted the company and they will be here this week. Besides that, the people were nice and attentive (diamondlife I think the company is called) and also, the stuff looks great!!! Here's the parts that I did:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02657Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02658Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02660Medium.jpg

I used an aluminum-colored caulking meant for trim work to seal the baseboard to the floor all around the room. This means for washing the floor I never have to worry about moisture getting up under the wall, into the drywall and the wood. I could literally fill the room up with 4 inches of water. Here's a closeup of the caulking sealing the baseboard to the floor:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02656Medium.jpg

I installed shelving on all the walls in the small room. On the left are 8" deep shelves, the back wall has 12" deep shelves, and the whole right wall on either side of the doorway has 10" deep shelves.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02651Medium.jpg

Here's a little bling I had lying around... a couple old street signs. The bike route sign is from chicago, forget how I came into that. I used a concrete nailer to hang 'em:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02679Medium.jpg

Because of the low overhang between rooms, I decided to paint some caution stripes on the threshold. Several people (including me once, forgetting to duck) had already hit their head. So I just measured off a bunch of stripes with a ruler and pencil, taped it up with painter's tape, and used some high gloss red paint:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02680Medium.jpg

Later, I pulled away the tape, and it came out pretty nicely I think:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02686Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02685Medium.jpg

Next, I decided to take care of some more shelves in a few places. Since the shelves on the right wall in the small room are 10" deep, they protrude into the doorway a little bit. Thus, I figured I could utilize the space on the wall in the threshold between rooms.

I don't like having tons of bottles and aerosol cans everywhere and not being able to find them when I need them, so I designed and built a little rig to hold them:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02671Medium.jpg

I also cut some plywood shelves for the speakers and my stereo. I painted those and the shelves I made for the cans/bottles:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02672Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02673Medium.jpg

Then I installed the can rig I dreamt up. It fit pretty well and looks like it will be very handy:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02688Medium.jpg

Also installed the shelves for the speakers and stereo, and wired up the speaker wire outlets they will all utilize:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02682Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02683Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02691Medium.jpg

This last picture was right after I used a floor degreaser called greaseaid, a bristle brush on my hands and knees, and rags to clean the floor. That drywall dust is really ground in there pretty badly. I'm a little pissed about this, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort to get it all off right now since eventually I will need to prep the surface in both rooms for adherance of an epoxy floor coating when I have the time and money to do it. That will probably occur this fall. That is, unless someone has an easy solution for cleaning the floor that I could do quickly soon.

Then, here's another trick I had up my sleeve... hung up this bad boy:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02693Medium.jpg

Then I opened up the craftsman roller chests I bought three or so months ago, finally. I bought them at that time because they were on a killer sale but haven't been able to bring them into the garage obviously. The 5-drawer top chest had been damaged from the manufacturer/shipper, the lid wouldn't close and when put down on level ground it wobbled. I had to take that back to sears and get a replacement. They gave me no trouble at all and gave me a brand new one in exchange right away. After that hiccup, I got them all set up. When everything is in place, the lid of the top chest JUST clears the recessed lighting boxes I built. Yeah, I planned it that way carefully... right... haha. Here's the chests:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02696Medium.jpg

All the tool companies charge an arm and a leg for drawer liners for tool chests, like $20 a roll. I found rolls at harborfreight for $3, and got 11 rolls. This is enough to do all of my toolchests as well as the drawers that will be in my workbench when I build it. I test cut one drawer and the stuff is great, just as good quality as the craftsman (and others) drawer liners, nice and sticky, etc. Good way to save money for those of you who need some liners:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02711Medium.jpg

Then I started bringing stuff in from the main basement, like the bike and stands, my jack and jackstands, backup (old) tires, gas, more of my tools, etc. This is the garage in it's current state as I left it at the end of the weekend... basically 95% done!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

There is a bunch left to do, but for the most part, it's the way I want it.

Short term to-do's:

- Design and build workbench (I have a plan for this, just need to do it)
- Procure man-fridge to fit under said workbench to harbor tasty adult beverages (this is a HUGE necessity ;))
- Get everything out of the main basement that is mine, and get it organized and onto shelves and into tool chests
- Hang some hooks on the east wall for hanging up all my leathers and riding gear
- Finish the plumbing: right inside the main basement near the black door, install a big shop sink. Also, finish hooking up the outside faucet for washing cars/bike so the hose doesn't need to be drug out there every time.

Long-term to-do's:

- Grind/sand/etc concrete floor in both rooms, acid wash it, then apply medium gray epoxy base, then red/white/black paint flakes, then a nice think clear epoxy topcoat
- Buy a compressor, pour a concrete slab for it outside and build a 'doghouse' for it to 'live' in, plumb the air line in through the wall near the heater
- Tackle the main basement... lots of organization, trashing, and a little lighting/electrical work in there. Nothing anywhere near close to the work in the garage though. I'll take a break for now ;)

And it's not COMPLETELY done yet, but I can't help look back at this picture and compare:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/01%20Start/DSC01506Medium.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/25%20Mostly%20done/DSC02705Medium.jpg

Next weekend I will be doing a little bit on the garage, but it will mostly be related to packing for my trip and prepping the bike (this will include an onboard camera setup ;)) for the trip and all the track days involved. I will be gone for about two weeks, doing at least 3 track days, 5 days in deal's gap, 4 or 5 relaxing in SC, driving 2500-ish miles with the bike on the trailer, and doing a 1-day work thing on the way back. Extremely psyched for this trip.

I don't know.... I ordered R&G straight from the manufacturer in England, back in Feb, They sent them in April, but they forget to send the modified coolant bottle, They sent some diff sliders :wtf: then they sent the right bottle in April. I got to installing before the first 2 track days and the spacers were wrong.. Then I asked them to send me the right shit, they finally got back to me 2 weeks ago and said they were going to send it out.. AND I STILL DON'T FUCKING HAVE IT.. So.. Ya.. I hate R&G..

For reelz. Money's tight as is time, but I'm gonna start modeling cabinet and shelving designs for the "shop" pretty soon. Things is, I suck at dry wall.

I'd like to build a wall around the washer and dryer and install a sliding door much like closets have so the W/D don't get all covered in sawdust constantly. Not sure how I want to design it though.

I hear ya. I would LOVE an integrated workbench in the garage. Gonna do the shelving and junk soon when money frees up a bit. I'm getting married in October and the wife-to-be is demanding a spot in the garage to park her car. I've always parked my vehicles outside instead of in the garage so I'm going to need to free up some room with shelves. Possibly a shed in the back yard too.

I love doing projects. It's just getting my lazy nuts started that's the hard part.

Here's the basic outline of the garage. It's a two car with single doors. The red shapes are the water heater, washer and dryer. I want to wall in where the dotted lines are but just around the washer dryer area. To the right of the walled in washer dryer, will be the integrated work bench with shelving above it.

Squeeze a fatty out in the corner. FTW.

EDIT: After more Nerdom on the pooter...I think I want the workbench and walled in area to look something like this:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h61/Audiomechanic/Garage4.jpg

EDIT 2: Dang. Recooping from surgery sure does give me time on the computer! The garage will hopefully look like this when done:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h61/Audiomechanic/CropperCapture2-1.jpg

That ought to give me enough space for things. There will be a 3 piece sliding door in front of the washer dryer, cabinet doors below the workbench, and peg board in the space on the angled wall and back wall in between the workbench and shelving. Hopefully this'll increase my house value too.

That looks like a pretty good use of the space you have available. If you are going to make a really nice workbench, make it easily removable so you can take it with you when you move. That's what I'm going to do.

I would try to think of some ways to add more storage space in there... shelving over the W/D, etc.

Audiomechanic
06-09-2008, 07:52 PM
Aw yea. Shelving over the W/D is a must. I already have a workbench so the one I build into the house will stay there. Especially due to the bench being molded against the angled wall. Hopefully I'll have some money to do this within the next 6 months or so. Then I can make my OWN workshop thread. ;)

Did a couple little things the other day. Had a lot of other shit going on though. Work has been pretty rough lately.

The rest of the baseboard was installed, and I caulked the bottom with the aluminum-colored caulking there as well:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02825Large.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02826Large.jpg

Then I used a clear caulking on the TOP of the baseboard all the way around, so that liquids splashed on the walls wouldn't seep in behind them. In this pic it still looks like white caulking since it hadn't dried:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02828Large.jpg

And this closeup shows it dried:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02834Large.jpg

Unpacked all my trackside stuff and some other things and started organizing the storage room:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02839Large.jpg

The blue painter's tape allows paint to bleed under a bit so there were lots of marks like this:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02813Large.jpg

So I just grabbed some black pinstriping and outlined it all:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02814Large.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02815Large.jpg

Ended up cutting all the drawer liners for all my tool chests:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02816Large.jpg

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/26%20More/DSC02817Large.jpg

Now I'll be concentrating on building the bike back up in time for the next track days and installing all the goodies I'm getting. If there is spare time, I'll start the workbench... but for now all garage stuff will be on the back burner.

It's cool that I'm about to give this place some hardcore usage. Anyone wants to help when I get stuck and break shit, I'll food and beverage you :drink:

For fine detail work, if that stuff does what it's advertised to do, I'd say it's worth it. Otherwise you'll end up doubling the time you spend and spending the same money because your OCD-ass will be sitting there with car pinstriping and an exacto knife like me

As promised I gave the frog tape a shot today at work. I grabbed one of the 2 inch rolls that retails at a little under 12 bucks, put a couple pieces on a paint stick and painted around them. I painted over the edge of the tape like most painters would and after it dried peels the tape back off. Nothing special to it. Heres the final result...

http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/4158/tapekv5.th.jpg (http://img75.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tapekv5.jpg)

Perfectly clean edges. I was kind of skeptical but was honestly very impressed. If clean lines is something that youre anal about while painting, this is definitely the tape for you.

Wow that green tape looks like it works like a charm.

I noticed the other day at AutoZone that 3M (makers of the blue tape) appears to have come out with a response for the frog brand green tape... there's a green tape they now make that says it is meant for higher adherance and sharper paint line applications... I don't recall if it was cheaper than the frog brand though.

Just a couple little updates...

I'm not sure if it was really due to weight or just because it was so humid recently, but this set of shelves had a couple shelves that were looking a bit saggy, so I decided to throw an extra support on there:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/27%20More/DSC02948.jpg

Mounted a whiteboard above my toolchests... should be very helpful for making lists of supplies that have run out and whatnot:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/27%20More/DSC02949.jpg

Lastly... I know some of you guys are as anal/OCD as I am... and if so, your detailing products need to come from Zaino. This is hands down the best shit I've ever worked with, and their long detailed instructions on how to care for your finish using their products is very thorough. If you follow their steps, you'll have a mile-deep shine on any vehicle you own:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/27%20More/0703082041.jpg

It's not cheap, but you need to use so little of the product that it's actually a pretty good buy. The full kit with wax, polish, detail spray, car wash, polish activator with mixing bottles, and a couple of their VERY soft applicator pads is about 80 bucks. Check out www.zainostore.com

I think this saturday I might have a bit of spare time and if so I'll head to Ikea to get the workbench top and drawers ;)

oh yea, painters trick my pops taught me-takes alil skill, and maybe only applys to cars/bikes, but if you pull the tape damn near as soon as you paint it, just lettin it sit long enough to tack i guess, the edge will sorta roll over. feels smooth, but still straight with no bleed, damn near invisible except for the difference in color. never tryed it on a wall tho

Yeah the pipe is nasty in person. I still haven't ridden the bike though... they always sound different under load (like accelerating not just revving it in place). Can't wait to hear her at redline on the front straight... shit's going to sound like a damn F1 car.

Yeah I considered a trick like that... however the way I taped it all the tape was interconnected and by the time I painted all the stripes the paint on the first stripe would have already bled so pulling all the tape wouldn't have helped some of them.

Also, I needed to do two coats and would have had to re-tape. Good idea though

Couple more little things.

My good buddy Ebbs, who is in Korea with the military, got a red sox flag from someone. Since he isn't a huge fan, and he's a nice guy, he thought of me and my garage and shipped it to me. When he told me it was a red sox flag, I assumed something relatively cheap and screenprinted, which would have been fine and still generous.... but this thing is high quality! The material appears to be satin or something like it, and the whole logo is all stitched!!!Friggin' sweet!! THANKS BUDDY!!!!

I went to Ikea yesterday and bought a kitchen countertop (solid oak) and a 4-drawer kitchen base cabinet to start making the workbench. I need to grab a couple things from home depot (4x4's for the other two legs, bolts, etc) and then I'm ready to start building it.

I've got a pretty good plan in my head for building it, I think it will turn out really nicely.

Last week I went to Ikea and started buying the supplies. Couple things from home depot and I'm ready to start.

Couple little things...

Mounted a hook for my suit ;)

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/29/DSC03012.jpg

Purchased and organized all the parts I'll need to make my workbench.

I've got a thick, solid oak kitchen countertop for the top, along with sandpaper and polyurethane coating to finish it nicely.

Kitchen base 4-drawer cabinet that will support one side of the workbench and act as storage.

4x4's for the legs on the other side of the workbench, with lag bolts and washers.

1x4's for cross-bracing of legs/etc.

Since I've bought so many damn bike parts and they all came with stickers, I think I'm goign to seal a bunch of stickers under the polyurethane on the workbench top, I think it will look really nice.

This weekend I got a bunch done on the workbench, in addition to a bunch of Hooplah with selling and shipping some of the spare R6 parts I'm trying to get rid of.

First things first, I assembled the Ikea kitchen base cabinet and cut drawer liners for all the drawers. This thing is really nice for the money. Really solid drawer slides. There's even a built-in mechanism allowing you to adjust the drawer front alignment up/down and left/right with a screwdriver. Not bad for 100 bucks:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/30/DSC03066Large.jpg

Next, it was time to get to work on the countertop. It's a solid oak kitchen countertop from ikea... what a deal... 2.5" thick solid oak butcherblock, over 2 feet in depth and over 6 feet long for around 120 bucks (I think that's what it was). I took it outside and cut it to length. Then, I used some 220 grit sandpaper to give a light sand to the top and sides. Then I cleaned up all the dust with some tack cloth:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/30/DSC03067Large.jpg

I bought a couple packages of Parks' Super Glaze surface treatment. It's a VERY thick/viscous epoxy. Instead of using polyurethane and having to do 100 coats, I'll just do a few coats of this stuff, it says it's equivalent to 60 coats of poly, I htink I used it a bit thicker than that.

Since wood is so porous I mixed up a small batch and poured it on and spread it on really thin, just to seal up the surface and get it ready:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/30/DSC03068Large.jpg

The next day, I decided where I wanted to put all the stickers and how to orient them and such. I stuck them all on on top of the now-dry skim coat. I didn't have another twfix sticker, so that sucked. My local forum sent me spare white ones with the silver ones I bought, so that got on there. Trip is a cheap bastard so his forum will not be honored for all eternity in my workbench top.

Happy with the setup, I mixed up the rest of the two packages, saving a little bit for later since I will need to sand down edge drips and then recoat the edges. All in all it was about 1 3/4 quarts of the stuff... poured it on and spread it around carefully.

It started to set/cure and I am pretty happy with the result... it's amazingly clear and shiny. I will explain the gap on the right side in a second. Here's the benchtop, I tried to align the fluorescent light with a portion of the benchtop without any stickers when taking photos:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/30/DSC03085Large.jpg

The space on the right is for this bad boy I picked up... full 360 degree swivel both on the base and the throat... anvil on top, 5" jaws on one side, pipe jaws on the otherside. Thing's a beast:

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/30/DSC03089Large.jpg

The Parks' Super Glaze is pretty resilient... if you slam a wrench on it or something it will deflect, but over time it will recover. Even still, this is a workbench, so I'm considering picking up another package and adding several more /32"s to the coating. Also, I forgot a couple of the Akrapovic stickers I meant to put on so I could add those too haha.

This bench looks like it will turn out really nice. I ordered a couple swivel leveling feet that will thread into the bottom of the 4x4's for leveling the bench, those will show up before next weekend.

Basically I'm spending as much money on the bench as it would cost to buy the one I was looking at from Sears... except this thing will be a hell of a lot nicer.

I had some other obligations this weekend and some bike work so I only did a few garage things.

I Threw a couple more stickers on the workbench and then laid another coat of Super Glaze down. I figure since this is a workbench it's going to get beat up pretty badly... the extra thickness of glaze should help.

Last time I didn't cover it during curing which I didn't think was a big deal, but when little bits of dust touch down in the first few hours after application the dust itself isn't visible but it makes a very visible indentation due to the high surface tension of the liquid. So pouring and spreading the new coat filled all those imperfections, and then I hung a sheet over it to prevent it from happening again (hopefully).

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/31/DSC03130Large.jpg

I ordered some swivel leveling feet from Grainger that will go in the bottom of the 4x4s that will serve as two of the legs for the workbench.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/31/DSC03111Large.jpg

A couple photos I picked up arrived. I'm going to get some frames for them and hang them up. One is Valentino Rossi leading Jorge Lorenzo and Nicky Hayden from the 2008 MotoGP race in Laguna Seca CA. The other is a print of an autographed photo of the king of smooth himself, Kenny Roberts.

So this weekend I was going to do some work on the bike but decided to backburner it in favor of getting my workbench built. I want to get the garage more organized and get my tools all where I want them, and the workbench is a big step in getting there.

I mounted the workbench top to two 4x4's with 4 lag bolts each, countersunk into the benchtop and then I used the little bit of superglaze I had left to coat those holes.

I mounted the Ikea kitchen base cabinet to the workbench and then used some 1x3 strapping to add some stability to the legs. The adjustable swivel feet I showed before went into the bottoms of the legs and work great.

Next time I go out there I'll grab some bolts and mount my vice to the table since the superglaze will be dry by then.

Here she is, all done except for the vice.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/32/DSC03155Large.jpg

I swept the garage up and now I just need to get all my tools in order and utilize all my chest/drawer space more efficiently.

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff187/ceo012384/2007%20Garage%20Construction/32/DSC03158Large.jpg

I also keep forgetting to install the network cable outlet I bought... that way I can have a laptop at the workbench. Need a bench stool too.

Regardless, the garage is now in a state that will allow for lots of work to be done on the bike this winter in preparation for getting it ready for me to race it ;)

Thanks dude.

The parents already have a whole hardwired network setup in the building and don't want to add another branch to it. There is a hub with an open port fairly close by that will require minimal work for me to run the cable.

Yeah I need a good stool for the bench... I want to grab one of these, maybe someone can get it for me for christmas ;)

The wreck has turned out fine... got a lot of parts and a full track setup (I think I'll be keeping the street stuff so after I'm done racing the bike I can put it back to stock and sell it mint, then sell all the trick parts... should make mad $$). I'll race the bike for a few years at least methinks.

If you look closely you'll notice there is a board bracing the two legs to eachother, and then another board in the back that runs from the rear leg across the back to the cabinets, so everything is braced.
