View Full Version : Blu-ray discs cracked from Netflix...
James

5 out of the first 6 blu-ray discs I got from Netflix have a small crack in them - see this page for perfect example. (http://marsbox.com/blog/news/cracked-netflix-blu-ray-disc-problem/)
Just wondering how many of you have been having the same problem.
Pretty fuggin' annoying.
waste of money, too expensive for how short this technology will last. On demand will replace everything shortly.

I probably won't upgrade to Blu-Ray for some time, so I have no personal experience to add to this, but I can tell you that optical discs are recorded from the center outward, and that any cracks towards the outside of the disc are unlikely to affect the data, unless the disc is very full.
You can usually see where the pits are burned on the disc. If the data doesn't come all the way to the crack, it should be fine.
That said, it would appear that some processing equip. is mishandling the discs.

So far, only one of them played OK - the one with the smallest crack heh
FWIW - I picked up Sony blu-ray player for only 229 and blu-ray access in netflix is a whopping 1.00 a month extra - neither of the two will impact my life/budget so whatever. This wasn't intended to be a debate over blu-ray being worth the money.

I'll keem my DVD collection and not buy into the HD and blu ray crap to begin with. thank you very much. as was said already, on demand will replace that soon anyhow.
I'm going to say some machine somewhere in the netflix processing center is malfunctioning/broke/not running right.

I fixed the poll. Please see sticky on polls next time at the top of OT.
Well Blue Ray has already out lasted HD DVD.
But truth be said... if you pay enough... you can get a DVD player to display better picture than a blu ray. Sure it might cost $2k+. But like DVD players... blu ray players aren't all equal.

Really... I thought it was decent without going over board.
But if you're going to describe some succubus whore and truly capture the spirit of the woman, wouldn't a little creative hyperbole be welcome? Sure, she's a whore, and maybe a filthy whore, depending on her bathing habits and vaginal cleanliness, but does that really encompass this woman who I've never met but am jumping on the bashing bandwagon in the spirit of the rules?

I would jump on the blu-ray bandwagon if they would stop fucking us with 25-30/disk features. (2x the cost of DVD)

That's really just ridiculous. I'm sorry Tater's wife is a whore - for whatever reason, but making that a rule...I hope you are kidding.
:idk:
Also, that may have been easier to see if there weren't so many others.

Once the price of the media drops, I'm buying a Blue-Ray RW for my PC... saw one advertised for $99 on Black Friday... I just want a more significant means to backup my pr0n collection... 50 Blue-Rays sounds a hell of a lot better than 100 DVD's...

Back on topic for a change,I had problems with Netfliks period and quit them some time ago. I now use Blockbuster,I pay $20 a month, they send movies to my door,I can bring them to the store and get free rentals or just drop them off. I find that I get a lot more movies this way as I don't have to wait for USPS to return my old movies before I get new ones sent. In fact, even when I turn in my old movies to get my free rentals in the store,it triggers the system to send my next movies in line. I had 4 or 5 movies at my house at one time.

The Netflix setup on the Xbox is nice, but in no way is it a replacement for the discs getting mailed to you. In addition to the already limited selection of the instant queue, that selection is further cut back by certain companies not allowing their movies to be streamed to the Xbox/Netflix setup, so right now it's more of a novelty than a functional tool for movie watching.

Can i begin with saying that I hate hate hate Blu-Ray with a passion! I always have and I always will. This is the same shit that was going on when this technology was released... (hairline fractures and even smudging rendering the disks useless). They said they've improved disk durability, and i almost believed them.. until i saw this. I still cant understand how HD DVD lost to this crap....

I'd like to know how they hold up under normal conditions. Judging the viability of Blu-Ray based on how it gets butchered passing through multiple hands and multiple processing facilities through Netflix isn't a realistic judging of how the media holds up under normal wear and tear usage.

HD-DVD "lost" because Sony padded their numbers by counting every PS3 as a Blu-Ray player. Had that not been done, the difference in the number of players sold would not have been as dramatic, and the studios would not have dropped HD-DVD so quickly.
It may not be the only reason but I think it had a large part to do with it.

But with the speed the discs spin in the player, it could potentially be a problem as the discs can possibly split and screw up the player.

It's possible. Mythbusters blew some up, but they had to spin them on a fucking router motor to do it. Even compromised, they're hard to explode.
What can also happen, is that the crack will cause the disc to wobble, and not focus up right.
It's clearly not ideal, but if the crack is small, and it doesn't reach the data, I'd probably try to play it if it was a rental.

ACTUALLY untill recently... the PS3 Bluray player was the ONLY player available that was upgradeable to the diffrent versions of Bluray.
I'm not sure how you can say it sucks... what do the others offer that the PS3 doesn't? I've never had an issue with mine... works perfect... though spend the $25 and get the remote... makes life 10000x easier
and aside from that... the cheapest bluray player is gonna look like gold to anyone who's never seen a HD movie...

Just got two replacements last night. One OK the other, which would be two discs in a row - same movie - both arrived cracked (and i know for sure it isn't the same one). Like 1/2" crack in this one...crazy.
They're gonna have to use different shipping method, even if they have to charge more I think.

That's weird! I had problems with scratching with NF but not cracks. Zero problems with BB except they sometimes don't take movies out of my queue that I rent in store.
