There are Cali plates on the cars, so it probably is.

He was going too fast, you're only supposed to go 15mph faster than the cars you're passing.

At least now he can hopefully buy a better bike than the Kan-o-tuna.

Wrong. There is no speed limits on passing speeds. However, there is such a thing as "reasonable and prudent speed" when the cops look at the way you split lane.

Two issues:

1. This dude went too fast for that condition. I've seen worse though, but still he went too fast.

2. That son of a bitch on that minivan should get his ass kicked for trying to cross the yellow line. That was totally his fault.

Agreed.

The Van had a solid white AND double yellows, it was his responsibility not to cross those lines.

Didn't know that, thanks for the info.

So even though the rider was moving faster than was prudent, he should have been in clear due to the fact that no vehicles on either side of him should have attempted to cross the solid white/double yellow? Or is he still screwed because he was lane splitting on the double yellow?

Lane splitting in Cali is nothing. BE a real man. Lane split through Manhattan!

Lane splitting is legal in Cali, why would he be screwed?

Knowing lane splitting is legal and seeing it all the time, the driver should have:

1. Not crossed the double yellow line.
2. Checked his mirrors before attempting a lane change.
or
3. NOT CROSSED THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE.

I'll have to go watch it again. His speed didn't seem unreasoanble to me. :idk:

It was obvious that the cage tried to cross over the yellow, so it's a case closed.

As long as the lane splitter didn't cross over the double yellow or weaving in and out, he's pretty much clear. IN THIS CASE. Usually, even though lane splitting is legal in California, if there's a collision, it's pretty much the rider's fault because he "doesn't" have to split lane and if he were and got into a crash then it's no longer "reasonable and prudent".

really? that's the first thing I thought when I watched it... was like fuck he's gonna be fucked if someone opens a door (something that I've seen happen more than once in cali)

personal preference... but I'd not go more than 5 mph faster and not more than 15mph total... it'll get you where you wanna go... it'll keep you from over heating... and gives you enough reaction buffer to keep you from getting fucked.

had he slowed down 10mph he'd have had a better chance of seeing what that car was gonna do... (in heavy traffic like that people stop paying attention to the double yellow)

In this case, he was riding the line. Meaning, he wasn't in either lane. There is no law that allows lane splitting - there just isn't a lane against lane sharing (like there is in every other state). Key is, you need to be sharing a lane not dodging in and out of the lane (or not in a defined lane).

True - the minivan shouldn't have crossed the line. Ever.

I blame the camera.

Why is it that nearly every time some fucking yahoo puts a camera on his bike, he ends up on his lips?

I lived in LA for a long time, and split lanes on a daily basis. I actually preferred it to "normal" traffic, (less chance of taking a Buick up your ass that way). Yeah, obviously the van was in the wrong, but it's California for fuck sakes, you have to expect that shit. His speed may have been a tad high, but not so much that he couldn't have avoided that crash, if he didn't suck at lane splitting.

The key to lane splitting is to watch for gaps in the flow. If a gap opens up, there is a 99% chance that some impatient motherfucker is going to try to fill it with his car. Even if they do check their mirror first, there's still a good chance they aren't going to see you in time, because they're so goddamn desperate to make eight feet of progress in a twenty mile commute. When you see a gap opening up, that's the time you roll off the throttle slightly, and get ready to dynamite your brakes.

Lane splitting is serious business. It does not lend itself well to inattentiveness, and videos of how cool you are.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. If you were lane splitting in Manhattan, how would you know?

i didnt bother watching the vid-but lane splitinng kicks ass. my morning commute is 10mins cuz theres no traffic

evening commute is ten mins cuz i split, not even weaving and speedin, just whenever i have to stop at a light, i make my way to the front. if i rode like a idiot i could probably get home in 5mins-whenever i take the car it takes 25-35mins to get home

I've never seen the full vid. He smacked the hell out of that van with the broken forks.

He didn't seem too unreasonable fast to me. Camera quality kind of sucks and was choppy so it may have appeared to be faster. If anyting if he had been gloing slower he might have nailed the very back of the van.

I'd lane split in Atlanta but here in Atlanta they don't give a fuck if you have red or blue flashing lights. All they care about is wether moving over for a firetruck, ambulance or cop will benefit them. If not it's up to the paramedics/firefighters to figure something out. I've seen cars get on the asses of ambulances for going too slow.

if he BROKE the forks... he was going too fast... IMO

He was on a Katana. Probably held together with crazy glue.

Again probably faster than he should have been going (Probably 25-30mph with traffic flowing between 0-10mph) but I don't think it's that bad.
