Billie Watts, 75, told The Daily News Journal that she discovered the money inside a tapestry bag hanging from a hook on a stall door last Thursday.

But five days later, the money and its anonymous owner remain something of a mystery in the community, where police said that they have no report of the find.

While digging through the bag to figure out its owner, Watts says she found a bundle of neatly stacked $1,000 bills.

Watts said she and her husband took the money home, but later called the restaurant back and asked if there was a lost-and-found department. She was told yes, and left her number.

A woman called about 15 minutes later and verified she was the owner by identifying pictures left in the bag. Watts returned the bag to the owner, whom she described as an elderly woman, but said she does not have the woman's last name or phone number.

Watts said the woman told her that the money came from selling her home and her belongings and that she was going to start a new life in Florida with her son. Watts says the woman offered to pay her $1,000, but Watts refused it.

A manager of the Cracker Barrel restaurant, Bill Shupp, said no employees actually saw the money or the elderly owner.

When phil and I were servers at Red Lobster for awhile. One of the other servers found an envelope with $1400 left in it. They gave it to the manager and when the guy came back in frantic looking for his money and the manager told himt hat one of the servers found it and turned it in...he asked who it was...they brought him out and the guy handed over $300

guessing that one would quickly be caught should they try to cash a 1k bill - its not like they are uber common. Wonder if they would have returned it if it was all 20s or 100s.

yea i can google the image too... my point is that they were introduced in the late 20s and have not been in circulation for a very long time. she cant just go to a store and use them. and if she did, it would likely be a bad move as they probably have historical value for collectors.

You know what's sad? It's sad that this made the NEWS.

I'd actually rather see more shit like this... The media sinks their teeth into anything shitty and blabs on about it incessently for weeks... I'm a negative motherfucker by nature, but even sometimes the news bums me out. I'd say this is 10000000000000x more newsworthy than what sort of parking tickets Britany Spears got...

The biggest bill used today is the $100. If she would bring those bills in a bank, they would accept as they are legal tender. However, the bank is required to turn them over to the Federal Reserve were they are removed from circulation. You can NOT get big bills anymore from the bank.

Those $1000 bills are sought after by collectors who would gladly pay an additional 50% over face value for decent bills.

If any of them were silver or gold certificates, condition is everything and the sky is the limit on price. :willy:

Yep. A buddy of mine worked at a bank and a woman brought in two $1000 bills to deposit. The manager called the bank owner (small town) and he drove to the bank and "bought" them for 1k each. Got a helluva deal in my opinion.

...normally I'd agree...if the story were true...

the article mentions numerous times that no one. at all. except the claimed "finder" and the Billie fellow, have any record/report/evidence of said event ever occuring. No finding reported. No money or elderly woman spotted. Sad that someone would make that up, but that's the way it seems... :idk:

My thinking exactly.

Ironic how quick everyone is to kiss this lady's ass for being so honest when it is obvious the story is a lie.
