Just got a call from my best friend, my office back home just announced theyare laying off 35 engineers today!!! That's about 2/3's of the office. Guess I'm safe on my field assignment but have no idea what that leaves me for when I get back in 7 months. And my 2 best friends work there so waiting to hear their fate. Suck

Sucks - it's been happening all over. Our client project teams have been getting demaciated .
what kinda engineering?
All kinds, just look on tva.gov careers page. Look for spring city listings, we are building the first new nuke reactor to come online since we did it last in the 90's. Bechtel the contractor for the project is also hiring a ton. I think they are bechtel.com, but that is a contractor position so it's not permanent.

Electrical Engineer in a Consulting firm, do mainly power plant work. The problem with nuke design for new stuff is that our new fearless leader doesn't want it. That part of the problem, we just bought out Washington group to get their nuke experience, and now we won't need it in a year. oops
Hey Trip, trust me, I've been talking like crazy to get L to stay out here but don't see it happening. Guess I'll have to treenter the world of cubical farms I hate so fricken much.
I should know more this afternoon if I need to start looking or not.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits surged to a 26-year high last week, Labor Department data showed on Thursday, as a deepening recession forced employers to cut back on hirings.
Initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits jumped by 58,000, the biggest increase since September 2005, to a seasonally adjusted 573,000 in the week ended December 6 from an upwardly revised 515,000 the previous week. That was the highest print since November 1982, when 612,000 workers submitted new claims for unemployment benefits.
A Labor Department official said there were no special factors influencing the report. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast 525,000 new claims versus a previously reported figure of 509,000 the week before.
The four-week moving average of new jobless claims, a better gauge of underlying labor trends because it smoothes out week-to-week volatility, rose to 540,500 from 526,250 the prior week, the highest since December 18, 1982 when a reading of 554,500 was recorded.
Continuing claims jumped to 4.43 million in the week ended November 29, also a 26-year high, from 4.09 million the previous week. The 338,000 increase in continuing claims matched the gain recorded in the week ended November 30, 1974.

3500 is about mid-size for KC.
Either way, i'm going into pay-off bill mode full throttle now just in case. Got 6 more months of field pay to get ahead.
Anyone want to buy a DRZ?? Might make a good deal for ya. haha

That sucks...good luck with the hunt!
A friend of ours works for Pitney Bowes/Map Info and they just laid off 128 people in two offices up here. He got lucky, as he's in management. Three others in the same group of friends are jobless as well. It really sucks. I just hope they don't decide to start cutting here, as I'd be the first to go.

Damn, hate to hear that Ryan. Hope all works out ok for you. Sounds like you're taking the right approach to get bills paid off. Although, I sometimes wonder what is best...to pay things down, or save the money. I think if you can't afford to pay something completely off, then it's best to save the money so you can use it for monthly payments. But a lot of that depends on the amount we're talking about, including interest %. Again, hope all works out well for you.

I've always debated that one. I usually save it up till i can pay it off in a chunk. The wife starts back to work as soon as we get back so relly i'm just trying to get monthly bills down.

I would sure like to know what the working population is estimated to be for both record dropping weeks. IMO percentage if working population is more relevant than "media shock" records and figures.
Unfortunately, my layoff came in October when the investment banks started seeking a bailout from the government. Since then I have been able to only find a few short weeks of temporary work. It came very unexpected for me, but I believe I will pull through it ok in the end.

so far every electrical brought in has been let go which is about half our group. They are actually escorting people straight out the building!!! No 2 weeks or anything.

Sorry to hear this Ryan. Hope all works out well for you in the end.
My roommates dad works at AB in St. Louis and they find out tomorrow if he is getting laid off. He said the plan is to move to a company in Cali that has been talking to his dad for a while.

I'd still be on the lookout for opportunities somewhere more stable when you get back if I was you though. That's messed up.

Sorry to hear that hunny, glad you made it through tho...
Im with Trip tho, start looking for a more stable type thing, and I know wives are stubborn, but if you find a job elsewhere, shes gonna have to suck it up and deal. Whats more important, supporting the family, or living near the extended family?
