I do ITA TKD because the schools are very structured. You know what you need to know for each testing cycle and you know when the testing cycles are. With many of the schools, it's easy to get derailed, lose interest, or get off track.
With ITA, you can walk into any school anywhere in the country and be allowed to attend class and learn the exact same curriculum.
ITA has also done something unique with BJJ. They have taken the same very structured approach to teaching something that is VERY difficult to teach and learn. If you've ever looked into BJJ, most of the schools are either tattoo fest, MMA brawl pits or if they are good are taught by someone who learned from Gracie or one of his direct off-shoots. Gracie doesn't teach with ANY kind of structure. Learning from any of the Gracie clan is like learning from a Kung Fu Monk. You are ready when THEY say you are ready and you really never know where you are or if you are learning anything.
They've done such a good job of breaking down BJJ into a teachable, structured curriculum that the Gracies have been trying to buy the system from ITA. Larry Shealy (google him if you don't know who he is) was contracted by ITA to help them develop the curriculum. He supplied the training and knowledge. ITA supplied the structure and the design.
I like TKD as a traditional Martial Art with BJJ as the solution to the "problem" when the fight goes to ground.

My college has a judo course i am thinking about taking either over the summer or next fall. They also have a second advanced course. It would at least serve as a building block for other things.

A mixture of everything, Ju Jitsu is very practical. Combat Hop Kido, Tae Kwon Do, Crab Magaw (israeli fighting style) or russian sambo they are all very good and all have strengths and weaknesses what ever you decide to do; do different stuff. If your a purist in just 1 martial art your bound to get your ass whooped(especially the karate guys in my experience they think they are hot shit then you take them to the ground and they cry). It also depends on your teacher he/she can make it fun and a hard workout or you can have an absolute douche bag like most teachers who want to get you into fights and runt heir school like boot camp. Treat it like everything you get what you put into it, but have fun.
My class for example is a mixture of Ju Jitsu Judo Combat Hop Kido and a bit of kempo karate
And by the way Judo without ju jitsu is useless. Congrats you know how to throw someone now what.

Martial arts or any sparring type sport isn't just about fighting. :p It teaches self control, confidence, aside from self defense. ;)
I took shotokan for a couple of years. I'd love to take BJJ and Akido, but it's not taught here. :(

I'll take a BJ too... oh wait..
About the martial arts thing... yeah, if you just want to win a fight, bring a gun. However, the benefits to strength, reflexes, and mental focus that martial arts offer could make you better with a gun as well.

There are places popping up that teach MMA style martial arts... Blending a lot of different styles with the ultimate goal to just whip someone's ass.

If you have a good instructor most any of them are good to get in to. It's definitely more to it than just the ability to fight/defend yourself although that is the main reason most get involved.
I was an ametuer boxer before getting into TKD. I learned right quick about the power and length of a leg/foot v.s just relying on my fist.
I left TKD for Kempo Karate because it suited me better for my job in executive protection because it combined soft fist techniques.
There are so many to choose from it's easy to get overwhelmed but again...if you can find a good instructor...any of them is better than none of them.
These days with the popularity of MMA if you can find a place that trains for this with good instructors imho it is your best bet.
It's better to be well rounded and good at several different styles v.s. an expert in one imho in case you get taken out of your element.
Having said this...it's really up to you and what you want out of it.
To the OP...good luck man...and congrats on your accomplishments. :dthumb:

My son is 6 and he has been in TKD for about a year now. He got his yellow belt a couple of months ago and just won 3 medals in his first tournament.
1. Form
2. Sparring -winning against both orange and blue belt students older than him
3. 3rd place overall in the tournament
Since he lives 1/2 way across the state and I wasn't told he was going to be in a tournament I didn't get to see it in person. however, hs mother told me last week about it and I'll get to see it on DVD soon. :rockwoot:

Congrats to OP (which I forgot in my first post).
Most others have said make sure you get a good instructor...how do I know if the instructor is good? What should I be looking for when I check out the class? How many classes should it take for me to know if the instructor is good or not?
Granted, when I was in Korea, I learned within about a month that the instructor there sucked. A. He raised prices 3 times in that one month. B. He wanted me (and several others) to test for yellow within that first month. I barely even knew what the hell I was doing yet. C. He was having a birthday party for himself and wanted all of the students there. He said it's customary for students to bring the teacher a gift. I quit right after that.

Yea treat an instructor like anyone else, judge their character and put yourself in his position what would you charge how would you teach, they are people too. If you don't feel you are working hard enough or are working too hard switch classes or ask the teacher for an alternate workout.

Those Korean teachers are awfully arrogant.
They tell you things like "You move like a pregnant yak" and make you train in dangerously high places.

I'm taking a combatives class this week and it's really opening my eyes.
After talking to some of the instructors I am seriously considering starting training back home. There is a new place that teaches MMA/Judo with (from what I've heard) a very qualified instructor. I will definatly be checking that out when I get home.
I'm not one to start fights, but it's good to know how to end them.

I don't know about TKD, but in shotokan, each kata has an application and is built upon a certain attack. They not only discipline but use the series of movements to show an application. Doing a kata in and of itself doesn't make much sense, other than to move from one technique to another. However, they can be applicable in sparring, or kumite, by putting a series of movements/techniques together with better ease, instead of being rough. Practicing kata helps you practice moving from one technique fluidly to another for the best results, whether it be attacking or for defense. It also teaches discipline, basics, etc as you move through your ranks.
There's much to learn from kata alone. Don't think because it looks like a ballet, it's weak. It's not. Next time you spar, try setting your opponent up and using a combination of techniques. Without practice, it's rough and not the best attack...or defense. Kata helps you practice. If you don't like the combinations you're taught in kata, then make your own. Practice those movements in kata form, pretending that you're being attacked and watch how well you learn to move through the techniques in real sparring.
Have you ever tried looking for videos of your katas on youtube? If you look, I'm sure you can find where the kata is actually acted out in a mock attack. Maybe you'll better understand them if you can see a mock attack. :)
