Who Are Better Drivers: Men or Women?

MSN sheds some light on which sex is the better motorist — one of the most hotly debated arguments since 'Which came first, the chicken or the egg?'

By Chuck Tannert of MSN autos

Statistically speaking, women are better drivers than men.

Famed composer Irving Berlin captured the battle between the sexes quite succinctly in his legendary song "I Can Do Anything Better Than You" from the 1946 Broadway musical "Annie Get Your Gun." Gunslingers Annie Oakley (Ethel Merman) and Frank Butler (Ray Middleton) lyrically debated who could shoot more accurately: she or he? But what they were really fighting about was which sex is the more capable: man or woman? That same argument has been waged many times, about many topics over the years. But no gender-related discussion has been more heated than the one that rages behind the wheel. So who are better drivers: men or women?

The Answer Is ...

In a recent study released by Quality Planning, an analytics company that validates policyholder information for auto insurers, women came out on top (sorry guys).

The study analyzed different kinds of vehicle code violations (traffic violations) and then compared how many times men were cited versus women. The conclusion was that men break more traffic laws and drive more dangerously than women. Because they violate laws designed to make the roads safer, men cause more accidents and expensive damage.

"We were not surprised to see that men have slightly more violations — about 5 percent — that result in accidents than women," said Raj Bhat, president of Quality Planning. "And because men are also more likely to violate laws for speeding, passing and yielding, the resulting accidents caused by men lead to more expensive claims than those caused by women."

Topping the list is the finding that men are cited for reckless driving 3.41 more times than women. Reckless driving is considered one of the most serious traffic offenses by courts since it implies a disregard for the rights and safety of people or property.

Violations for which men scored at least 50 percent higher than women:

TYPE OF VIOLATION RATIO M:F
Reckless driving 3.41
DUI 3.09
Seatbelt violations 3.08
Speeding 1.75
Failure to yield 1.54
Stop sign/signal violation 1.53

Evidence Gets Worse:

Guys, when it rains it pours. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more men than women die each year in motor vehicle crashes. "Men take more risks behind the wheel than women, and so men are more likely to get into serious crashes," says Anne McCartt, the institute's senior vice president of research. "We don't have any way of comparing their driving abilities, but on the likelihood of getting into a serious crash in which someone dies, men win handily."

On the Flip Side

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also reported that from 1975 to 2003, female deaths in motor vehicle crashes increased 14 percent, compared with an 11 percent decline for male motorists during that same period. Insurance industry experts peg the rise in female deaths in vehicular crashes to more women obtaining driver's licenses than in the past and driving more miles than, say, 25 years ago.

Plus, it seems as if female motorists are getting more aggressive. "It's true that men do take more risks than women," says Carolyn Gorman, vice president of the Insurance Information Institute. "However, [women] are partaking in more risky behaviors than ever before. The gap is closing quickly."

So Are Women Better Drivers Than Men?

Many auto insurance industry experts would agree with the theory that men, especially young men, tend to drive more aggressively than women and display their aggression in a direct manner, rather than indirectly. Furthermore, as a rule of thumb, male drivers are more likely than women to break the law, and the male of the species tends to be more of a risk-taker.

Even so, it's hard to say women are better drivers, although they are statistically safer. Women have just as many accidents as men; however, they tend to be minor fender-benders. Men, on the other hand, tend to do the job properly when they crash, and as a result cost their insurance companies a lot more money.

So, even though it's a blow to our male egos, we'll have to give this round to women. Sorry fellas.

Anyone have a statistic to show average miles travelled per year by male and female drivers?

This is more of who are safer drivers debate, not better drivers debate. A safer driver debate is no contest when you factor in 16-50 year old men with lead feet trying to win that interstate trophy waiting for us at the office or house.

As for better driver, that question is not really a good one because of the lack of opportunity that women have in the world of motorsports. They either get a primrose path if they are pretty enough (danica) even if they aren't a top tier driver or they get run out of the sport before they had their chance. It's not really a fair debate to answer, but as of now the only ones with top tier training and practice are men.

Woman wouldn't get any tickets at all if they would just stay in the kitchen.

This doesn't account for the women that work their way out of a ticket.

Interesting. The data here seems to contradict that study:

If you check driving records, my wife is a MUCH safer driver than I am. But if we're in a situation that requires evasive maneuvers or regaining control of the car once it's in a skid, I know we'd both rather have me at the controls.

Safer doesn't always mean better.

Women make stupid mistakes due to inattention or incompetence.
Men make serious mistakes due to "fuck you asshole I'm getting there first"

In summary
The study has revealed that women can't drive vehicles properly and need the laws in place to prevent them from harming others.

Men ignore the laws because they are taking the pent up anger of having to deal with cars driven poorly by women and releasing that pent up anger on the road.

My wife is a REALLY safe driver. She obeys speed limits and takes it nice and easy.
She has also totalled every car she's owned.

Honestly, if a study sponsored by the auto insurance industry told me that the sky was blue, I'd have to double-check it with my own eyes to make sure they weren't lying.

So is it better to crash while protecting your position and trying not to overdirve your equipment or is it better to crash while trying to race to the front? Will your sponsors care?

Personally I would rather crash pushing the limits and my luck than just minding my own business and getting run over.

Go ahead and start with the hate but I personally feel that most women have no business being behind the wheel of any automobile.

Again, I said MOST, not all. There are some good women drivers maybe even great women drivers, many of whom I am friends with and might even be on this site but the majority of them take driving as a secondary afterthought to what ever else they are doing at the moment. I have had multiple accidents over the years and in every case each accident was caused by a woman with the exception of one.

if you change it to most females you've been in direct contact with, i'd completly agree. 90% of the females ive ridden with drive like shit, as opposed to 50% of the males whos car ive been in are shitty drivers.

honestly i think about 60% of ppl that drive, males and females, drive like shit, and 90% of the time, being a competent motorcycle rider makes you a better driver.

bottom line tho-who gives a shit? sure, she drives like crap, but shes hot and coming to pick me up, in her fancy car that her daddy gave her, so what if she almost kills us both, its exciting, i like to live on the edge

I guess if you call "good driving" careful, slow driving...........Women would be the best. But when it comes to real driving (i.e. performance driving), MOST women are pussies, because they're too afraid to push the machine for fear that they'll "hurt" it.

"Stop revving so high, you're hurting it!" "Stop spinning the tires, you might break something!"

The term "Better" is ambiguous at best. Better, to an insurance company is simply "Whomever negatively affects our margin less" nothing more, nothing less.

Better to me, is someone who can better control the vehicle under adverse or extreme conditions and actually takes the job seriously. I think in most cases that is men, if for no other reason than experience.
I've been riding motorcycles since I was 13, have operated tractors and farm equipment, driven Log trucks, fire engines, fork lifts from little tippy tow motors to tracked dozers with forks, log skidders and lots of crappy old stuff with no brakes and steering so loose I would be sawing the steering wheel back and forth 180 degrees just to go straight, 450 HP cars back in the day that didn't corner, and had brakes that didn't stop worth a shit. Most women in this country have not. The ones that have are probably a better driver than me. The men that have not had the experience that builds reflexes and "correction alarms" in their heads are going react wrong too, for the most part.
Cars today are so easy to drive that anyone can drive one, even people that shouldn't, male and female. They allow "distracted and unskilled" drivers to get away with it for a long time past when they should have taken the bus.

This thread is funny, at best.

Truly.

There is one thing that is absolute. Above all else, everyone is absolutely certain they are a better driver than the next person. Everyone is.

I know some pretty fine drivers, both male and female. That being said, when driving on a public roadway women drivers usually scare me more often than men - though, mouthbreathers are the worst... especially when they are distracted AND mouthbreathing.

come to florida. nearly every woman here, or at least 95% of them, cant drive for shit.
I need to buy an M35A2C with a big fucking bumper on the rear right at radiator height for those mercedes driving teen girls who insist on sitting an inch from my bumper.

I'm noticing that the women here REALLY cant drive, they either sit on my bumper, yap on that phone that needs to go up their ass, or are too busy making themselves look like a clown with the makeup in the rearview mirror. our men here have a legitimate excuse for being the assholes we are, we're just tryin to avoid gettin killed by some skank on her phone or grandma who is half blind and cant even see over the wheel.

the number of citations is a bs data source.

Officers can choose or not in many cases whether the infraction warrants a citation - I know so many women who have gotten out of tickets just because they're hot and more than one has been asked for their number upon being pulled over.

Men hands down can drive an automobile better than women. However, women prolly cost insurances companies less coin, therefore under their assumption they are "better drivers".

That's a generalization anad doesn't apply to all women.

Here is my take on it. Most women I know, learn to drive at a much later age than men. As we all know, when we are younger we learn things MUCH faster. As we get older our own brains get in the way, we tend to over-think things a little more as we get older.

Now, driving (once you have done it for a while) becomes like second nature, you don't really need to think about how to turn the wheel at a corner or how hard to press the brake when you want to stop at a traffic light.

The younger you are, the less cluttered your mind is with all the crap that comes with age/adult-hood, hence I believe someone younger has a better chance of driving becoming like "second nature" than someone older.

Take that into consideration, most guys learn to drive at 14-16 where most women I know, didn't start till 17-18. I think those couple of years can make the difference in someone's driving skills.

Now, back to the original comment, some of us women started driving at 13 (I drove to Georgia with my dad on a weekly basis and took over when he was sleepy) I drive just as well if not better than some or most of the guys I have met. I have more experience behind the wheel than they do.

It's all a matter of how and when you learn.

Here is my take on it. Cliffs Notes: Big generalization about when people learn to drive.

It's all a matter of how and when you learn. I don't know any women that started driving years after guys did. And I doubt the learning curve from 14-16 to 17-18 is that steep. The brain develops most from 6-13 for Language skills, then plateaus. I'm not sure that age is universal for all skills though, motor skills and hand/eye coordination could be much different.:idk:
