View Full Version : Big Johnson (aka the Fail Fads thread)
So we are bored in the office today talking about fail fads. Fads that you look back now at and remember how much of a spectacular douche they made you look like by partaking in the fad. My choice of course is the "Big Johnson" t-shirt craze in the 90's. Name some others.

Oh damn I remember baby pacifiers in middle school. (Not into those either)
Dixie Outfitters. I laughed at that stuff despite I did redneck shit
The current fad I can't stand. Browning stickers on the back of vehicles despite they couldn't name one Browning firearm if they tried (Much less own one). Oh yeah the John Deere shit that every 14-25 year old city dweller girl wears . I work on John Deere dozers almost everyday and I don't wear that shit. I fucking hate working on a damn backhoe. It's hard ass work and sucks donkey balls for meth. Last thing I want to do is advertise I'm a broke ass monkey who smells like shit everytime I get home.
North Face. Unless you are hiking the North Face of Everest you don't need to spend $250+ on a jacket (Much less 3 of them). Spend $100 less and get Columbia then stitch North Face on it. And if you are really cold and just have to have a warm jacket. Buy a F'n Carhart and be done with it.
I still need to get a "Frankie Say Relax" t-shirt for the hell of it.

Yea those aren't "fads"....Fraggle Rock was a show on HBO that really didn't take off that well and certainly never had huge marketing success. Heavy Metal was a popular magazine (I got it:drool:) from which some of the stories were made into a movie. Lastly, the first incarnations of microwaves were certainly a "must have" item but as they are an important appliance in almost all households, they can hardly be labeled a "fad"....

So true. I can put you in contact w/ a couple of dealers in this area that you can play against one another, but the guys in Fayetteville have definately taken care of me and been a great help w/ the Hayabusa and working with my schedule.
PM your emmail and I'll get you the contact info. When's your first "long weekend" memorial day? That would be too long.....

fuck'n rollerblading...
Damn. I went rollerblading with my buddy's daughters last Saturday. They both got a new pair for Christmas and I went to the rink with them (They are practically my sisters and begged me to go so I had no choice).
We went in the afternoon and I have discovered an untapped resource of Milfs. And if you skate around and act like you don't give a damn they practicaly rape you on the rink. I have found....

Not in the hockey community Ebbs...
I can understand when you mean strapping on rollerblades at a rink and skating around in circles like NASCAR with copious ammounts of flat chested pre-teens to "I'm a Barbie girl".
But I train so hard on my pair in the off season, I go through a new set of wheels a month. Not a fad, but a means of conditioning hell...

why do you need a GSXR1000? a 600 will still put you over 120mph and 0-60 under 4sec...
does that make the GSXR1000 a bad idea?
shit look at the Gold wing... I'm sure it doesn't NEED a 2300cc V6... but it's so you can still get some performance even when it's loaded down.

So we are bored in the office today talking about fail fads. Fads that you look back now at and remember how much of a spectacular douche they made you look like by partaking in the fad. My choice of course is the "Big Johnson" t-shirt craze in the 90's. Name some others.I actually got a Big Johnson t-shirt for Christmas this year. :rockout:
It's almost acceptable. It was from my step-dad, whos last name is "Johnson". He has some of the shirts himself.

acid washed jeans
ripped jeans
pins on jeans (like safety pins going up the sides)
scrunchies (there are people who still wear these )
Those "Tommy Hilfiger" logo place shirts (eg. mexico, etc.).
I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any at the moment.
Some things start out as legitimate, within a certain social set, then broaden out to become a 'fad.' The safety pins thing was one of them, as part of the Punk movement in the late '70s.
Back in high school I had long hair and went around wearing an old Korean War bush jacket that I picked up in a surplus store, in downtown Toronto. I was poor and working to help support my family, while going to school. Bought the thing myself for something like $10.00. It made me the butt of jokes from the "cool kids." Two years later they were all wearing the same thing and I couldn't have replaced mine for less than $30.00.
You folks want a real fail? Pet Rock.
