This was a question on another forum.
Here is a poll/question for everyone. Name two guitarists, who basically anyone could name. Someone even non musical people would know. Say for instance, if you posted a picture of Santa Claus and asked, "who is this". 90% of the world would know.
Who would you pick?

Jimi Hendrix (who hasn't seen the pic of him kneeling over the burning guitar?)
The second would be a toss up between Slash and Eric Clapton.

"Stevie" Ray Vaughan (The only guitarist Eric Clapton 'looked up to')
Al Di Meola

Jimmy Page.
someone already got my other pics, was gonna say Hendrix, or Stevie Ray Vauhn, or Santana.

Elvis? Technically he played guitar.

Yeah I'd have to say Elvis and maybe Johnny Cash :idk:
No question when you think of guitars you think of Hendrix, that is a no brainer.
Other two that would definitely be on the list is Stevie Ray Vaughn and slow hand, Clapton is God.

the only problem with Clapton and Stevie Ray Von is if you posted a pic... would 90% know who they are? especially with Clapton before his son died and he calmed down.
Elvis guarentee 99% of america and over 50% of the world could identify him
Johnny Cash... Hendrix are probably the next two

Call me silly but I don't really consider Elvis or Johnny Cash guitar players. They could play guitar but that isn't really what they were known for, right? Does that make sense?
I thought this thread was about sound at first, but now that I know its about appearence I guess I would say Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. I think more people know who Prince is but I don't think a lot of non-music people realize he's a guitarist before he's a singer.
Maybe I'm just too much of a music person to participate in this.
If this were about sound I would have said Santana and Joe Satriani.

Oh, come on, non-music people don't even know who Ingve IceCream (Malmstien) is, much less what he looks like. Especially since he turned into such a fat boy. Or at least he was a last time I saw him play.
ETA: Ebbs, Angus wore the little English boy school shorts and jacket.

Hendrix is probably the most recognizable by photo of any guitarist. You could throw up Elvis who is probably the most recognizable artist of all times, but he wasn't much of a guitarist.

I've been a guitarist for 22 years. The first two people I thought of were Hendrix and Jimmy Page. But BB King is right there with them. Maybe even more so, he just wasnt one of the first two I thought of.
My personal favorite is Edward Van Halen. But If I showed a pic of him to most people 20 years older or younger then me they probably wont know who he is.

If you ask adults, most of them know Clapton and Hendrix. If you ask kids, they are going to say some fucking Jonas brother or some emo fag from panic at the disco. I don't think Elvis or Cash would be mentioned a whole bunch if you specifically said guitarist.

If they were raised right, they'd know who they are. I raised mine right. They know who the greats are.

You cant really answer this. There are so many great guitarists. I guess it just depends on the type of music you like. For me, the greats are:
Jimmy Hendrix
Tony Iommi
Jimmy Page
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Eddie Van Halen
Michael Angelo Batio
