Along the same lines as the guitarist thread. Who would you say are the two most recognizable people on the planet?
EXCLUDING World Leaders
Id say Mohammad Ali and Michael Jordan. Keep in mind I know nothing about Boxing or Basketball.

Even though he's a freak of nature, Michael Jackson is still probably the most recognizable person in the world. After that, even without much recognizability in the US, probably David Beckham.

Good one. He's up there, but I think Beckham's lame ass exposure through his fame whore plastic wife in the US bumps him over.
I dunno... Rossi and Michael Shumacher have world wide uber-celeb status
Shumacher yes, Rossi no
Pretty much anyone you would have to consider must be huge in China and India because of sheer population. Michael Jackson would easily take both. He is without a doubt probably the most recognizable person on the planet. Pele would be up there too, Beckham would be too, but more cause of India than China.

Osama bin Laden. It may be for all the wrong reasons, but find someone that doesn't recognize him. Maybe a grey area on the "world leader" exclusion.

Our problems aren't as big of news over there. outside of major cities. Plus the state controlled media isn't like the bombardment we get here. They know of him, but he isn't as recognizable as he is here.

No way would someone who doesn't know much about soccer (futball) even know who Pele is let alone recognize him.
Michael Jackson and Oprah get my vote.

Even when I didn't know wtf soccer was and lived in an area of the USA where soccer wasn't even played back in the day, I knew who Pele was.

Is Oprah really a recognizable name outside of western culture? I'm asking cuz I really don't know. I know she's a force her in the States and has some appeal to Europeans, but her topics seem to be aimed more at someone who lives in a commercial society. She seems like someone who would have limited recognition outside of western culture.

That's my point. Lots of people who know his name wouldn't know him to see.
Besides if we're going soccer I'd think Ronaldo or Ronaldinho (sp) would be more recognizable. Hell those teeth on Ronaldinho and that hair alone!
Oprah....I'm not sure on that one. She'd be recognizable in England and Europe that's for sure but probably some areas of the world not so much.
What about the Dalai Lama?

I was thinking the same thing about the athletes listed. Shaq? Jordan? Maybe to teenaged American kids. But, we're talking about the world here.
The pope is probably #1. Are we counting him as a world leader?

Basketball is unbelievably huge in China. So Shaq and Jordan would be known by them, but the rest of the world, probably not as much. Then you have to take in account China's population compared to the rest of the world.
The pope is a world leader.

Are you speaking from first-hand experience of the Chinese media? Because he isn't only a threat to the US, it's global. I'd be willing to bet they know him.

They were living not far outside of Hong Kong for awhile in some town I won't even attempt to spell. Now they live a little ways out of Beijing in another town I don't know how to spell. No, I lost my free flight privileges from Conoco before they moved there. Plus they pretty much tell us to stay here, it's not worth it. They hate it in China. They got use to living in Dubai and then Singapore and got use to being pampered and actually having competent medical doctors and clean food/water. They are always sick over there and pretty much just stick to imported food.
That reminds me, Tiger Woods is just about huge everywhere.

Recognizable by their face, or by their name alone? Most athletes, even Shaq or Tiger, could walk into a mall and not be recognized by half the people, but that wouldn't happen with someone like Michael Jackson or a President of the US.

I think there is sufficient evidence outside of the bible that shows he did exist, whether or not he is the son of god is debatable. However, no one in this part of the world would recognize him because all images of him show him as a white european, not a middle eastern jew.
