WTF is wrong with businesses and their lack of proof-reading! :wtf:

It's not *that* hard. Hell most spell check should catch some of the mistakes I see.

It seriously makes me not want to do business with places that can't even get their publications right!

If you only knew how little I actually comment on it though. I mean....a lot of it makes me cringe but I also know that not everyone has the same penchant for spelling. It doesn't come as easily to some people that's for sure....so on a personal level I try very hard not to let it bother me. I really do. :cf:

But on a professional level.....puhleeze!

I attended a seminar on the new generation gap where college admissions offices were indicating they get tons of applications in text speak.

I'm with you guys on the spelling and grammar. My husband is worse than me. In informal places I let it slide a little, but at work I try hard to be accurate. One girl used to send emails with, "please post in your area's". It would drive me and another girl nuts, but we never had the heart to correct her. She is gone now. Oh well.

My biggest pet peeve is when you use the wrong form - like there instead of their or they're, and it's or its.

After years of trying to battle against poor spelling and grammar on teh Interwebz, I believe the only thing that's changed is perhaps that my own spelling and grammar have become eroded. :idk:

Still, I totally agree about businesses. I find that I almost immediately lose a little confidence in a business that has one or more glaring typos, spelling mistakes, or poor wording on their web page.
If it's just in a product description which is one of hundreds of items that have to kept track of, I'm a bit more forgiving. But please, if you can't accurately word and format the basic information about your company, hire someone who can.

That's really not the problem. The problem is that they're accepting these applications and modifying classes to accept that brand of stupidity as the acceptable lexicon.

Yes, I know it's New Zealand. (http://media.www.cardinalpointsonline.com/media/storage/paper1064/news/2006/12/01/Life/textSpeak.Accepted.In.New.Zealand.Exams-2516460.shtml) It'll be here soon, if it's not here already.

I don't know if you remember this, but, years ago I had posted a thread on CF about how a guy I had gone on a couple of dates with didn't use proper English and how it made me crazy enough to question going further with him. This guy used to type "coo" instead of "cool" in IM's to me. I wanted to slap him.

He got offended when I explained to him that being well-spoken is important to me. So, we had sex one last time and we were done.

I'm more bothered by improper language used in advertising, than by the average person. Advertisers are supposed to be masters of the language and every time that I hear something like, "Save up to 50%, AND MORE!" I cringe.

Then how would you go about spelling words how they sound when there are a multitude of words that sound similar but have vastly different spellings and meanings? If you go with phonetic spelling, then you're making a decision that there's only one spelling for words that sound the same.

I'm with you. I've always been good with spelling, grammer and such, but after spending so much time on the netz with you guys and falling prey to the text phenom, I am much more lax.

However any publications and work items are ALWAYS in proper form!! It's so embarrassing to see what some of my fellow co-workers send out to my tenants without my prior approval. It makes us all look like fools in the porfessional world. And these people are college educated yet write like 6th graders!

My favorite is when I am hiring a new contractor and it looks like their 5 year old wrote the proposal. Thats confidence inspiring!

You should see some of the shit I get. My company is global, so every day I see poorly worded and badly translated quotes from a half dozen languages. Several of our regional sales managers are of Germanic background, and many of my projects are shipping to countries halfway around the world. So I might have an original quote written by the German owner's son, based on emails from a Swiss regional manager to a Thai representative in Korea. Or a intermediary's purchase order based on a quote from a Polish representative's emails with the Chinese parent company of a Turkish test facility. :panic:

I could make a killing proofing these papers. Even worse, the sales folder I work from often has several copies of the same quote with minute details revised, and some of the grammar/language errors corrected, and none of the corrections make it into the next revision!! And as a bonus, most of the engineering details I require are left unfinished, or completely omitted, or float in some bizarre aether or limbo.

:suprisebuttsects: Surprise Butt Sekts? :lmao:

My industry apparently hires a lot of engineers and developers who cannot speak understandable English even under extreme duress.

It seriously makes me not want to do business with places that can't even get their publications right!

I refuse to do business with an organization that has glaring spelling or grammar errors in its publications, advertisements, or website. If they can't get their own shit right, I definitely can't trust them with my money.
