The keyboard will eventually disappear, but it won't be something as stupid as that, it will be integrated into the screen or be some kind of light device like these:

The sad thing is even if Apple came out with that people would still line up for miles to get one.

I think they'll go with voice next... a few of the docs in my hospital use a program called Dragon Natural Speak. that documents what they're saying. pretty fuck'n cool. shits pretty quick too... our Radiologist lives by it.

voice would be impractical in the cube farm office environment favored by so many American companies.

It'd be cool but IMO there will always be the need for some kind of interface that isn't audible.

The laptop as we know it will become rare if not disappear. As smartphones progress they will replace the need for laptops.

The voice can drive you nuts. Years ago I was living with my wife (girlfriend at the time) and her parents. One morning her father woke me up yelling into his mic trying to train his voice program. :panic:

I certainly hope so. Even my little Lenovo X61 is a PIA to carry after sitting in an airport for 15+ hours.

I've used dragon, and while it can be great I'm not a fan. And I have no problem replacing laptops for smart phones, as long as the memory keeps up and formats become universal.

The only problem with replacing laptops with smart phones is smart phones can't do everything a laptop can.

I use my lap top 90% of the time to just access the internet while traveling... but like with my up coming trip down from AK.... I'll be using it to store and edit my photos I'll take along the way. no way in hell I'd be try'n to edit a photo on a fuck'n smart phone...

and try'n to wait until I get back to a desktop just means I, one, waste the down time I'll have on the trip, and two, will just get lazy as editing 200 is a bit less daunting than 2000... as I'm finding with my Indy photos... I just let them pile up and I've STILL not gone through and reviewed them all...

Smartphones will progess to that point to where they can tie into other devices to make them fully usable as a full blown comp. It will tie into TVs wirelessly or portable monitors with laser keyboards built into like above and some sort of wireless mouse. It's not like it's going to be tomorrow, but these devices will progress to where there will be no need for a laptop.

but like the case of editing photos... the screen size is the killer... no way I'd ever try editing a photo on a phone... shit I hate do'n it on my laptop as the 17" wide screen is on the small side

easy: fit the smart phone with a mini-LCD projector. :)

My crappy phone will link to a tv. Of course because it's a Kodak camera,it has all of the "Easy-Share" software to edit, etc and will link my photos to my Easy Share account, photo bucket, etc automatically if I want. I can link either WiFi,Bluetooth or it came with cords for either USB or RCA hook-up and they sell cords for S-Video or HDMI hook-up as well. With a number of the new tvs being set-up to surf the web through WiFi,I think that Trip is right and we'll be able to eliminate our laptops altogether soon. I almost forgot,I believe I read about a bluetooth dock that hooks up to a TV through HDMI. Also,I can already buy a LCD picture frame that I can send pictures from my phone and link up with wireless.
