I got food poisoning yesterday from the local "fast food" place's creme cheese that came with my bagel at lunch...had to be, since it's the only thing I ate. Got severe heartburn starting at 6:30 yeasterday, followed by severe cramping. Today I am running a fever (started around 4pm) and my blood pressure seems to have shot through the roof since 7:30pm. My face is beet red like a bad sunburn, but blotchy. Is this normal, or should I get my ass to the ER? Just askin...

I've had food poisoning before, and simply threw up and got over it by the next day...Never got "sick" with this...It's just really wierd... Blood pressure has been up for about an hour, but not as bad as when it first started.

It is one of those questions that if you have to ask... you are better off just going.

Sounds like an allergic reaction rather than poisoning

Go

Now.

That's a note from Mom... Go... NOW.

But MOOOOMMMMM!!! I'm not allergic to it, I eat it all the time...but I also don't want to go to the ER for something that might run it's course. Yeah, I know...but I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this happens with food-borne illness like poisoning. If I don't feel better shortly, I will be going to the hospital. Right now, I am drinking lots of fluids mommy. :D

Even if you have had the food before and were fine, you don't know whether or not there was some kind of cross contamination with something that you are allergic to... get your ass to the ER before we have to read about how you're being put in the hospital in serious condition because of anaphylactic shock... or worse.

You could take a couple Benadryl if you have them but tell the ER folks if you do.

Allegic reactions can be dangerous Angee.

There is no one kind of food poisoning...there are about 15 different types of bacteria, viruses and other nasties (not including food adulteration; when non-food poisons and chemicals get accidentally mixed in with foods). It may not be the food you ate today....many of the nastiest bacterias can take uo to 72 hrs to show symptoms. The blood pressure issue is the one to be concerned about...extraordinarily high blood pressure, with or without high fever can do permanent kidney damage. listen to your friends and go get checked out now...............................

yup. hospital NOW. no ifs, ands or buts, dads orders.

its best to just be sent home by them knowing whats wrong over staying home, and having to dial 911 because you didnt go earlier.

Either go now, or unlock your front door so EMS can get in without breaking the door.

I had a friend learn that the hard way.

Seriously, it's one of those questions that have an automatic answer of "yes". Kind of like "Should we call 9-1-1?"

that's not food poisoning, you vomit and shit a lot with food poisoning. Sounds more like allergy to me as well and you can be not allergic for most of your life and become allergic to certain things as time progresses, go to the hospital.

Angee, this could be serious.

I would stay home and drink Scotch with valium chasers, but you might want to check out this website before you make that decision.

I called Angee earlier & she said she was going to the ER. I got a text from her just a couple of minutes ago saying she was in ER and would update me as soon as she had news.

Its good she went. That didn't sound good. My crazy ass won't go unless I'm forced for the most part. If I say I want to go you know I'm worried.

One of the few times I was forced to go I was just going to go home and lay down. The nurse wasn't to impressed with that. She said I would have been in there a lot longer and hooked up to a few machines if I waited.

James, I'm the same way. I damn near have to be forced to go or have some major trauma...and even then if I'm conscious I still have to be talked into it.

I just got a text from Angee. She's having an allergic reaction. No other info yet (cause, etc.).

Another hard headed pup. Its going to come back and bite us in the ass someday.

See and people say its stupid to ask medical questions on a forum. If she didn't ask she might not have went. Thanks for the update.

I'm back (yeah, country ERs are quick). He said it could be a combination of things...mild reaction from what I ate yesterday, then reaction today from something that normally wouldn't bother me while my system was down, or couple any of the above with stress. He's not really sure what could have started the reaction, but the Benadryl seems to be taking some of the splotchiness down. I'm still red, but not nearly as bad as when this first happened. I didn't itch or anything, and that's something I DO normally do when stressed. He mentioned Niacin, but I haven't come into contact with anything I don't touch/consume on a regular basis. I guess the concensus is, noone knows why, but it manifests like an allergic reaction so we'll treat it like one. Ahh hell, I'm due for a complete physical anyway. Thanks for all your answers and especially for the concern. I just didn't want to go running off like some hypochonriac (sp?) to the ER and feel totally stupid afterwards...I like to save the ER for those who really need it. Thanks again y'all. :D

Thanks...while you guys were posting earlier, I grabbed a quick bath and headed to ER. Took longer than normal to get there, as it's 20 miles from here and it was snowing and the wind was gusting from the cold front blowing in...I figured stephanie would update y'all since she called while I was running said bath... I just LUUUUUUUV you, Rogue!

Ok, I'm going to bed now...gotta be at work at 9am...uggghhh!!!

I LUUUUUV you too, Angee! :D Same as a couple of others who called/texed me with "you have Angee's number, right? Call her & tell her to get her ass to the ER NOW!" I was on the phone with one & got a text from another. We all care or we wouldn't be telling you to go. I think your BP caused the most concern with us. I'm just glad to hear it wasn't something more serious. :)

This is what I miss by going to bed early. Glad its all ok. Some enterotoxins can casue some weird effects too. Scromboid gives you neurologic effect as well as the vomiting and diarrhea. I see tons of allergic reactions and so far weve only had to tube 2 to protect the airway. A lillte benadryl, pepcid and prednisone and babysit them for a few hrs.

If this happens again, start keeping a food diary to see if you can pin point what triggers it. I had to do that for a long time to figure out what I could and could not eat.

Already done. What's odd is I didn't touch anything out of the ordinary... the doc said it could be something that normally wouldn't be an issue when my body is working right. It may or may not be related to how sick I was Monday, or it could even be stress related. There's no way to tell. What had me a little concerned is that my sister has high blood pressure AT NIGHT. Her bp is fine most of the time during the day and spikes while she is asleep. High BP runs in the family, so I figure this is my warning to watch it. I feel o.k. today aside from being tired from staying up so late. I have a brand new box of Benadryl with me at work and will keep some at home as well as in my purse. Not knowing what set it off is what concerns me most. I've never been allergic to ANYTHING including poison ivy or oak. Friggin wierd...

Oh well...I'll just pay the copay and mark it down as "here's your sign" to watch my diet and pay closer attention to my health. :D You guys are awesome! Thanks again for all the concern...didn't mean to give anyone a coronary...

Not necessarily so. I had food poisoning and it made me woozy with blood pressure shooting up, throbbing headache and generally scared the shit out of me. I couldn't take a crap until the day after and it wasn't diarrhea but instead all stopped up. I called and talked to my doctor and she said that food poisoning symptoms are diverse and not just vomit and diarrhea like what most people think.

Nope...said to follow up with a doctor in 2-3 days...but I've only been insured for 2 weeks and haven't had time to find a regular doctor... Going to check one out right down the street from me soon. I need to get an overnight blood pressure reading done as well as a regular physical.

Dunno...by the time I got to the ER it had dropped to almost normal...no way to tell. It had been a few hours by the time I was seen so it was only 109/73 when it was taken. I know what it feels like from past times when it has gone up, and I don't usually turn red under the most strenuous circumstances. My normal BP is 90/60, and my core body temp is 97.8...yeah, I'm odd... I am going to be purchasing a BP cuff for home use in case this happens again. Damn, I'm getting old...

Ok, I gotta go home now...gotta stop by Walgreens too.
