Porkchop's thread and various other threads I've seen on the topic have me wondering about the X-Box 360. I was planning to get one when I had money, but it seems like everyone who owns one has had to contend with the Ring of Death. So I'm gathering data by the most scientific means possible: an internet forum poll.

They were very quick about it, no real bullshit or stalling. I think the process took all of 5 minutes. Took about a week and a half from the call to the arrival of the replacement.

Mine needed replacement on day 2. It's been a champ ever since, except for a weird random tick sound every now and then.

Sounds like it's in the hard drive area. It's not loud and not frequent and doesn't interfere with game play or playback of movies yet. If it's still an issue, I'll do a warranty thing on it with Sony before it expires and get it fixed/replaced, or possibly look into dropping a larger hard drive in there myself.

I haven't owned a 360 for exactly this reason, I have seen the ring and I didn't even buy one.

Got a friend who you can bug to borrow one from? Then spend a long weekend going at the game, or roll the dice and buy one and just enjoy the shit out of it.

Fuck buying used man. Hold out a little longer. There's rumblings that there's another price cut coming by the middle of this year for both the Xbox and the PS3. If anything, the newer ones may have a better chance of lasting a long while than the older ones that are reaching their break point.

Very good point. With the economy such a hit you can probably expect a price drop soon, especially when you add the fact that there isn't much of a shopping season any time soon and seller will be desperate.

Second day after GTA IV came out I got the RROD. I was pissed! Just recently I got another one due to a faulty power supply. XBOX still kicks ass.

dunno, theres zero profit margin on consoles. both of them lose hand over fist selling the things. they go much further and they might as well just start shipping it directly to your house with a little check attached

I got the RROD a couple of months ago. So I called Xbox... got a girl who sounded like she was from India. She pulls up my xbox serial number and tells me that my xbox has already been sent in for repair and I can not send it in again. The only time my xbox has been away from my house is when I brought it home from the store, or moved to a new house... I tell her this and she puts me on hold for what seems like an hour, but probably only amounted to 15 minutes... She tells me, when she gets back on the phone, that she has to do some research in order to process my repair request, this may take up to 7 business days. WHA? OK fine... whatever..I hang up with her and realize I never got her phone number...

She ended up calling me in 2 business days to inform me that everything was fine, and I was given the ok to send in my never-been-serviced xbox 360. She asks me how I would like to ship it, I can either ship it myself and they will email a shipping label to me, or I can wait for them to ship me a box to send my xbox in. I opt to send it myself, and she gets started on the email containing the shipping label. After 10 minutes of giving her information and 10 more minutes of spelling my last name, (I guess 5 letters is way too many) she informs me that I can call back with any questions, but the problem is she doesn't check her voice mail but every other day... WTF? ok.. no problem. How long is my xbox going to be out of my possession? She tells me, "It could be up to 3 weeks." 3 WEEKS? WHAT THE HELL? At least they gave me a month free to make up for it...
A day goes by, and I get pretty excited that I get to ship my xbox off and get repaired. Check my email, and there is no once foreign now common name (Susan) attached to @microsoft.com or xbox.com... so no shipping label. So... I email her stating this fact and giving her my correct email address.

2 more days go by and I finally get a return call, but I was unable to answer. Susan leaves me a message telling me that she is sending me a box. This will take 3 to 5 business days to arrive. WTF? I have already been at this now for almost a week... So I email her back (I still don't have a phone number for her) and let her know that I don't want to wait for a shipping box, just go ahead and send me the shipping label via email.

I get a return phone call again, 2 days later. It was Susan again. She said she could not cancel the shipping of the box because it was already processed... great..

3 days later I get the box. Follow the instructions, take the face plate off, remove the games and hdd...blah blah blah...send it in.

The next day another white box in the mail... another MS box for my xbox... (yah... she never sent me a shipping label, she sent a box... stupid bitch...) This box's shipping label is different than the 1st one I received. This one is to a repair center about 250 miles closer to my house. I mean, I could drive there in less than an hour, which is pretty close in Dallas. Oh well...

2 days later I get a phone call from the xbox repair saying my xbox has been repaired and is being shipped back to me!

It took the repair service 2 days to fix and return my xbox, but a week to get the shipping box. At least I got a month of Live out of it.

Mine has died twice now. I don't know anyone that hasn't had theirs fail at least once.

Newer models have a new lower power chipset that doesn't get as hot. They are less prone to failure.

And if it does Red Ring on me I'm buying a new one while i send this one in to Xbox. But So far mine has been a champ...But the Arcade is only 200 Dollars...How much cheaper do you need??? Slap your HD in from the old unit and BOOM...you have your xbox back.

On my first one. It's over 3 years old. Never had a single problem with it.

Btw, you're supposed to shut them off occasionally. If you're playing them 8 or 9 hours a day, no wonder they break.

Look for the "falcon" xbox if you want to avoid the RROD.

Because the Falcon model Xbox 360s have both the cooler (temperature) 65 nanometer chips as well as the extra heat sinks that were shoehorned into refurbished replacement consoles. In other words, a Falcon Xbox 360 is the most likely to remain RROD-free.

I don't have one, but quite a few of my friends do. My roommate has had to send in his elite 3 times in the last year and a half. He's not a hardcore gamer by any means. Maybe a game or 2 of madden a night. Most of my other friends have had to send it in at least once. Now my friend with the PS3 will play CoD4 for 12 hours straight with no porblems.

Why dont you guys just stick to the PS3. Mine is almost a year old and i watch blurays on it all the time so its ON a lot but i never had any issues with it. My friend who lives in the same apartment as me has gone through THREE xbox360s so far. Luckily they are pretty easygoing when it comes to repairs but what about when the warranty is up.

I'll avoid a console pissing match because I've got both and actively play both, but the one thing that Xbox has that stomps a mudhole in the PS3 is Xbox Live. I don't give a fuck if the PS3 Network is free and blah blah blah, Xbox Live is a seamless integration of online capability into all of the games. PSN is tacked on shit that mostly works, but couldn't hold a flaming pubic hair to the vastly superior Live setup. If PS3 had something that was actually comparable, their sales would jump dramatically.

Really, here's how I see it: it's less than 5 bucks a month. If 5 bucks a month is what it takes to maintain the service so that everything remains seamless, I can totally afford not going to McDonald's for one meal each month to cover that cost. And that's not even a true cost anymore. Any decent amount of searching will get you a 12 months plus another month card for under 40 bucks. If Sony wanted to charge $50/year to bring PSN up to XBox Live standards, I'd be more than happy to pay it, because PSN is barely acceptable. The only thing I like better about PSN over XBox Live is their store front, and I'd give up the fancy GUI for consistent, reliable, and seamless online integration in my games.

Does it have HDMI connections? My current one doesn't. I'd like to replace it with one of the Xbox's that has the HDMI, but I didn't know if the cheapy one has that or sticks with the Component Cables.

If you don't mind refurbished stuff, keep an eye on buy.com. I managed to get a fucking sweet deal on a 22" widescreen monitor with HDMI hookups. Sure, it's only 720p, but it also only cost 139 shipped. PS3 games and bluray movies look damn good on it. The Xbox looks good on it too, but I've got it hooked up through the VGA port instead of HDMI, so I think I'd like to see the difference between the two.

if you TV is 720p you wont see a difference....might be worse.......
since its native res. is 720p the 1080p will not work, nor will 1080i.

same think as trying to use 1080p on Component cables(1080i is the limit for me W/o HDMI cable) it just goes black....

The Arcade machines made in late 2008 (October-ish) have the new Jasper board with expanded on board memory to support the New Xbox Experiance. Supposedly there have been Pros found in the wild that have the Jasper board in them. That's the one with the 65nm CPU and GPU.

Most of the Pro and Elite 360's out right now, and most anything manufactured since August of 2007, has the Falcon board which uses a 90nm GPU and 65nm CPU. The GPU is the part that is the main issue causing the RROD, because it gets too hot and pulls away from the circuit board. Even though the Falcon board still uses a 90nm GPU, it is supposed to run cooler due to a new chip revision and a better heat sink.

There are still reports of occasional 360 Pro/Elites with the Zephyr board. These use a 90nm GPU and CPU, and were the first "fix" for the RROD. This is what the Elites released with that were said to be RROD proof... which turned out to be less than true.

The sure fire way to know what you've got is to check the 12v current rating on the back of the unit.

I've been waiting to buy one too, hoping that they would get the RROD under control. If I can find a 360 Pro with the Jasper board I may just break down and buy it.
