Fuck yeah!

Those F-22s are fucking badass^4. They make them here in Georgia and I saw them flying around one day. The F22 was chasing a F-16 and basically cut him off on the inside. Probably in the same manner Rossi would pass me in a turn. Ultimate ownage.

That's not an easy feat because the F-16 was designed as a dogfighter and be more agile than anything else (ability to cut inside the turns of every other aircraft of its day).

Oh, I know. I grew up with a father in the Air Force and knew everything there was to know about jets. The F-16 was the shit to me because I knew how well it could manuever. To watch the F22 (a jet I played on a video game from years past as the YF-22) own it like that was amazing to me.

I was on the USS Nimitz when this was taken. We were on sea trials off the coast of San Diego after we got out of dry dock(DSRA) in 1990.

check out the other cool videos in this link..That climb as soon as he takes off looks impossible. Looks like he just gets to the top of an invisible cliff and carries on at a leisurely strole.

It can almost hover and with those huge ailerons it can turn on a dime. Not that anything is gonna get close enough to dogfight one but wow! The F35 has some good capability too. 4 different versions of the 35 provide carrier service, VTOL, and various electronic/weapons packages.

I know the orders are in but I don't know if they have produced enough yet for a unit to be organized...

Skunkworks ftmfw!!!

Honestly I wonder what kind of shit is really out there. The F-117 had use in Vietnam but no one really thinks of those until the Persian-Gulf war in the early 90s. The fucking SR-71 I think had use before Vietnam but wasn't mentioned until much later on and still dominates in top speed (If they were still flying). So I assume there has to be some crazy shit out there.

As for anyone touching hte F-22. I'm not sure if Russia has made any progress past the Mig-25/29(can't recall off the top of my head) and maybe Iran has some fine Sopwith Camels that are slow enough to make a supersonic jet inaffective. But I wonder when is the last time we had a full blown bullets to bullets dog fight.

US fighters play chase with Ruskies occaisionally just like in TopGun but they don't ever get dogfight close. Just hide and seek with the radar. Last real Dogfights between modern fighters were Israeli/Arab affairs.

During the Gulf 1 and 2 we had a few radar kills but as for close in dogfighting not in a long time. Primarily our battlefield intelligence doesn't require eyes on to get a verifycation of a target. AWACS or Satellite has them IDed and then they get killed BVR (beyond visual range). Kinda takes the romance out of it huh?

history nazi in effect...

First flight of the F-117 was around 81. The POC for the tech used flew in 78.

Russia has made great strides in the Mig-29 and Su-27 platforms (spinning off models with different designation Su-32, Su-35, Mig--blah blah) and their big clients such as China and India have utilized tech relationships with other countries (Israel) to combine solid airframes with very good avionics suites.

Iran has mix of dated US French and Russian aircraft (70's early 80's) updated via homegrown solutions with input from Israel, China, Russia and Europe as well as packages from those countries.

Keep in mind that airframes are about the doctrine being applied. Not Airshow nonsense and spec sheets. An ancient airframe is deadly when used properly in the context of the doctrine applied.

Iran for example is not about achieving air superiority because their armed forces are not meant to project power. They are primarily concerned about defense and disruption type activities. Iran's pilots are some of the best low level fliers in the region and their entire philosophy revolves around flying 5 feet off the ground to get at an attacker supply lines.

Ethiopian Eritrean War,
1998 - 2000

At least one incident where an Ethiopian Su-27 shot down an Entrean Mig-29 using 30mm canon.
