To make life easier on the road, you gotta have the right tools, and you need to bring those tools along somehow, here is a list of some gear that i find useful while on the road, feel free to post your touring setup

and on the pig they dont get that hot even though they are closer then the 2 inch gap they suggest

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p8/drewpy636/2.jpg

also a mulit tool is nice to have in case the unexpected happens, like a long line of decoys flies out of the boat about five cars ahead of you and gets wrapped up in your rear tire and belt
http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_517082_imageset_01?$main-Large$

spiderwebs aka cargo nets are also very useful to have, i think we have atleast three per bike cause they are always in the way unless you need them and then they are no where to be found

I have the exact same Cortech saddle bags. They actually hold quite a lot of stuff. You can get a 12 pack of canned beer in each one.. Although I wouldn't recommend it just because of the weight.

I love my cortech tank bag but the tail bag failed catastrophically on me!! At 120+ the bungee came undone and lodged between my rear tire and my swing arm. By some miracle I didn't crash. But it tore off the can on one side and the bag was completely unusbale as were a good number of my clothes that were inside of it. (sorry - crappy pics on old cell phone)

that looks like a HUGE tailbag!

yeah that's what I was think'n... but it may be the route I'm headed... I'll need something to hold my 17" laptop... and I'm think'n when the tail bag (the one drewpy has) expands... only the side pockets get bigger... not the main compartment... :idk:

dReWpY
03-12-2008, 08:36 PM
the main compartment expands not just the side, and the tank bag works fine, the nice thing is its comfy to lay on

could you fit a 17" laptop in the tail bag you have? that's gonna be the deciding factor for me.

oh... and where did you get your tank bag again? I thought you said Iron Pony but it's not on their site

i have the magnetic tank and even without the safety clip on the front it withstood several 100+ bursts and one 127+ run so they stay on, i have a smaller one that was on the kawi when i punted it at deals gap, was still in place after the wreck

when it comes to saddle bags... they're mostly function over form... I say mostly because I'm not gonna mount some big giant aluminum ones on the side that would be 100x better than the sport bags I'm getting... but the point is to take the weight off the rider (no backpack) to reduce fatigue.

if you expect to put any decent miles on your bike while carring gear... you'll want saddle bags... unless your just gonna wear the same shit for 10 days... :idk:

I have high mount exhaust; the problem with most soft luggage is that it fouls high-mounts, and heat shield or no, you will have a failure if the luggage contacts the pipe for a prolonged period.

I found these: http://www.revpack.com/motorcycle/products/TourPack.html a couple of years ago: they are built great, they won't foul your pipe, they stay on without shifting, and they don't leak in anything but the worst extended downpours (for which I have the waterproof covers.

Highly Recommend.

My sport bags do not touch my carbon fiber pipe but it sit about 4 inches above it and the exhaust has blackened the underside of the saddlebag, and it has made the material very hard and it is no longer flexible like the other side.

Ok with going on the indy trip this fall, I am going to need some sort of luggage, and I figure I may as well get quite a bit of storage, instead of just what I will need for the 3 day trip. I would really like to do a fair bit of touring within the next couple of years. I am looking at the Nelson Rigg CL-800 rear tote tail bag and CL-1000 saddle bags. (Linked at bottom of post) Has anybody else tried out the nelson rigg and what do you think of it? Also, what do you guys think for a tank bag? Should I go with a bigger one or a smaller one? Bigger would be able to hold more, but I don't know if it will feel like too much in front of me while I am trying to go down the highway.

question on this, I have been looking over all these as well, but found another set, by Dowco...

I found a few decent reviews, 1 unhappy dude...but cant find much else on them, and the price is better than on the others...which if your strapped for cash (like me right now) the price looks way better than nelson rigg or cortech...what ya'll think?

oh yeah, if you strap it right, a poncho over a back pack or tail bag works just fine in pouring rain for several hours...strapped on with cargo nets, but getting in and out is a pain...

I have this setup. I find the tail bag to be too small for clothes packing. Two pairs of folded jeans and its almost full. I the cram my socks to the side of the jeans, then undies on top of jeans. I put my shirts and what ever else stuff in the saddle bags.

I turn the saddle bags around. Seem to get less drag and winding fight with them that way.

the tail bag is small by itself to pack clothes in... but the tri-bag system is big enough for just about any trip you'd wanna take on a sport bike.

the only thing I dislike about them was the rain fly isn't permanently attached... and trying to secure it isn't confidence inspiring

Then don't ride in the rain.

haven't done a lot of touring rides huh?

sometimes it just happens. ;)

I have an older Joe Rocket tailbag with a rain cover that has elastic on the bottom which keeps it from flying off. I've used it in all manner of weather (rain, sleet, snow) and it has yet to get water in it.

I have a Nelson Rigg tank bag that I just put on last year but haven't taken any large trips with. Also comes with a rain cover which has survived commuting to work in the rain with no issues.

I've discovered that on long rides, backpacks tend to tire me out because of extra drag and because it traps heat
