My child will know discipline. Some offenses are not spanking offenses, I never spank angry, but there has to be an ultimate deterent. Anyone who has tried reasoning with a child will understand that, like an adult, anything can and will be justified. You must have consequences to reinforce the desired behavior.

Don't stress. 2 pops on the back of the diaper should show fits aren't acceptable. Really with kids that young you don't have to hurt them to prove a point. My kid (4 in March) takes a swat as a humiliating gesture to his supreme authority and hates it even if it doesn't even leave a red mark...

The parents who don't spank and their kids turn out to be arses....well usually there are OTHER reasons their kids are such asshats. It does NOT boil down to whether they were spanked or not.

Oh and I'm not a parent nor do I support it. I'm a teacher and I've seen all of the spectrum. I have to enforce my rules without spanking. :whistle:

But when I was growing up I didn't fear my teacher. I feared my Fathers reactions when he found out I was goofing off in school. So indirectly, kids getting spanked works as an attitude director in the classroom.

while I prefer to provide a consequence directly related to the offense, spanking when used as punishment IS effective. Not striking your child out of anger, not lashing out at them in frustration - that's not what I'm talking about. I have spanked my children and as lately as last night, I told my 15 year old if she wasn't asleep by a certain time, I WOULD spank her. And I was dead serious. As young children, it was sometimes the only consequence that meant something to them. They UNDERSTOOD what a spanking was. A time out? Hell, that was a reward, not a consequence depending on the action. Do they need taken away from a situation? Then a time out make sense.

My kids are well behaved and NOT abused.

I have a 2 boys, an 8 month old and a 4 year old.
The 4 year old is very well behaved, uses his manners, has never thrown a temper tantrum and is a good kid. On those occasions when he does get "fresh", all it takes is a few words from Mommy or Daddy.

I have never laid a hand on him.

While I am not against spanking, I feel that many parents are both too quick to spank and do it at too early an age. I think parents who spank children under the age of 2 are wrong to do so at that stage in a childs development. Between 2 and 3 can be iffy but overall I think there are much better methods at setting up an enviroment where the "command structure" within the home is laid out.
