How important is to have a current tetanus shot?
Can you just opt not to get one, until you actually need one?

My kid has to have one this year. NY is making all the kids his age (14) get them, but not just tetanus...he has to have pertussis too. He aint a happy camper.

My parents were talking about this the other day. My father said you don't have to get it until you need it, but it's better to be prepared.

Why?
Honestly I hate needles and haven't had one since I was a kid. Any time I go to the doctor's office, they tell me I am due. If it's okay to wait until you need it, I rather wait.
I guess I want to know the pro's and con's of getting vs not getting one until you need it. :idk:

10 years is how long the antibodies last for. You can wait untill you get a bad cut or need surgery to get one or can get it at your next check up. So olong as youre not allergic the only real con to getting one is your arm may be sore for a day or so.
In 6 plus years of emergency medicine I havent met anyone who liked needles in the first place ;) its realy not that bad.

I get cut on metal often enough that I get one every 5 years. I figure I'll need it eventually and I don't like going to the doctor just for a shot when I cut a finger.

I don't recommend dancing on rusty nails without one.

Couldn't tell ya how long they last. Uncle Sams makes sure I'm up to date on everything and anything. I know I've gotten at least 3 since I joined 9 years ago.
I'm pretty sure at the end of the world, it will be military members, cockroaches, and twinkies left.

Good point, but surprisingly where we are there are vew current heroin addicts, I see some recovering ones and a bunch on methadone. We see more crack heads and big time pot heads since its a caribean neighborhood.

I can never remember when I got my last one... so I think I'll get one at my 30th b-day time frame. Then its easy to remember when I got one..
Does it matter if you get one earlier?

Mine's current but I travel enough that I usually am up to date on vaccinations, etc.

I don't mind shots, but tetanus shots lock my friggin arm up for 3 days and hurt like a sunofamutherfugginbitch! I don't get one unless I step on a rusty nail since I got out of the military. I don't have a problem scrubbing a cut or wound with soap and I've never gotten an infection or anything else from one and I've had plenty in my time.
But that's just the way I am. Feel free to keep current if you want :D

NO. Pretty sure you could get one every year if you wanted.
Like I said, I've had at least 3 in the last 9 years in the Military, and I know I had at least 2 between birth and me joining the military.
so that's at least 5 in 27 years...

I have to stay current on all shots because of my job. Everytime I get cut or scrape they give me a new tetanus :panic: I think I should be covered for the rest of my life!!!!!

I stay pretty current on shots, at least, my commander makes me. I have the every ten years shot, but if I get hurt they make me get another one, so you can have more. Better safe than sorry.

its no biggie if you get it before the 10 years are up.

I had mine a couple years ago, just because. I don't remember it hurting that badly, but I donate blood nearly every 56 days...needles don't bother me.
The hep shot hurts worse. I had to get that since I'm a First Responder at work.

Hep hurts.
Smallpox hurts, and is a pain to get.
The anthrax series... now that's a bitch. Each successive shot hurts just a lilttle bit more, and longer. :panic:

all I know is I'm up to date... though I need a TB test when I get to Mississippi... as TB is still rampant in Korea...
to be honest... I don't mind needles... they've never bugged me. even giving blood doesn't bug me... i know it's weird... but I always liked watch'n the needle go into my skin  :idk:
