Nowadays here in florida you cant even get a motorcycle registered without a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license which is a good thing in my opinion and everyone has to take a mandatory MSF class THANK GOD :rockwoot:
But in the past i have heard of people riding for YEARS without getting a motorcycle license. But previously the cops would let you walk with just a ticket if you didnt have an endorsement compared to now when you go to jail and the bike gets impounded. So my question to you guys is did you do it in the past? If so why? And for how long did you ride without a motorcycle license and what made you finally get one?

a year. I didn't have any license, and a motorcycle was more indescript than a cage.
It was winter before I got my license back, so I just took the permit test, then the MSF course right away in the spring to get my license.

Back in the 90's, as long as you had a MC permit and a drivers license the local cops in my county wouldn't get on your case to much as long as you weren't riding like an asshole.

One day.
Years ago, my dirt bike riding buddy who also had a whole garage full of street bikes asked if I'd go explore some back roads with him and told me I could borrow one of his bikes. I never really had any ambition to ride on the street (dirt was enough for me), but I went anyway.
That was my one and only ride on the street without a license. I got my license the day I bought my first street legal bike.

They didn't have a motorcycle endorsement when I started riding, at least not where I lived at the time.
Finally got one in '84, because it saved me $$$ on insurance.

11 years without a MC endorsement. After 2 warnings i finally got one. I got my first speeding ticket abut 6 months later:idk: I held a roadracing club license for about 10 yers though...
I think I was about 2 months. I bought the bike, amd went to get my permit that day, but I had to wait 2 months to take the road test. I wound up just tooling around on the bike, and the few times I got pulled over right off the bat I just told the police that I couldnt keep up with the liscensed rider I was with, and he left me and I was just trying to make my way home

I wanted to take the MSF course and it they don't start till around May or so. Thats a lot of missed riding so I took it the year before I planned on buying so I could ride the first nice or close to nice day. I didn't have the money so it wasn't till the year after that (about 1.5 years after the course) I bought my brand new R6.
I was able to ride here and there before I bought my bike because people would let me take a ride on theirs.

About 6 months, I think. During those 6 months I was "practice riding" around where I lived. I lived out in the country and there was rarely any cops. When I started riding the bike to work (because my car died and the bike became my transporation), I went and got endorsed after the first time riding to work.

German driving/riding laws are much stricter than the US laws. If you get caught driving w/o a license for the type of vecicle you are on, you loose your license for at least 6 month and are blocked to obtain a license for 1-3 years, some "time" is possible too.... plus a shitload of money.
That said, I got my motorcyle license and car license before I picked up my bike.
EDIT: if you get caught driving while suspended you are really in deep dudu

Now it depends on what you are calling illegal.
I got my lerners permit before i ever turned a friends motorcycle on. But that being said, I dont have my full liscence yet. I will get it this spring.
Talking illegalities.... Ohio's law is no highway or night riding on your learner's permit. Yes i have ridden at night without my full liscence, but never on the highway.

Couple rides around my hood with no license. But got my permit the next day. Then got my full endorsement a week later.
3 days after my learners I got pulled over at 10pm with no tag. I had insurance but all you could see was a faded "Progressive" from my printer dying. The only reason I was out past night is I was at a bike night and it dumped rain for about an hour or two. Being a new rider I didn't want to ride in rain. So I waited for the streets to dry up some and the rain to stop which was around 10pm.
The cop said he understood when I explained the rain. He commented on him not being able to read the insurance and was cool with the tag since I had a bill of sale. He said to me before I left "You need to do two things. Go somewhere and print out the insurance so I can read it. And get your ass home it's past dark". I said thanks and went on my way with no tickets or anything.

well, which is easier to believe, somebody shows up and says i can ride vs i can ride and have a valid M-DL
w/ the influx of noobs to the sport and trackdays attracting all types, make sense to me. a license is no guarantee, but it's better then somebody's word that they 'can ride'.

It means another PROFESSIONAL organization has already vetted this person on having the basic knowledge of riding a motorcycle. It also means I don't have to limit my organization by age - I can allow children if they already have a race license.
It makes it a simple answer if people don't have any of the above. It is no longer a personal judgment call.
About 1.5 months. I was riding before I even took the MSF course. A couple tickets forced me to be legal quicker. I needed to get my "M" before i took the tickets to court.

I got a lic when I turned 17 and kept it until I moved to FL in Jan of 83'. At that time FL didn't have an M-endorsement, a license was anything under a big truck. Then when I moved to TN, they wouldn't put the motorcycle on my TN license because the FL license didn't say it was for bikes. I was going to have to start over with written tests and riding test etc..
It pissed me off and I told them to kiss my ass. I didn't have a bike at the time anyway. Later after I got another bike I rode for about 6 months before I went and took the tests and got the moto endorsement. I showed up for my road test on a GS700ES Suzuki wearing full leather. I got space alien looks at the DMV, but WTF. The tester gave me some mild shit when I was asked how I got the bike there (Rode it! without a license..) Then afterwords wanted to know how long I had been riding, because I was really good at it (17 years at the time) and wanted to know why I was just now getting a license. When I started explaining the process she just waved her hand around and said "administrative crap" and we both laughed and shook our heads. Then we went back inside and I got a license with an M.
I did have a pretty good discussion with some guys while waiting in line about wearing gear. They were like "man, I ain't wearing all dat shit when I ride" I explained that it didn't matter what you were riding before you left the (Bike, moped, scooter, Hog, insert your ride here), once you leave it, your ass is owned by the pavement and pain hurts. One of them actually got a look in his eyes that told me he got it. So maybe I helped someone.

Same here... I went about 5 years on my '80 suzuki GS850 before I had the endorsement. You would just take the written test and you would get a permit, and as long as you were riding with someone who was endorsed, then you were all good. I always rode with friends who were, so I was never in too much of a hurry. Hardest part was actually getting in to one of the sessions for the road test.
