Not at all. It'll be easy to forget because he's got nothing to offer. Like every Olympic thing, there's someone that the public latches on to. They get their Wheaties, their who gives a fucks, their bottles of nobody cares, and for about a year after they get their little talk show rounds. Then we (Americans at least, not sure about Canadians) get tired of seeing them paraded around and stop giving a shit. They fade back into obscurity and balance is restored. The only difference is if they're hot or fucked up. If they can't be sexually exploited or made into a movie of the week drama, then enjoy your 15 minutes and fuck off until next time. And even then the public moves on. This time it's Michael Phelps. Next Olympic games it'll be some underaged female gymnist. The Women's soccer team from a few years ago was supposed to ignite a massive soccer movement. Now people remember one of them took of their shirt and was in a sports bra. Keri Strugg fucked up her foot and got a medal. Until I mentioned her name, when was the last time anyone gave half a shit about her or even remembered she existed? The shelf life for Olympic fame can be measured in microseconds.

Mr Lefty

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it wasn't for the fact that not 4 months ago he was preach'n how he wanted to be a roll model. how he considered himself a great one.

now your view of pot aside... it's not socially acceptable for the vast majority of the US... especially to the age of kids who are looking at Michael as a roll model.
for that... he's an Idiot.

he's lost his Kellog endorcement... a few others I think too... I think it should die now...

dude made a mistake by acting his age. not saying everyone his age does pot.. but he made the same choice as alot of people at his age... he shouldn't be chastized for that.

unfortunatly ESPN has turned into a sports version of CNN and Fox News mixed into one... they run things into the ground... dig up dirt on stories no one really cares about... just to keep them in the spotlight.

they need to go back to news only 3 or 4 times a day... and sports 2 times.

I remember a lot of them. And he will be talked about every time the Olympics come around. Even the winter Olympics. Not everyone will remember her name but a lot of people have not forgot what Brandi Chastain did. You see it on tv and movies. People will haul off their shirt after a goal.

Keri Strug? I remember her as well as Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson, The Dream Team, Hockey. In boxing a fighters Olympic medal is talked about for a long long time.

Mark Tewksbury is a Canadian Olympic swimmer from 1992 and he is still getting jobs from it.

In a lot of sports the money is made from you name and what you do with it. Not playing the sport. They sport gets your name out there. Those endorsment would have let him comepete in swimming till he was ready to leave while living very well. He fucked that up. Unless he doesn't care about making a living in that way.

When a company writes that big check they are buying a image. He had a great one to sell until he made that stupid mistake.

I think that's ridiculouws. How many professional athletes have we known who have done the same thing and are still considered legends, heroes, and role models. Just because he was an Olympic athlete and not being paid to swim professionally he should be held to a different standard? Bullshit. It's not like he's Barry Bonds or Mark McGuire, this wasn't performance enhancing and wasn't during training. Hell, we let Lance Armstrong off the hook for suspicion of blood doping, which is a lot more serious than a picture of a bong hit. This is people wanting to pick on the kid for nothing other than a quick headline, which is all he was to the punters anyway. Let the kid go, and why pull his endorsements? Odds are most of those executives went home from the bullshit meetings deciding to fuck Micheal Phelps and fired up themselves. He should sue for breach of contract.

That's the thing though. It's all fleeting. It'll be brought up in context of the Olympics, but that's about all. In less than a year, he'll fade. Hell, he won 8 medals in the Athens Olympics in 2004, but he wasn't even the focus on that. There was more focus on Ian Thorpe. Even among American swimmers, he was second to the female swimmers, particularly Amanda Beard, and her fame was only briefly extended due to a Maxim spread with other female Olympians and a Playboy photo shoot. Michael Johnson was Mr. American Wonderboy a few years before for breaking some sprinting world records, but he was forgotten within a year. Dave Johnson and Dan O'Brien were on a fuck ton of McDonalds commercials and other sponsorships before their Olympics, but one flamed out and one underperformed.

Olympic performers are fads. They're good for about a year of adoration and then they're gone. They don't catch touchdowns, they don't hit homeruns, they don't drive the lane for a dunk, and they aren't in the spotlight enough for us to give a shit once the Olympics are done.

And I don't care if Phelps smokes a pound of reefer a day. Good on him if that's what gets him off. But this public hard on over the story is just the typical nonsense of building up our heroes and jerking off in ecstasy when they fuck up and get caught.

A lot of the guys your talking about made a name for themself before they fucked up. Michael Jordan was picked on for his gambling which I thought was stupid.

Phelps is just starting out really so everything matters.

And why pull his endorsements? "Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg," said a rep for the company in a statement. Like I said its all about image and he just damaged that.

And isn't he 23-24? He isn't a kid anymore. Time to grow up. If you want to do stupid shit then don't do it around people. And NEVER around someone with a fucking camera. And if they try to take a picture of you doing something stupid take him out back then tell everyone how he fell down the stairs and broke his jaw.

I still remember all those names you put out there. And you proved my point. A swimmer isn't out there as much. Most don't watch regular swimming events. So it is even MORE important to keep you shit clean. If he gets the good ads and keeps himself out there. There was talk of him being worth $100 million over his life time. They said he made $5 million last year. So I hope he didn't blow it. With the right contracts right now he wouldn't have to worry about being in the lime light past 2-5 years. He would have enough money to live well. Make some change speaking and just enjoy life. He could be seen on tv sitting front row at big sporting events just living the life.

Stupid? Maybe.

But then again, these ARE people that are in the public eye, and are expected to be the role models and people to look up to. They dont have to be perfect, but at least smart enough to not get caught. I feel the same about politicians and other public figures. Is it gonna happen? Your preaching to the choir. I have said that. People who live in the public eye and want to make money off, need to know that every little thing they do matters. Some people are petty and just want to see them fail. And doing something against the law is really stupid. But other then the law breaking, people need to realize that this are just regular people.

Maybe he will always be remembered this way. Kids coming up could be told to not "Phelps" this opportunity that they have. Or they could say you might not be as lucky as Phelps so don't fuck it up. We will have to see.

Another possible stupid one had ads pulled. Chris Brown is all over the new. They think he hit his girlfriend Rihanna.

Stupid comes in all colors.

And on a side note, rihanna is extremely hot.

Its not a matter of tough guy.

Its simplicity.

To everybody.

The pussification of the united states has gotten so saturated that people have lost track of what matters.

if you don't understand it you're probably part of it.

DEAL WITH IT!

Ok,I'm about to make you re-think your position.... I AGREE WITH YOU!

What's the deal with sports figures having to be so fucking lily-white and perfect. It's funny but it's like the singer vs entertainer argument on the other thread. Michael Phellps' ONLY responsibility was to swim super fucking fast, that's it. It's all a package deal now baby! You have to swim fast, look good and never be naughty or you're OUT! I've heard that he's suspended from competition as well. Nice! That may have been the only bad thing that dork has ever done, heck we elected a fucking PRESIDENT who did the same thing, what kind of role model was he?!?!?

And on a side note, rihanna is extremely hot.

Shit I'd like to hit that as well!

It has been a whole package for a long time. He didn't have to take the whole package. He could just win and move on and say screw the deals. But like someone pointed out, he wants to be a role model so he does have to watch what he does to do that. It was his choice. There are many athletes that don't care and do what they want. Most of them don't get the big endorsement deals but they do get a big ass pay which they seem to be fine with.

NBA = for-profit business, it's the team owner's investment, so as long as tickets keep selling he couldn't care less

Olympics barely scrapes by, on whatever donations & sponsorships they can get

I haven't followed the NBA a whole lot since the strike. When they stopped playing I lost something to bet on till Football started up again so I'm still kinda pissed at them. lol But which guys are causing trouble and still getting the big endorsements? Even in the NFL for the most part anyone I think of that is making endorsement money is keeping their shit together.

he's the one that said he wanted to be a roll model.

Well he is a "ROLL" model. How to ROLL a doobie. Maybe not a ROLE model.

Sorry, I'm not being a grammar/spelling nazi but thought it was ironic and funny (to me atleast)

I wouldn't care if he shot up heroin and steroids before, during, and after his olympic performance. If he wins he wins if not oh well. But he has to know that shit like that will get out. It'd be one thing if a pic got out of him tagging one of those gymnist or track chicks. But smoking a doobie is pretty damn retarded if you have millions of dollars on the line.

Ok we're talking about E N D O R S E M E N T S not ticket sales... They took his endorsements because he smoked pot.

Oh and if you think that the Olympics are "barely scrapping by..."

I'm not talking about less then perfect. There is no "perfect". For example. Jordan. He had the gambling and I think they talked about him cheating on his wife from what I remember. Thats mild compared to what some guys get into. Vick for example.

I dunno about the Olympics themselves.... but Gold Medalists (most are still amateur athletes) make their money in endorsements... they don't scrape by... but all their money is made on their marketability... hopefully dude doesn't loose all of them.... he doesn't deserve that...

So your saying if you have a company and want to pay someone one around $50 million to do this for you, that you have no problem with anything thing they do?

James

I'm saying there shouldn't be a $50 mill ad campaign. Further, its only since the invention of camera phones, internet, and poparatzi that this shit became an issue. Do you think back in the day that "role models" didn't have issues? FUCK yeah there were problems!!

There was always problems. But can you do what ever you want at your job? When you are a face for a company you are really working for them. Some people do this for multiple companies at a time. So they do have to watch what they do.

As far as role model goes. I think kids should look closer to home and not the big screen.

And why shouldn't there be a $50 million campaign? They decide on a budget and what they want to do. If they want to pay an athelte they sit down and decide what they think they are worth and then see if they can afford it. So if they decide they want to spend that much then they believe they can get a return on that money. And thats why it matters what a person does. It can affect their company.

I know I would jump at most $50 million job offers. And for that amount of money I think I could at least try to stay out of trouble. At least till I was finish earning that money.

I think the big difference between Olympic athletes and other professional athletes is that Olympic athletes only get a chance to redeem themselves once every four years where as an NBA player has a full, annual season in which to make people forget about his mistakes.

When Kobe had his incident with the girl in Utah he lost a lot of endorsements and his jersey sales fell off. But now, a few years later hes one of probably the top 2 players in the league and he has the number one jersey in the league in sales.
