View Full Version : Need tips
So today I went for my MRI on my back, well lets just say things didn't go according to my plan. This was my first ever MRI and I didn't know what to expect. He put me in the first time and when it got up to my face I started freaking out a bit. He took me out and gave me a blindfold and we got started...1st sequence no prob...2nd, I tried to take a deep breathe and my chest hit the top of the machine and I started to flip out again and had to stop. The tech said I could try some xanax or valium to try and mellow me out...is there anyone out there who's had one and had the same reaction that I did that can give me advice.
oh and yes it was an open MRI
TIA
and please no comments from the peanut gallery, i'm getting enough from my sister

We do sometimes prescribe som evalium or soemthing for an MRI. I had my knee done a long time ago and while it was a bit confined I just listened tomusic while it did its thing.

Um... if you were closer I could put the glock to your temple and tell you if you freak out I'll shoot you...
Oh wait... its metal... um... first I'll show you the glock... put it to your temple, blind fold you, switch it out for a plastic toy gun... still threaten you with it... and if you peep up... shoot you with nothing but air till the machine turns off... yeah... yeah... that's the ticket.
Honestly I have nothing... never had an mri

Cover yourself in baby oil, and pretend you're inside a giant, electro-magnetic vagina.
That's what I do.
Alternatively, you could try humming David Bowie's "Major Tom", but you should skip the part that goes "The circuit's dead, there's something wrong" cause that could freak you right the fuck out.

Can't help much, I fell asleep both times I had mine done. Once in an open one, the other in the tube.
Smoke a bowl before hand or have them get some a few xanax bars. That should knock you right out.

I just kept my eyes closed when they did my shoulder. It was a tight fit though.

I know how you're feeling based on the MRI I had two years ago, it wasn't fun.
Take the meds they prescribe and I just kept thinking to myself, it might be tight, but it's not that hard to get out. I kept my eyes focused on the largest part of the room, or close your eyes and visualize open spaces. It sounds stupid, but it wasn't as uncomfortable.
Good luck because I never want to be in that tube again.

No advice here either.
Add me to the group of people who fall asleep during MRIs.

You know the specialists need the info from the MRI to help you. It's in your best interest to get thru it.
Perhaps earplugs would help. :idk:
I'm claustrophobic but the MRI's I've had didn't bother me because I knew they were in my best interest.
Good luck

Well, maybe try conditioning yourself for the ordeal by staying in a confined space for greater amounts of time. You know, face your fear and take away it's power over you! I used to be afraid of alot of shit before I went into the Army. You can do anything with the right mental attitude! Good Luck!

Nope, I was suggesting xanax for curbhawk. I took nothing. I fall asleep anywhere....including the tattoo chair.

i dunno what happened. I've never been afraid of tight spaces. hell i've forgotten how many times when i was kid i got shoved into a trunk of a car after a hard night of drinking. it never bothered me. what really freaked me out was when i went to take a deep breath i just wasn't able to because i just didn't have the room to expand my lungs.

Hmmm...well all you can do is try to relax and control your breathing, maybe a bj in the parking lot before you go in? Always relaxes me! Perhaps a light sedative might be in order if you have anxiety issues...an MRI time slot costs HUGE MONEY and they don't have time for bs (no offense). I'd imagine that you aren't getting this done for fun,so you're gonna have to try and control your natural tendencies and get through this for your sake and the people who are worried about you sake as well.
