I think this was asked once before, but I'm not sure....

How many of you have or have had friends find employment by submitting applications and/or resumes online?

Just curious to see if I'm wasting my time as in the past, I've always went out searching, instead of sitting at home, banging away on the computer looking for jobs.

It seems that it's becoming more popular to apply online. Even our local La Work Force now has everything online, even filing for unemployment. I remember when you used to have to go to the local office and fill out paper after paper.....

I've even set up taking the civil service exam for a few jobs online. Printed out my paperwork to take to the testing site and everything. Since I've attempted this before, I must say, doing all of this online was ALOT better than the old way.

Looking in the local newspaper for a job here is even easier online. Seems like most of them direct you to careerbuilders, especially if you view them online.

Although I like the idea of sitting at home putting in resumes and saving my gas instead of running all over the damn place, I'm really curious as to if it works or not.

So far I've set myself up on careerbuilder, La's civil service, La's Work Force, and have been looking on usajobs (surprisingly, they have openings that I'm qualified and over qualified for). Keep in mind I'm not just going this route. I have a few places I'm planning to hit up this week including a reputable employment agency as well as some hospitals, Riverwood (or whatever the hell it's called now). Next week I'll lower my standards and put in apps for minimum wage jobs. Anything is better than nothing until something better comes along. ;)

Also, if anyone has any other places to suggest to look online, I'll take those too.

Depends on the company. The bigger the company, the more likely that applying online is the ONLY way of applying, and walking in to introduce yourself isn't going to help. Everything is controlled by the stupid-ass HR department. However, small companies are the opposite.

Thanks for the links, Angee! Now I'll never get anything done today.

I've been sitting here all day working on my resume and getting a good bit amount of apps in.

More for me to go through! YAY! :rockwoot:

I found one of my jobs on Craigslist... granted, it's pretty rare to find a decent one on there, but it's free to look.

There's also CPOL, look that up too, Rogue if you're wanting to go GS.

Given the fact you're female, you've got a chance.

Me? yeah, it'd be tough as hell for me to get a gub-mint job.

But anyways, to answer your first stated post.... I've found most of my jobs online. In fact the last.... 4? Yeah.... You can only apply online, then your resume is vetted, then if your profile fits their requirements (typically a salary requirement or more than likely whether you have a degree or not requirement) the drop you an email or give you a phone call.... Typically a phone call.

Hope that helps lady!

This site? http://www.cpol.army.mil/

The last four have been from applying online? The more professional jobs I've had have always been because I either knew someone on the inside or got a referral from someone who knew someone that had pull on the inside, kinda like my ex FIL referred me for my last job.

Yes ma'am that's the site.

Yes, last four from online.

Last two absolutely cold turkey w/ no one inside. Two before that i "kinda" had a leg up, just more of a referal than someone actually pulling and saying "hire this mofo."

What do you do professionally, might I ask?

Security industry, as in security and fire systems, both required and non required fire (although I admit I don't know much too much about required fire and codes...alot to keep up with!). I started out as an attic rat for my ex FIL and worked my way into the office. My mechanical skills suck so I'm slow but I know basic wiring and can wire up most any panel, even better if I have the damn book (not all systems are created equal). I know programming (mainly software based...I know a little doing it from a keypad) and can read codes. I've done pretty much everything from having product knowledge (selling, although I'm more of sales assistant), data entry (err..inputting customer information in as well as gathering info and data entry for monitoring), cleaning old data and keeping monitored accounts current with information to ensure proper procedures and protocol, research (both for appropriate devices for the systems as well as signal & monitoring issues), troubleshooting (both as an installer and as an operator), scheduling appointments for installs and service, kept up with inventory, billing (only accounts receivable, I've done very little accounts payable), help keep up with local laws, codes, and ordinances, made sure my installers were up to date on their license. I worked with my ex FIL for almost 8 years and was more or less his assistant in everthing. My last job, working at the central station is the flip side of the coin and I was there a little over a year. The only thing I didn't know there was how to program the receivers and I was trying to get the owners to teach me that. I'm a SAI/UL licensed operator which allows me to work in any central station in the US (not to be confused with monitoring centers...there's a difference...central stations have more protocols and liabilities and can monitor UL accounts). There's not much about this industry I don't know the basics.

That being said, the industry has given me alot of skills and knowledge I can put to use in another career as well.

While looking into the online thing (which has never worked for me), don't forget to check with your friends and other contacts (which I've had the best luck with).

I'm doing that too. My housemate works at Chase and suggested I put my app in online. Did that Saturday. She's trying to get me an interview set up now, although she said it may take awhile. They're rather slow there.

Okay, so now we have your history... where do you want to go today? Gosh, damn Microsoft.... that was such a catchy slogan though.

Would be more than happy to give your resume a once over. PM coming w/ info.

**UPDATE**

I got a call from the most reputable employment agencies & have an interview with them Friday. :D They are known for good job placements plus they offer immediate benefits (insurance) as soon as they place you.

There's a catch though....this is the same agency that does job placement for the job that shitcanned me. This may be a test to see what kind of referral my previous employer

I also got a call from another recruiter but I missed it, damnit.
