View Full Version : I missed one job and got two instead!

Well a couple of days ago I got a call from the lodge in Talkeetna, Alaska where I worked last summer and I was told because of the 1 ticket on my driving record I could not work on their bell staff. Apparently a 18+ ticket worth 2 points in GA is worth 6 in Alaska.
So suddenly I was worried that my plans to move to Alaska were done for when I got another call only minutes later from another manager at the same hotel. She was my next in line boss last year and when she saw that I wasn't going to be able to work on the Bell Staff (ridiculous money believe it or not), she wanted to know if I would be willing to work at the front desk with her again.
Long story short: I now have a job as night audit from April to September when the lodge closes down for the winter. Four 10 hour shifts from 10pm to 8 am.
I then called a local breakfast restauraunt I worked at last year and told her I was available to work mornings and she gave me three 8-4 shifts.
Both places open up in April and both managers know that I will also be working for the other business and thus the 3 of us are going to work together so my schedule pans out and I can still have time to rest.
Basically I am fucking stoked. I have been sitting around feeling useless and now I know what I am doing in life again! Its only good till September but I should be busy enough to get some good cash flow under my belt before it ends and then I can hope to find winter work in Alaska.
12.00 an hour for night audit and 7.15 an hour as a server plus tips.
I am so excited to have a purpose again. You have no idea how bad I am looking forward to busting my ass and making some serious cash. 50-65 hour work weeks help me sleep well, so thats another bonus.

Yeah, at first being unemployed was nice. I was able to catch up on lots of things but that soon faded and I fell into mass boredom and poverty.
I look forward to being busy, even though 3 months from now I will miss the laying around the house uselessly.

Yeah I will have just enough time to shower and then catch some shut eye. The best part is that I will be so busy I won't ever have enough time to wander into 1 of the 3 bars and get annihilated. Having the two pay checks plus tips in my pocket will make the couple of sleep deprived nights worth it.
I really got make up for the couple of months I haven't been working.

I hear ya there. But it will get old. You will find that not having any time to just sit and do nothing... or to ride... will start to suck.
Granted, being a night auditor is really not that stressful or consuming of a job.

Yeah if I can get my ideal schedule would be like this, ignoring the actual days of the week.
I hope to get at least a 2 day weekend and if it worked out that way it would be cool since I would be done at 4 on Friday and not have to return to work until 10pm Monday night.
Starting Monday night

Yeah I know. I have been in Atlanta for like 13 years. I love this city but I would like to get out and live other places. I know I will come back though.
I loved Alaska and I sort of look forward to all of the crazy challenges that winter will throw at me. I also can't snowboard in Atlanta so I could actually put some serious mileage on my snowboard if I ended up working at the winter resort up there.:rockwoot:
This economic state is going to be a nasty one and I can only hope I get to look back and remember the awesome times I had while the rest of the world struggles to meet their commitments.
The thought of working for 12$/hour scares me. But im glad your employed and feeling better man!

Please take lots of pics and post them here often. I love seeing AK and hope to visit there one day. One of my uncles lived there for almost 30 years working for Alascom Telecommunications and absolutely loved it. He is now moved back home and going nuts not having anything to do but spend the money that he made. :D I heard that he made close to like $50 per hour..........Dayyyyyyyyyuuuuuuuuummmm!

Min wage and tip wages are different. They don't figure regular minimum wages for wait staff as they have supplemental income from their tips. ;)

ya, well, here, waitresses still get tips, and have to be paid at least minimum wage by law ;)

My high school friend will also be meeting me up there this summer and we figure we will find somewhere exciting to live for the winter and maybe start saving up to travel the world. Between the two of us we have English, Spanish and French down fluently so we should be able to get around anywhere.
We had thought about trying to hitch hike around the world for 10k a piece. :D

Assumations because of stuff he prolly read. That's just like anytime I mention living in La, people ask me about New Orleans and I don't have their answers, then flip out when they find out I haven't been there since I was 7 or 8. Or they try to make jokes about hurricanes, flooding, and swamps. There's none of that here either. :idk:
I live in NORTH Louzyanna, which is completely different than the south...almost like two different states.

uh, my cousin used to live in Chocowitiny or however it's spelled, right next to where you live. And the whole area got flooded about 9-10 years ago. As for swamps, eastern NC is fricking full of them. And bugs love swamps.

Choco is about 50 miles from me but I guess if somewhere floods once every 20 years it deserves a reputation for flooding...
Psst...don't tell anyone but Michigan is surrounded by water and is filled with lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, creeks that flood every year when the snow melts...in fact Grand Rapids (my old town) has one of the largest rivers in the country flowing through it. Oh and Michigan had some of the country's worst cases of West Nile disease a few years ago (carried by mosquitoes),as far as swamps go,there's nothing but farmland around here that I've seen. Of course,I haven't gone looking for swamps so.....:idk:

Dude I'm just playing......I'm from Michigan too, and I still prefer it over NC. I lived in Greensboro and what a bore that was. Now, Asheville would have been better, but maybe next time around.

It does in the sense that I am paid 2-3 dollars more per hour than anyone on the day time front desk except for maybe a supervisor. The other day time positions were paid 9-10 dollars an hour.
Last year I got to know the night auditor pretty well and I assumed he was paid a bit more because he was actually an accountant, nope even silly people like me get this "raise".
Not that I want you to get any more displeased with your old job, but even Walmart paid me 1.00 dollar more per hour to switch to night shift. :dthumb:

I know. I've done the overnight Wal-Mart gig quite a few years ago. I've actually thought about them. The pay was nice on overnights, even then, and the work isn't hard there. Not exactly what I'm looking for but I can't be picky right now.

Yeah I applied at the one nearby and didn't get a call from them. The work is ridiculously easy and if you don't mind some of the attitudes (could be said for any job though), it will at least help you pay the bills. Gotta do what ya gotta do.

About the only thing I hated doing was facing the frozen foods. I have respect for people who can make those little bitty pizza boxes stand on end in a uniformed row without knocking them over.
I mainly helped do stocking, which was just fine with me, even though I was a cashier. At least it allowed me to work on my own without a supervisor standing over me.

Cashiering at nightshift was boring as hell. I helped stock a couple time just because it made time go by much faster. I enjoyed it though, I was surrounded by a bunch of old ladies who all thought of me as a son/grandkid. Always feeing me things they brought from home, it was like working with 10 grandmothers. :dthumb:

There is a chance I could make that ride. I was suppose to be house sitting this week but I may run up to Illinois to visit my dad and try to speed things up with the loan he was going to co-sign for me. That would then mean that I wouldn't have any pending plans in march other than finding a truck and bringing it home.
