I'm guessing FD = Fire Department?
If you call the Fire Department because you're locked out of the house I sure hope they show up with lights and sirens on so a big crowd shows up. Then while everyone is gathering to see what the trouble is, they realize why they've been called there and whoop your ass for wasting their time.
Break in or call a Locksmith.

I would see if I could break in without breaking anything. Then I would call my family because a few of them have keys to my house. Then I would call a locksmith. If I had to get in the house right now for some reason and the locksmith was going to take too long I would break in.
I wouldn't call the FD because it wouldn't have crossed my mind.

I was locked out of my garage so I smashed the lock on my garage door. But it dropped the wires which are attached to the locks. Thats what I didn't want it to do. So I I had a destroyed handle and no way to unlock it. So I broke in using the door. I still need to fix that damn garage door. Its on my to do list.

LOL
This happened to me last spring. It was when i was about to move back to columbus. I had my dad's SUV for more packing space..... but left my appt key on MY keyring with my dad..... doh! And one day my roommate left for work and locked the doors.
My bedroom window didnt lock quite right, but it was way up on the second floor. So I grabbed a bench off of my neighbors back patio.... shimmied up and balanced on the wooden fence that separated our patio's and used spiderman fingers to slide the window and push it open. Then i stood the bench on its end against the siding and stepped off onto the bench and dove into the window.
For those of you who havnt met me.... i'm 6'1 about 295. It must have been rediculous to see a big dude standing one foot on a 7 foot fence and the other on an upturned bench.... jumping thru a second story window....

I'd fake my own death.
Once my next of kin showed up with a locksmith to claim my possessions, I'd yell "surprise!" and enjoy my opened-for-free door.
I'm also in the "would never cross my mind to call the fire department for something other than putting out fires" group :idk: Call me narrow-minded. I wouldn't call a locksmith to put out a fire, either.
Most likely, if it were just the stupid lock on the knob, I'd shim it with a credit card or (preferably) a pair of screwdrivers.

Here in Atlanta people are known to call 911 saying they are having a heart attack. To ride in an ambulance to our local basket case bum loving hospital (Grady Memorial) and then jump out of the ambulance and bail.
As for your situation. Don't waste the fire departments time. You made a mistake and it happens. Man/Woman up and bust a window.
I'd also keep a spare key in some far off goofball location for the future.

I'd never think to call. Perhaps because I am an emergency worker and wouldn't even fathom calling the FD for something that wasn't an emergency. Advertised or not, it would never cross my mind.
I've called a lock smith before when my dead bolt wouldn't open and had to be drilled out.
I've pulled over a 300 lb picnic table over to our car port and scrambled over a burning Texas "ruff" to jimmy open a second story window.
My father would kick my ass if I didn't first break in or call someone qualified. :)

Break in like a man. Once you break into your own house, you have a renewed perspective of how easily someone else can get in.
I locked myself out of my Mom's house within the first two weeks of being home in October. I walked outside to get the mail in nothing more then my basketball shorts and bam, I was stuck outside with no phone, keys, shoes, shirt, or wallet to identify myself. And to make things worse I sort of assumed none of her neighbors knew I was her son.
I noticed the kitchen window was loose and so I wiggled it while standing on the gas meter next to the house. Right when I thought I had unlocked it, the window fell in and shattered on the kitchen counter. I jump in and fall head first into the sink full of glass and then roll over into the rest of the glass on the floor. Believe it or not the only scratches I got was from where my feet went up and hit the top of window when I fell in.
I then called my mom at work to let her know that I had just WTFPWNED her window and I couldn't figure out why my she wasn't mad until she pointed out the fact that she already had a replacement window sitting the basement.
By the time Mom got home she had a new window and several less fragile things in the kitchen. (The window and my body broke a ton of her decorations)

Ed, there is a simple solution to locking yourself out of your house.
It's called a key. They're these little metal things with ridges that open locks.
Quite handy. They have holes on one end that fit onto a thing called a "Key Ring". This is a ring that you can keep your keys on, so they don't get lost in your Murse.
The thing you have to remember about keys, is that they work best when you have them on the OUTSIDE of the lock. Having them on the inside of the lock, defeats the whole purpose of keys, and thus, should be avoided, and pretty fucking obvious.

I never leave my house without some non-electric means to get back in (i.e. a key, not a garage door opener that doesn't work in a power outage).
If I was in a hurry, I'd break in. If I had time to waste, I'd call a locksmith. The damage I'd have to do to break in would far exceed the price of a locksmith. Calling emergency services for something that trivial never even crossed my mind.
My mom called the FD to come change the batteries in her smoke detectors, because she was too damn lazy to do it herself and I wasn't willing to make the 50 mile round-trip to her house to do it for her. That was just stupid.

Until this thread, if you asked me to make a list of everyone I would call in I was locked out it wouldn't have the Fire Department on it. I know they can get in a place but I can beat down a door myself.
The only way I would call the FD is if I was locked out an some how a fire started. Even then I would break in to get my kids out before the fire department even had the truck started.

I keep my keys on me at all times, unless I'm naked, in which case I don't go outside much. I also make sure anyplace I live has at least one door that locks from the outside with a deadbolt, so I can't be locked out. My neighbor has a key to my house as well, so in extreme circumstances he could let me in. Or I'd break in, but I wouldn't waste emergency services' time to get me into my house because I was a dumbass. Since there's no "I'm not enough of a fucktard to lock myself out" option, I'm boycotting this vote.

Thats a cool tool but I would rather not have my lock picked then to have the door jam pushed apart. Less chance for damage IMO by picking the lock. If the dead bolt gets locked it has to pushed pretty far to get past the bolt.

I know you think your tax dollars justify everything you do. You paid them so they must do this for you right? Well your tax dollars also pay for schools. Do you go in and sit in on the classes (I'm suggesting grammar here if you're going to do it)? NO!
Not everything you pay for means you get to use it. I know it's a concept you won't understand but I feel it needs to be said.
Did you ever think that when a truck came to your "emergency" they wouldn't come in full gear? Now stop to think that if an emergency did happen, their response time to THAT emergency could be significantly longer by having to go back to get their gear OR another station having to come to their emergency.

I have broke into my own (and lesser abled friends) homes too many times. I am actually getting good at it. Windows are the usual, garage doors are usually easy too if you get the door up to access them. Attic vents are a last resort although they lead straight into the crawl space. Doggy doors are so easy they dont even count.
I have only broken one door knob and only one window in several successful attempts.
Cars are a bit tougher. I have the tools but there are so many variations. Usually a cat hanger to the electric door lock on older models, slim jim to the door on most newer ones.

Ed you are without a doubt one of the most fucked up, self-centered, self-justifying people I have ever come across.
This is not a compliment.
Seriously dude.....what the fuck is wrong with you? :wtf:
It's not just the stuff that he pays taxes toward. Remember two words: audio cables.

I've stayed out of this thread on purpose. I know Ed. I like Ed. I've met him, Deidra, and April. They've stayed at my house before.
As I see it, the point here is that the Fire/Police/Ambulance calls are strictly for emergency use, and any other uses should be charged for?
It seems the City of Shawnee, Oklahoma has a few people that might agree with you. An item was brought before the City to start charging to "recover fees from motor vehicle accidents for services that are outside the scope of basic crime prevention, investigation and fire protection."
This I would have a problem with. What are they saying? If your accident isn't serious enough, if you aren't injured, that you should be charged a fee for those services assisting you?
Surely anybody in police, fire, or EMS would agree that their salary pays for them to respond to these sorts of calls among other things.
The problem I have with it is "Where does it stop?"

I've seen people up here get nailed for fees from Fire Services because they weren't residents of the area. A guy who hit me on his M/C, taking us both out, was charged $100.00/hr per truck, two trucks responding, for 2 hours. It was a bit of a shock to him when he received that bill for $400.00, I can tell you. That seemed a bit.... wrong. We were both injured and the bikes were unrideable.

IMO any accident should be covered. But I don't see a problem with charging for a non emergency call.

Trucks get charged all the time in the States for various "accidents".
At some point people need to take responsibility for their actions. I just can't imagine ever even thinking to call the fire department (even after someone might've suggested it). Just because someone suggested it does not absolve you of any responsibility for taking a different course of action. :sorry:

Get off your fuckin' high horse.
I came home after working 4 12 hour shifts at 18 weeks pregnant where we were short staffed by at least 2 aids and 3 nurses each day. Freakin' exhausted. I was pissed. I tried to get in, but couldn't so I told him to handle it while I went to the neighbors. He did.
The firemen were very nice, thank god they're not all like DragonPaco or whatever the fuck your self rightous son of a bitch's name is because otherwise we'd all be in for a world of hurt when we citizens have a call for help.

Nothing in this thread is whining. But your husband comes on here bitching about everyone and everything. He's the first person to jump down people's throats about shit from his fucked up perspective and his horse is the highest of them all.
Do you know why people jump back at him.....because he deserves it and he does it to them. Most people's goading of Ed has nothing more to do with the fact that for YEARS he has been the self-righteous one.
No one said anything about you in this thread other than good natured joking about you taking care of it and not him. As a nurse you'd think you'd know what it's like when your services aren't used in the manner in which they're intended.

Interesting thread....
I think the poll speaks to the common thought among the peeps.
This service is not offered/advertised here. The Emerg services FD/EHS are called for non-emergent calls, and they have to attend to some degree. But what a waste of man/woman power. I work with Fire Fighters and paramedics. The stories are abundant. They will break in to prove a point and walk away and leave people with the bill. And rightly so.
You'd have a hard time finding any front line worker agreeing with the idea of calling the FD to unlock your door. It goes against our principles. I'd rather pay - prior to being a nurse, or emerg nurse, than call the FD to unlock my door (advertised or not). I'd be totally ashamed.
I'd be totally ashamed b/c I wasn't raised to think it was appropriate to call the FD to unlock my knob lock. Especially since I was taught many a time how to unlock/destroy a lock - thanks to my father, his credit card, back pocket comb, butter knife, screw driver, silver wrapper from gum.... etc....
You know, I've stayed out of most all of this because, well mainly because Ed says shit on here and something the shit he says is out of line and he deserves some goading.

you mean the big I am taking my ball and going home threads. I know some are sincere if thye ar emoving on with their lives or gettin gout of motorcycling and that sort of stuff. i think there were a few from SBN who made the big I am leaving post then stuck around for 2 or 3 months.

Yeah because they like to see if people e-love them.
If you made real friends then you would talk to them off the forums and it wouldn't be a big deal. The people telling everyone they are taking their ball home are more or less informing people of one less ball in the play pen than a lack of person to play with.

How about this?....my teenager keeps and eye on his brother for about an hour and a half on the whole 2 days there's noone here when they get out of school. He takes his house keys with him every day just in case we have to go somewhere on the days we're here. I usually check with him to make sure he has them, but after asking him about them one morning he forgot to grab them. I got a call that evening with Rob giggling saying Chris had to climb on the roof to get into the house...he didn't want me to be mad at him (for climbing on the roof moreso than leaving his keys home) so he asked Rob not to tell me. To mess with him, when I got home I just told him his nickname was monkey-butt when he was little for a reason....deer in the headlights! He was stumped...i just laughed. Point is, he did it on his own. Yeah, they could have went to the neighbor's house, but he figured out a way to get in without bothering anyone, and he's a teenager...and there IS a FD just 5 houses down, but I would NEVER waste resources on that. Once those guys are on a call, if an emergency comes up, hey are stuck there. Someone could die while they are unlocking a house. No contest on that poll...call a locksmith definitely wins hands down unless breaking in is an option.

I'd call my Mom to come let me in... she is ½ mile away and had a key or two! If not, then I'd find another way in. All be damned if a break a window... we just got them in January (after having just single pane crappy ones for the last 3 years).

I made a sort big exit off of CF when I left, telling Stewie to fuck off. But, before I did that, I also made sure I had my friends' numbers, or other ways to stay in contact with them, and linked them HERE before I made my grand exit. There are still a couple who haven't decided to be apart of TWF, but that's fine. They weren't big into the forums anyway and I have other ways of talking with them. :)
And for the record, I haven't been to CF sine then...not to talk. I've been back to snag some of my pictures since my old computer crashed. But I haven't read any recent threads or participated in anything there. And I still have several pictures I need to snag but just haven't felt like doing it. :idk:

The cf thing is a little different since there was a mass exodus, but i agree on keeping in touch with friends even if i were to leave. I still see guys who no longer ride on the forums since their friends are there.

True. I was kinda of comparing my "grand" exit with what others do. I don't leave one place without telling people how I really feel. Wait...I typically tell it like it is anyway.
Either way, I still manage to keep up with my friends in one form or another. :)

I think jewlz was one who had a quiet departure. Said she was leaving, kinda gave her reasons and went on her way, but that was more due to what was going on in her life as opposed to getting upset with people in the forum or a change in power.
I was surprised Z kinda kept quiet a slong as she did, being her husband got dumped on quite a bit ( alot of it deserving I may add) and I think ed liked to push peoples buttons at the same time knowing some of this stuff would turn into a real shit storm of debate.

Me too, although she said she knew he deserved alot of what he got. I think he likes to push people's buttons too. Just like what he did recently. He started a thread about what happened and when everyone stated they would have done something else BUT use the fire dept he decided to make THIS thread/poll about it even after everyone had said they would have done something else.....like he was adding more fuel to the fire. I'm not quite sure why she stepped in the middle of this one and saying what she did seeing he was keeping the whole debate going with the new thread, although I'm sure after seeing him get blasted for shit for years it's finally gotten to her. :idk:
I didn't even think the FD would do anything like open locked doors in a non-emegerncy situation. Maybe if a small child had been locked inside I could see doing it. It's not exactly an emergency but if it was going to take a locksmith a long time to get there as opposed the FD getting there quicker....there's lots of stuff a small child can get into and potentially hurt themselves....maybe then I would have considered it after exhausting other routes (like a locksmith taking a really long time getting there or not being able to break into my own house, which I've always been able to do) if I would have known about it. Regardless if I'm paying taxes or not (when I was buying my own place) for emergency services, I've never used the service unless I've had to....in an emergency. I'm pretty sure that since the FD appeared not to be busy, they thought nothing of it, but what kind of fiasco could have happened if they would have gotten a real emergency call? I can't speak for Ed and Z, but if it were me, I would have felt really bad knowing that my non-emergency could have hindered a real emergency if they would have gotten the call.
I used to fuss at my mom for using EMS to take her to the hospital when she started having problems breathing, especially after she would lay there for hours having problems, then not bothering to wake my aunt up (if it was in the middle of the night) to take her because she didn't want to bother her. But she could bother others for the same service my aunt could have done...take her to ER. She wasn't getting seen any quicker. Her argument was they'd check her out and put her on O2 quicker on the way. The hospital is 10 minutes away from her. Add the time it takes them to get to her then back to the ED....it would have been quicker for her to get my aunt to take her and she still could have been checked out just as quick because she was a regular at the ED. Then add the extra fees for ambulatory services that Medicare paid for on top of it. To me, it never made any sense, but I could never get her to understand that. The last year she was alive, everytime she went to the ED, she went by ambulance...and she went at least once every other month.
Even as part of the first responders I had situations that were non emergencies come through and people would get pissed because I either had to place them on hold or couldn't help them because I was handling things that were emergencies. I've learned that alot of people define their needing "help" as an "emergency".....95% of the time, it's not a true emergency. But try telling them that....

Seemed kels comments kinda triggered the whole shitstorm too, I actualy though tit was goin got escalate since some people were on one side or the other but it kinda died down which is good.
For your moms situation, the problem with driving them to the hospital is if something happens en route you cant do much and its tougher for the ambulance ot find you as opposed to an address. we had that debate at the job site this week.
I see the complainers in the ER too, some think that because they got a ride in the red and white taxi they need to be seen right away and get mad when thats not the case.
Now I wish these guys would get this crane set up so i can go home:idk:

True. You let one person speak their mind and not put fluff around the edges and someone's va-jay-jay gets hurts, thus deeming the other person a bitch or an asshole for speaking their minds....these people are usually the ones that bitch about being in a nanny state. It's ok for them to want to speak their minds but let another do it that collides with them.... "I'm going to take my ball and play somewhere else because you're a bitch/cunt/asshole/dick and don't see things MY WAY!!!!"
My mom's condition was always the same and it was mainly due to anxiety and she knew this. She'd get upset, have problems breathing, which would upset her even more, eventually escalating the issue to an eventual taxi ride to the hospital after HOURS of fighting it. After the first couple of rides, it became routine. All because she'd get upset and couldn't calm herself down. If it would have been because of any other possible medical conditions, by all means go and GO NOW...not wait hours into the process because she didn't want to go. She'd always call me upset and crying, "I'm having problems breathing and I can't get it under control...I don't want to go to ED." I'd always ask her if she had any other problems, like her heart beating faster, any pain or tingling, how was her blood pressure and blood sugar then end with, "you know you're upset. Try to calm yourself down or get my aunt (who lived with her) to take you to the ED." "But I don't want to go/I don't want to bother her." Grrr.... "Mama, do you want me to come get you?" "No, I don't want to bother you either." Arrggghh!!! Then why the fuck did you call???? (of course, I didn't say this) I'd stay on the phone with her trying to think of things or say something that would be relaxing or help calm her down. A few hours later my aunt would call me telling me she called EMS to take her...again. Old people get stuck in their way of doing things/thinking and I guess us younger folk don't understand. God I hope I don't get that mindset when I get old.
Crane? I guess you get to stick around in case it falls on someone. Lucky you. How much longer do you think they'll be?

There was a few statements that were made over there. I'm surprised you didn't see any. Either a mod would actually say something about keeping it civil or just lock the thread. It didn't happen much but I remember a few...

For the record I don't think Z and Ed have left at all. I don't think that's what they meant (referring to Z's comment) about taking their ball and going home. I think she was just trying to put a humorous spin on her comments. :idk:
People are allowed to disagree right? I never thought that either of them were storming off the forum so to speak. Z doesn't post all that much anyways so it isn't really out of character for her to not post again for a bit.
