DENVER – A good Samaritan who helped push three people out of the path of a pickup truck before being struck and injured has gotten a strange reward for his good deed: A jaywalking ticket.

Family members said 58-year-old bus driver Jim Moffett and another man were helping two elderly women cross a busy Denver street in a snowstorm when he was hit Friday night.

Moffett suffered bleeding in the brain, broken bones, a dislocated shoulder and a possible ruptured spleen. He was in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

The Colorado State Patrol issued the citation. Trooper Ryan Sullivan said that despite Moffett's intentions, jaywalking contributed to the accident.

Moffett had been driving his bus when the two women got off. In the interest of safety, he got out and, together with another passenger, helped the ladies cross.

Moffett's stepson, Ken McDonald, said the driver of the pickup plowed into his stepfather, but not before Moffett pushed the two women out of the way.

When he awoke in intensive care, he learned of the ticket. "His reaction was dazed and confused. I was a little angry," said McDonald.

The other man also was cited for jaywalking, while the pickup driver was cited with careless driving that led to injury. Sullivan said the two elderly women haven't been cited but the investigation is ongoing.

The J-walking caused the accident.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that.

Jay walking seems to be just something to charge. Probably should put the two old women who can't manage to cross a street to death for being old.

The J-walking caused the accident.

I have a doubt. The bus was stopped. It was a snow storm. If Colorado drivers are anything like Louisiana drivers, the pickup driver probably wasn't allowing for pedestrian right-of-way.

The article, of course, is not detailed enough to make the determination. But the trooper presumably wasn't there, either. I would think the man's stay in the hospital would amount to time served for a jaywalking sentence. It seems like anyone who put any sort of critical thought into the matter would decide that, coupled with life threatening injuries, would be punishment enough.

Somebody at the Colorado State Patrol could have decided not to be a douche.

If there was no stop sign or cross-walk the pedestrians did not have the right of way.

It would not be up to the the driver to yield but to the pedestrians not to get hit.

That could also be the reason for the ticket; to show fault. Can you imagine if the driver of the truck got sued for simply driving down the street?

I'm sorry that this guy ended up in the hospital but if he had the old ladies cross where they were supposed to, the article never would have been written. :idk:

I don't know what the laws are in Colorado. I was taught that the pedestrian always has the right-of-way. But you're right, the ticket could have been meant to assign legal fault.

Or if bus passengers in Colorado are anything like bus passengers in Toronto, they stepped out from behind the blind side of the bus and into an active traffic lane.

Shit, I'd let the ticket slide in his case. I j walk all the time, but I also make sure my ass won't become road kill. Give the women that wanted to cross there the damn ticket for not looking both ways.

Whenever someone says j walk I always picture little india back in Jersey. I never wanted to peg so many people in my life while driving down that street.. I'm sure there's a few others here that share my anger.
