View Full Version : BEHOLD! Another V-Twin Major Rebuild... I give you... Project Pegasus...

I started in on my bike today... As you may or may not know I crashed my bike back in September. I never fixed it really, just replaced the parts necessary to make it go and kept on riding it. It's currently not really registered anywhere making it immediate impound bait if I ever get pulled over. With the Cali trip coming up, I had to get my ass in gear to get this thing rolling.

Pegasus - (Greek: Πήγασος, Pégasos, 'strong') was a winged horse that was the son of Poseidon, in his role as horse-god, and the Gorgon Medusa. Also synonymous with Buell Motorcycles.

One of the first things I wanted to do was paint the fairing mount thingy... It's goldish whatever and I think it would look killer the same color as the frame... You can see it here in this old ass pic:

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IM000157.jpg

Taking it off was easy enough, until I got to the ignition key thingy... Of course it take special torx bits with a hole in the middle... So I busted out the drill and drilled those bitches down...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0086.jpg
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0090.jpg

Off!

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0091.jpg

Next thing was to remove the bars... The throttle side was really easy, but the clutch side not so much... They used the worlds strongest glue on that shit and it took me, no lie, like 20 minutes to get the fucking grip off... As you can see, there's a bunch of rubber left stuck on there from where I dug a screwdriver up in there (and through the grip and into my hand of course!)

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0092.jpg

Bars off!

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0093.jpg

So, you might think I pissed myself a little right here, but that's not the case at all. I did like 200 miles on Christmas day and got caught in a torrential downpour... Sure enough, there was water STILL in my bars!

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0094.jpg

Next thing was to remove the frame pucks... After fucking with the grip for so long I was not real enthused about tackling this one... It started coming off real easy, then RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP! The fucking thing fell apart in my hand... I started to peal more off and the styrofoam kept breaking off, so I figured this was a job for another day (when I have more patience)...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0095.jpg
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0096.jpg

From there I wanted to pull the muffler off so I can send it to Special-Ops (a dude who hacks Buell pipes)... The chin fairing came off real easy... and I recognized that I was missing a couple mounting screws... I've heard of these falling out on their own before...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0097.jpg

Muffler removal was next on the list... man what a pain in the ass that shit was... The bolts are hard to get to and I didn't have a deep well socket like I needed, but eventually... 3 beers, many a thrown wrench, and lots of cursing later... I had it...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0098.jpg

Not too bad for a days work...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0099.jpg

My music selection for today was a blend of Snot, Slipknot, White Zombie, Tool, and capped things off with Sublime. Beer sponsor was Red Hook Longhammer IPA.

Yeah, I spent about a grand yesterday online ordering parts... So I figured today would be a good time to rip the motherfucker apart and wait for parts to start coming in... Of course, before I get too crazy, I got to paint... I fucking hate painting, but it needs to be done...

Nice bro... you gonna have the sub frame painted or powder coated too?

oh and for the grips and those frame pucks... you might try using a heat gun... or in a pinch a hair dryer...

was a part of that 1k you spent on parts including some new mirrors, because you need to get rid of those stock lollipops...

and now, wtf you gonna ride when i'm up there this weekend? (march 21-23)

oh yeah, next time don't wrestle so much with the grips, just take a utility knife and cut em off, then use "Goo-B-Gone" to remove the excess glue....

and of course, order yourself some Traction grips, the ergonomic design provides less stress on your hands and wrists

Yeah, I was thinking about picking up a heat gun... It's one of those things that I wish I had too many times not to just fucking get one...

I am planning on painting the subframe as well... It's rashed up from my crash, so it'll be the color of the frame too. Sometime this week I'll be removing the levers and foot controls, then the subframe is gonna go... I'm really not looking forward to it though...

Well, I only have one mirror right now... the other one is somewhere in the woods in Hocking Hills... I have no plans yet for replacements, but it's going to be done... I'll figure something out when I get my handguards on...

The last time I used a utility knife to cut off some grips I damn near cut my hand off... I'm too retarded to be trusted with sharp objects...

I ordered some ProGrips... we'll see how those do, but since they're only like $10 I won't be heartbroken if I don't like 'em...

It's not silver, it's that same strange goldish color... The side of the chin faring is all rashed up so I was thinking about getting the whole damn thing Line-X'ed... I might be able to sand out the scratches though, so I'm going to try that first... If I can, then I'm going to paint that goldish thing the same color as the frame...

Way to start a project :?:

I got a set of Progrip 724s for my Ninja. Thought they were shit when I first got the box- really thin and mushy feeling. When I got the stockers off, the PGs are softer, but on the bars they feel ok. Still considering putting the stockers back on since the PGs have a very soft flange next to the electronics pods/perches. The grips were easy to get off- just use a smallish flathead to break the glue, then shove an air nozzle in there. Balloon up and slip right off. Dish soap to go back on!

You could use normal swingarm stands (without spools)

It shouldn't be too bad... I probably won't have much of a chance to work on it until next weekend... By that time I should have my new bars and shit in... I'll probably paint in phases, starting with the shit I already have taken off...

From there it's subframe time... I am NOT looking forward to taking that bitch off... That will be one wave all in itself, removal and paint prep, then finally painting...

Then before I put that back on, I'll work on painting the swingarm and frame...

At some point in time I'll have to rotate the engine down and put on the header wrap...

More progress today... :panic:

Started small with the levers... One broke off when the bike fell over the first week I had the fucker. The other was completely lost in my crash, but replaced with a bent one that Loud_and_Low from :twf: gave me. (speaking of which, somebody PM him)

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0104.jpg

The clutch lever was pretty gnarley, so I rounded it out with the dremel... It provides three fingers worth of pull, which is real nice with the dry clutch in traffic.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0105.jpg
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0106.jpg

I eyeballed the front brake lever and went to town with the dremel... It should be right for two finger pull, but before I get them powder coated, I'm going to fit it and see... more might need to come off... or it's too short and I buy Pazzos (fuck it).

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0109.jpg

Both levers completed...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0108.jpg

At that point I unhooked all my electronics and removed/dismantled the subframe... I didn't get any pictures of the process, but it was very straightforward and boring... However, I did find a bunch of rocks and shit from Rt 56 in Hocking Hills Ohio where I crashed...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0110.jpg
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0111.jpg

Feeling inspired and armed with my new heat gun, I went to town on the puck I started the other day... It took a full hour to get it off and I didn't even bother taking any pictures during cause I was discouraged by the fact that I still have another to go (some other day :D)...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0113.jpg

At some point in time between beers, I pulled the foot controls off... I didn't get any pictures of that cause I was half drunk.

I stopped drinking at that point and started sanding... First starting with the section that was rashed up...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0115.jpg

Everything ready for primer...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0116.jpg

Working in my small confined garage with zero ventilation using liquid sander and a bunch of primer, I didn't get any pictures of that shit either... The beer had sorta worn off, then Jesus morphed through my garage door and offerend me a Fruit Roll-up. When I declined he told me that I had stopped painting 20 minutes ago and should go into the house. So I did.

Reached a stopping point today... Nothing else could be accomplished with my bike in it's current state, so now I wait for parts to come in...

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0124.jpg
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k259/onesickpsycho/IMG_0125.jpg

That was really it for today... I took off a few other small parts for powdercoating, but now I just have to wait... I also made the decision to bite the bullet and take off my engine covers for powder coating as well... I don't have the bike positioned correctly to drain the fluids so that'll wait as well...

even with the heat gun it was that hard? damn... if you think about it... get some goo-gone and once the outer part is off... soak the SHIT out of the Styrofoam and it should help. it'll also clean up that area where your other puck was.

It's not the styrofoam that's the problem, it's the double sided tape that sticks that shit to the frame... it's serious stuff.

I have Goof Off which I was planning on using to clean that up... The pucks also come with a two stage kit of some shit to prep the area...

After how well that thing saved my shit, I'm a firm believer that anyone who owns a Buell XB without frame pucks is a fucking retard.

Despite how retarded I am, I am going to rock pucks. I have the new ones... I'm thinkin' takin' off that other frame puck and putting the new ones on might be LAST thing I do... Seriously, it was that much of a pain in the ass.

So those pucks were optional???

Every XB I saw at the Buell dealership had 'em on. But the 1125 didn't have any. wonder if the regular XB ones will work on the 1125?

Yeah, the pucks aren't standard... The only one that comes with them from the factory is the Ulysses IIRC...

The 1125 technically shouldn't need them.. Since it's got Darth Vader in a headlock, that protects it in the event of a drop... Either way, the regular XB pucks probably won't work on the 1125... Different frames... Mine are different than the regular XB's.

True... I guess that is the second reason behind them big ol scoops... cheap crash protection.

Good work man.

Good work man! The only thing... how do you remember to stop and take pictures? I mean, I just came in from a while in the garage and the camera was RIGHT there. I just was to into doing what I was doing LOL

Good luck with the pucks - I loathe things that are stuck on rather than bolted.

I just did a complete build on my chopper... took about 1500 pics during the process. Multiple reasons.

1. For future refrence when putting it back together.
2. To share with others the build
3. To help others with future problems. Many times a pic is worth 1000 words and helps ALOT online.

Well, I take pictures through something that I haven't done before. But, right now when just working on it... I just remember to take pictures at the beginning then forget.

Pictures? I'm usually too busy working on a project to bother. Besides, my bike mods so far have been really easy.

I have one of these:
http://store.sporttwin.com/images/buell/99490-04Y.jpg

I could literally take my entire bike apart and put it back together with this thing... It's like phonebook thick and about the best $50 I ever spent.

You probably could have found it online.

I found the shop service manual for my bike in PDF... then printed it out at work double sided and bound that shit up into a book. Cash money.

It was worth $50 not to have to fuck with it... Plus I couldn't find it online. :D

Just have to take off the other engine cover, but I couldn't cause I left my drill at work and I need to drill out a couple rivets.

No more updates for this thread most likely... I will probably just continue on with the project in relative silence then unleash the final product as the first post in my blog.

Why wrap the headers?

OneSickPsycho
03-30-2008, 08:20 PM
Why wrap the headers?

1) They were scratched in my crash and the bike won't pass inspection with visible damage.
2) It's cheaper than replacing them.
3) Header wrap holds in the heat so the exhaust stays hotter in the header and flows better... frees up a couple HP.

Florida may be different, but in PA they won't pass you if your pipes are wrapped. They automatically assume that you're hiding something.

Yeah, there's a nice little loophole... Since I have an out of state salvage title, all I need is the following:

1) an estimate of the repair damages
or
1) pictures of the bike in it's damaged state

and

2) parts lists of all parts repaired or replaced (receipts optional)

Then I take that bitch in to be inspected and it's all good. I CANNOT take in my estimate though, cause it recognizes that the vehicle damage was more than 80% of the value of the vehicle, so they will not even look at it. Pictures on the other hand are A-Ok.

but wont' they see that the headers are damaged and then see that all you did was wrap them? I'd be eye'n flea-bay

I'm gonna risk it... I won't take in the up close picture that shows the header... You only need a picture of the front, back, and both sides... I will bring some pictures from the day when I crashed, but not one that shows the header well.

The only problem will be this picture, which when shrunk down and printed out shouldn't be too noticeable...

Looks good... you can also take some black heat paint and paint the straps over.

Oh and by the way... those straps SUCK! They will brake later. I suggest standard issue hose clamps.

Oh and on the first time you fire it up... have it outside. They will smoke like a bitch! Run them thru a few heat cycles... the first one shoudl run till they quit smoking then turn them off and let them cool till you can touch them... then run for another cycle... then cool... then you're good to go.

Yeah, I read that elsewhere... I need to pick up the header wrap sealant stuff anyway, so I'll pick up some hose clamps to finish it off right... I'll make sure to run them through a couple cycles, but from what I've read, they'll probably smoke for longer than two heat cycles...
