Dual/sport, but none of those big bikes. I would get a used Suzuki DR650.

motard or adventurer tourer, easier to go just ride by yourself. Dual sporting and dirt is more a group thing. A smaller adventure tourer can still do some light single track and tourer, a motard is pretty much just has a soul purpose.

And it looks bad in black!!

I'm sure others have mentioned this but motards can be used for trail riding with a set of typically inexpensive rims and tires. heck,KTM used to give two sets of wheels with the 525.

I say motard just because it is so versatile and so fun. It can handle a lot of off road, only time mine gets squirrely is in really deep mud or deep sand, and thats with contisport's. And sooo much fun on tight twisty roads, that someone may have all around them.

Only downfall is they are definitely not sport tourers :)

You can slap a set of nobbys on there is you want to off road it.

Motard no question.

I don't know much about motards, but I wouldn't think it would be suitable for offroad use anymore if you actually set the suspension up for street use. You could leave the dirtbike suspension, but you would sacrifice street performance for the versatility.

My vote would go to a serious motard if there was a good place to use it. The small tank prevents you from going too far from a gas station at any given time, and the infestation of the gap makes having such a narrowly focused bike less desirable. Maybe you could pick up a motard and club race it fairly cheaply in between street use.

If you have someplace you like to ride off road, a dirtbike. If not probably a KTM Motard/dual sport of some flavor.

See I would enjoy a Motard but I have discovered literally hundreds of miles of county roads and fire trails here in teh Ozarks that I am dying to see. They lead to some real dramatic and awesome scenery, but a motard wouldn't have the range or carrying capacity I would. I would also commute on the thing as my Ninja hates 30 mph city traffic...

Clarke makes replacement gas tanks that will give you 1-2 extra gallons plus you can get fender mounter gas cans that you can take with you if you plan to ride for longer than a tank of fuel will last.

I said motard, because I love mine. Grab a set of Conti tard-knobbies and they'll do pretty well off road too. That having been said I plan to buy a big dual sport sometime in the next few years because the KTM is too nice to flog in the dirt.

Being you might add another bike to your garage I'd go with a true dual sport. A small one at that. Something like a 200 to a DRZ400. I've heard a lot of dualers say the smaller duals are better for trails than the 650s and up. But with the small duals you can go on some very tough forest trails but still pop out on the road for a bit without getting a ticket.

If you only had one bike and good funds I'd get something like a BMW GS800.

It's rather obvious which was my choice.:pat:

I am thinking about getting a set of 17" rims made up so that I can run street tires just for the hell of it.

There's nothing that brings out the stupid like a 100-HP dirt bike.

One of the Dumbest things I have done in the past 5 years was in 05 I bought a left over 04 VStrom I rode it about everywhere there was a path. (It was by no means in the same class with the KTM of the BMW nor at $6800new was it any where near as pricey) I bout the busa in July and the wife started to vetch about insurance cost, so when a guy came down the drivey and offered $6800 I took the money. It was a great ride anwhere hose it off and head out again bike.

If they are built like my buddy's KTM dirtbike 250 then it'd have shitloads of umph to it. I road an old NX250 that was slow but fun to ride. However, my buddy's 250 is just crazy fast.

these are 4 strokes, I haven't ridden the DRZ400 but have ridden the 250's from Kawi and Yamaha. not enough power on the street from my test rides anyway. but then again, I ride an 06 ZX10R and there aren't that many bikes that impress me for grunt.

Touratech has tank conversions for the 800 & 650 (twin) that will increase the fuel capacity to 9.5 gallons. It is not on their website yet but it is in their catalog.
