This is alot like the story of Christopher McCandless, In to the Wild. they recently made it into a movie. He donated his life savings ($25,000 minus like 1500 for expenses) to a charity... and hitch hiked to AK. The book and movie were very intresting...

I had the book on tape and listened to it on the drive back up to AK from my parents when I got back from Kuwait. it made me wonder about doing the same thing myself... just go off and rid myself of all I know... and start again... asking myself if I could do it...

In the end I'm still not sure if I could, I couldn't drop everything and live in the woods like Christopher McCandless did... but I could sell everything (cept for my bike and gear) and start again.

I basically did this when I joined the AF... I hated where my life was headed... so I sold everything I owned, minus my car and like $100 of clothes and started over.

Ths is basically what I just did. Sold my house, whittled down my belongings, took a voluntary layoff and picked up and moved to NC. I plan on riding my bike all over the area once the weather breaks for good. I don't have any plans beyond that. I was tired of my life and the rut I was in and decided to do something about it.

If I didn't have my daughter, I'd do something similar. Not sure I'd choose NC, but don't really know where I'd choose since I can't do it anyway...

Yea,I couldn't have done it if I had children. I looked at climate, economic data, etc and chose this area. The cost of living is very low and when/if I want to get a job, there's plenty. Plus it's basically central to wear I want to go this Summer.
