Anyone here into growlers? I am. I bought one last week...had it filled with Troegs Hopback Amber Ale...a local brew. Really good shit.


For those that dont know...a growler is 64 oz. of beer in a giant container. They rule.

I should have qualified that by saying $8 for some of the best beer ever. Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale at 8.5% alcohol. :rockout:

I've never had the Hopback but I'm going to have to look for. I love hoppy beers. I just had some Arcadia Hopmouth Double IPA last week. Great stuff.

You probably won't be able to find it unless you travel east. I believe they only distribute in a 4 or 5 state area around PA.

Last time I had it filled with their Duckabish Amber.
I think it's about due for another fill... poor thing has been sitting empty for a while.
And you $5 and $8 refill guys shouldn't complain.

Why? You pretty much need to drink them in one sitting anyway otherwise they go flat. :idk: The breweries here heat shrink the caps on so if you don't open them they will keep for a while but once you open them, you need to drink them and a flip top lid wont help. As little as 12 oz removed from the grower will allow enough space for the beer to go flat.

After a few... I tend to bend (or fold flat...) or lose the caps... :D Then it has to sit open :panic:

I was going to ask about how long they keep.

Once opened they are good for a day or so?

Opened, I've had very little carbonation left after 2 days. Unopened, I don't know exactly how long they last. I can't ever just let them sit but I have gone 3 days before opening and it's just as it was just poured straight from the keg. The key is brown growlers so the light doesn't get to the beer and of course a tight seal on the cap. I would imagine a week unopened should be ok but again, I can't wait that long.

I buy mine from the local breweries. There are 3 of them here in town and they will fill growlers from any brewery even if it has the logo for a different brewery on it.

Yep...if you open it right away you need to drink it with in a day or two. Mine started to go flat after about 24 hours....but at that point there was only one pint left in it anyway.



And Shmike...I bought mine at the sub shop I mentioned. But alot of breweries have them too.

My initial purchase for the growler was 18 plus the 5 dollar fill.
