View Full Version : My Bike Is Gone!

A friend of mine who helps me do maintainence to her just came with a friend and picked her up. Since he has all the tools at his house, it was more feasible for him to pick her up and take her to his place instead of trying to lug all his shit to mine. He's going to work on her tonight and tomorrow hopefully have her finished, except for an oil change, although that may get done too, instead of this weekend. It depends upon his work and stuff.

So next time I see her, she'll have new shoes on, a new front brake reservoir (I gotta find me a kick ass sweat band now. ), and the brake bled. Woo-Hoo! :D :D

Now I'm worried something will happen while she's out of my site. It's just my luck that something will happen and I won't be able to make it to the rally.

that is much better news than what I thought reading the topic. LOL

I've got one in the garage I'll be working on.

it started out being a carb clean but when we talked to them when they dropped it off it's basicaly turned into a major job. carb clean, front pads, fork rebuild, tires... and anything else it needs to be road worthy.

why the new reservoir?

Oops. My bad. I didn't realize how it would sound. I didn't say it was stolen.

The front brake fluid reservior had begun to dry rot a little from sitting out in the weather. :( It didn't help matters when I kicked it and it snapped off at the base where it bolts on. I had to get another one.

Now she has a home in the corner under the carport. I need to find a cover to keep the damn pollen off of her.

When I put the trunk on the back, I usually dismount by throwing my leg in front over the tank. I was in a hurry (had to go to the bathroom  ) and lightly kicked it getting off the bike not paying attention. Since it was dry rotting, it snapped easy.

I honestly don't think I'd be able ot throw my foot over the front of the bike

I don't think I'd have the coordination

It doesn't help very much. The wind still pushes it all under the cover.

I can throw my leg over the trunk just fine mounting. Dismounting I hit the trunk everytime. It's easier to throw it over the front. No coordination needed. Just swing your leg! You've taken martial arts for years...I'd expected you to be able to do it. redflip

Tools are like real estate, they never really lose their value, and are very valueable to the owner. Some of the best money I've ever spent.

On that note, glad you are getting everything checked out and up to par.

I also severely injured my back a few weeks ago and the pain now radiating down my left leg :(

Update:

Tires are on,front brake reservior is on and brakes are bled (at least the front one...rear is still not working correctly), radiator has been flush....but she has a problem. According to my friend, the clutch is slipping. :( I have no clue as how to troubleshoot it, how to replace any of it, or how much it's going to cost.

He's bringing her back in a little while. I'll have more details on the clutch issue later.

Fuck. I wanna cry. :( :(

yes, can be caused by a misadjusted cable or some bikes have a screw and locknut at the clutch that can be incorrectly set. also some oils will cause slippage, the reason to make sure there are no friction modifiers in the oil you put in your bike.

The cables have never really been adjusted (to my knowledge unless the ex did it) and I've always used V-Twin specific oil. :idk:

What type of kit would I need to look for? I'm looking at the microfiche on my bike now as well as googling for parts. I'm kind of at a loss since I know jack shit about this. Can anyone point me in a general direction of what I need? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

your guy may be able to tell you the reason, I was just giving out some examples of what could cause it.

depending on how bad it is you may need steel and fiber plates, would need to look at them before ordering or just go ahead and get both to be safe to have all the parts you need. I'll let others suggest parts for it. I'm partial to using OEM parts when I can.

did he say anything about your oil when he changed it? I always look at what settles in the bottom of the pan after I empty the drain pan.

He didn't change the oil as it was still clean. Although I have plans on changing it before the rally, if I even get to go now. I usually go with whatever parts is good at the best price. I don't race. I don't ride hard. I don't need stuff with all the latest technology that drives the cost of the part up.

You'll need a side cover gasket, "X" amount of clutch plates and possibly "X" amount of steel ctutch plates.

I'll get a picture of the clutch hub in my H1 triple and it'll give you an idea what to look for.

It's not brain surgery but just pay attention to where everything goes for when you put it back together. Take plenty of digital pics

The gear on the outer clutch basket is driven by the crankshaft. When the clutch is pulled in, the fiber and steel plates do not touch. When the clutch is released, the springs press the steel and fiber plates together and make the cycle go.

The fiber plates are smooth on the inside and have tabs which fit into the main clutch housing. The steel plates are splined which fit onto the aluminum hub and smooth on the outside. The spring rings in the back fit in between the steel plates and inside the fiber plates.

If the steel plates are discolored from heat or scarred/gouged, replace them. If your fingernail catches a groove, replace them. You can check them for flatness on a piece of new house window glass ( new meaning glass from the 70s or newer. )

If they look OK, you can clean them up with 240 or 320 grit sandpaper. Clean very well before reusing them.

Here's a closer shot of the steel and fiber plates

I'm not doubting your friend's diagnosis, but have you noticed any difference in the clutch feel, release, or acceleration of your bike? I would think you would notice the difference versus someone just taking your bike out for a spin.

That's why I rode it as soon as he brought it back. Honestly, I felt no difference, other than the clutch lever needing an adjustment. :idk:

From the way he talks, I think what he found was the false neutral. I'm going to take her for a ride tomorrow and see how she acts when shifting between 5th & 6th. I know I've found a false neutral a few times between 5th and 6th. According to folks on svrider, my year/model is prone to have a false neutral.

Other than that, the front brake will stop on a damn dime now :panic: and the tires are most awesome! :D

Oh yeah...anyone have one of those handy dandy sweat bands they can let go of so I can put it around my new reservoir?

hard shifts, pulling even when the clutch lever is pulled in, etc.

How many miles are on your SV Steph? I'm in the far end of the 25k neighborhood and the only issues I've had was that the clutch cable stretched and gave me issues like would happen when the clutch goes bad (it eventually broke which took care of that problem ). New cable and the switch to semi-synthetic oil seem to have eliminated the problems.

If you're not clutching wheelies all the time, or pulling dragstrip launches, I haven't heard of many problems.

I agree I cant see it going out with thats rot of riding. The clutch on my TL went but thats after 25k miles a full track season and some prety agressive street riding.

I"m sure it's just he was soft shifting it after talking with Rogue last night. He was only feeling it when he was shifting, not after it engaged and was pulling.
