It is okay to keep a helmet in my trunk?
My thought is the heat won't be a problem, cause if I was riding in the baking sun - it would be the same heat.
I have several helmets and I was thinking I'd keep one in the trunk of my car, in case I an un-expected opportunity to ride. :D

Wait, you're in Hawaii.. it doesn't really get HOT in Hawaii.
I can't imagine it would be that much of a problem.. highs are usually in the 80's right? Trunk is shaded, and while the temperature inside would be higher than the ambient outside temperature, being as I typically ride in upper 90's/100 degree temps here in Texas, I don't really think it would be too much of an issue.
But I'm no expert.

I wouldn't leave it in the trunk, the concentrated heat could cause the foam to de-bond from the shell, although I doubt it's very likely. I'd be more concerned about all the rolling around it would do back there, although something like the Scorpion racecase would take care of it. I have one and it's great. You can find them on amazon for about $40.

I left a torque wrench in my hatchback, and even though the hatch is a completely covered area with a plastic cover on top of it, the wrench was too hot to touch.

i wouldn't leave it in your trunk. the liner is some kinda styrofoam and the heat may make it more brittle over time.

Exactly.
At the track, I store mine in the office rather than in the garage with the rest of the gear. The reason for that is the temp the garage gets to. Rather safe than sorry... my head is too important to figure out if the helmet will degrade faster or not.

I know you can't keep a bowling ball in your trunk, the layers lose their cohesion and you end up with a cracked or dead ball that never rolls right again. Learned that the hard way. That's what gives me pause about the helmet in the trunk.

You can always find space around your house...for instance, when I got a second helmet I found it fits quite nicely in the paper recycling bin. :leaving:

I don't think I would leave it in there for days on end, but a couple times here or there would probably be OK. It's really up to you.

Are you guys serious?
Of coarse its fine to leave a helmet in the trunk. Some of your people are seriously over analyzing it. How fuckin hot does it get in your garage or shed, especially when you park a 2 ton heat machine of a car or truck in there and close the door???
If you are that concerned, instead of asking a bunch of internet people. Why don't you call the manufacture of the helmet?? get the real deal info instead of all our opinions.

eh go buy a cheap lid and stick it in the oven at 250 degrees for 6 hours and look for discoloration or deformation of the outer shell.
cut the shell in half in order to check inner core temps...............
ok whatever throw it in the trunk and it should be fine.

Most garages stay cool. Cars can get extremely hot while sitting in the sun. In the trunk would be much better then sitting in the window but it would still be hot. Myself, I wouldn't do it all the time because like someone said it could get damaged rolling around.
I would get a case, soft cover or just wrap it in a towel or blanket to keep it from getting banged up.
Contacting the manufacture isn't a bad idea just to see what they say.
And there is nothing wrong with getting some opinions online. You can get some bs answers but you can also get some good info. My big screen that I'm watching now was bought about 4 years ago. I asked for advise online before going to the stores and I have been very happy with it.

You want to store a helmet in the trunk of your car...
The purpose is to have a helmet in case you want to go an unexpected ride.
Am I the only one who missed where you have a bike to ride after driving somewhere in your car with a helmet in the trunk?

Haha. I don't think heat really make styrofoam brittle otherwise they probably wouldn't use it as insulation in coffee cups, thermoses, coolers, etc. The bigger concern would probably be the issue someone mentioned of the glue delaminating although I'm prone to agree that the inside of a car, even in the sun, can't get hot enough to do serious damage to a helmet. I would think they make sure the tolerances for failure are a lot higher than 140 degrees.

As for getting that unexpected ride, PLEASE carry gear as well as a helmet. I will never forget the night a buddy picked a girl up. She looked so cute in her flip flops, itty bitty cotton shorts and tank top, but she had a HELMET!! I couldnt ride behind them, I cringed every time I saw her that night. *shudder*

I keep jeans/shoes in the car in case I need a change of clothes. I've had opportunities to ride when not excepted... like a co-worker brought their new bike to work and told me I could take it for a spin. Or a friend needed help getting their bike to the shop for service. Stuff like that. :idk:
Just had the thought of keeping my extra helmet and gloves in the car. I won't ride without my gear.

Vibrations? Come on...
You asked for info from the manufacture. With high temps things get soft, add in vibrations and things can come apart.
Years ago I worked a morning shift and was off just after lunch. It was a hot ass day. I starting my car, cranked up my system and started to drive off. 20 seconds later I had a my rear view mirror fall on my hand.
The manufacture could be just playing it safe to save them on replacing some helmets.
There is a really good chance that the helmet would be fine, but what many are saying in this thread is they don't want to bet their life on it.
I wouldn't do it because of possible damage from the sun or from sliding/rolling around. Plus I wouldn't like the lost space in the trunk.

No problem. I figured it was the only way to "resolve" this question.
Somewhere I heard a story about a Nolan brand helmet caved in the top of the helmet and deformed it, by sitting in the sun. A trunk would be protected from direct sun, but still.

I'm actually wondering if you might be better off leaving a helmet in the direct sun instead of a trunk. At least outside it has a chance to dissipate some of that heat into the atmosphere and with the help of wind. Trapped in a car trunk it's going to get and stay very hot for a very long time. I mean, when you think about it, people do leave their helmets out in direct sunlight for hours at a time even in very hot atmospheres. Every person who rides a bike on a decently long ride in Texas, NM or AZ will have their helmet exposed to direct sunlight for hours on end. We would see a higher per rider fatality rate for helmeted riders in hot states if the helmets broke down under those conditions.

The other thing is that typically trunks don't smell very good. Also, at night humidity/condensation might be a problem.

A helmet sitting outside would see lower temperatures then being in a car, so I agree with you.
The story of the caved in helmet must have been in a car near the window for that to happen.

I'd worry that the heat would cause the shell to dry out, which would make it prone to cracking and delamination.
