It is supposed to be rated up to 600 lbs and the bike isn't near that much. Hell it was just as expensive as the ramps I wanted except I get to use my bed space and I feel that I can safely load and unload the bike on my own.

I should find out this afternoon or tomorrow whether my bike is totaled or not but I am rolling the dice and going with no. If not, this can just go to Alaska and get sold again lol.

The insurance lady said I could take the bike with me and drop it off up there for repairs. I am sure there is at least one bike repair shop in all of Alaska.

And on top of all of this, I reserved a uhaul car carrier and I plan to take apart my Mustang tomorrow and then tow it to southern Illinois where it will sit till I win the lottery and fix it up again.

Also put my first tank of diesel in the F250 and I managed about 16 mpg and that was with a wonderfully heavy foot. :rockwoot:

I just don't feel right about those. Maybe if they attached in two or more points I would, but not with just the single receiver. ???

I gotta agree, I can see that thing just twisting left and right.

I'd feel better about putting the bike in the back of the truck, packing stuff around i and putting soem small light stuff in a basket on teh hitch.

Can't do it. My beast wouldn't fit even with the tailgate off. Put it in the bed, strap it down, and pack shit around it.

Ah that thing is fine! Although I will say that the original ones came with three mounting points....

If it were me,I'd mount the thing and then use two ratchet straps on each end of it to further secure it to the hitch. To be honest,it's highly unlikely to the point of impossibility that a 400 lb bike could cause that 2" ,1/4 thick + steel tube to "twist" in the receiver. There's basically only 200 lbs to each side of the pivot...

yep, if you got a store near you, go to it. I got the 12" tire one cheaper than that on sale, the store near me has cheaper prices than listed there.

Problem is then I would have to find a home for a trailer all summer while living on my employer's property.

Thats a great idea but in this situation I can fit this shit in my room or just leave it hooked to my truck without worrying about flat tires or having someone run off with it.

Its a short bed and I will probably be carrying the motor, transmission, and various other parts of my Mustang that I am hoping to part out tomorrow and literally sell as I go down the road. Not to mention carrying all my tools, jack, jack stands and random other shit.

Originally the bike was going to go in the bed but I have run out of time and room for all my plans.

Yeah they specifically state that you shouldn't use it for rear engine mounted scooters (or own them for that matter) since the engine wouldn't be directly over the hitch.

With the rough roads you'll travel through Alaska, I'd rig a rachet strap to each end of the rack and up to the stake pockets on the back corner of your bed and that runs the risk of rubbing the paint on the bed too. You're not travleing all nice smooth paved roads so remember that. Can it take bouncing and jarring with the bike on there? Just some things to consider :idk:

I can hardly stand to watch mine on a regular trailer let alone one of these. Though I do trust my husband's tie down method, just paranoid something will happen to my baby.
I needed the enclosed trailer so I can't see how much it's moving around! LOL.

Tigger hit right... the one that was linked has a 3 point hook up to the truck for "anti tilting" with that over just the single bar into the reciever I think you'll be ok.

Asshat! I wanted a long bed but now I am happy that my truck is 2 feet shorter then it could have been!

Plus, the price was hard to pass up. :D

Thanks for the advice, I went out and bought various towing things for my truck today. I will buy several extra straps just to have around.

When I get it and get the bike on I will take plenty of pics. :rockwoot:

Yea,so there! Hey,Chris you probably remember when those things first came out and everybody was "NO FUCKING WAY!!!"(including myself!). Well, they've been out for some time now and I have to say that I've never heard of one "twisting',falling apart or anything like that and I'm certain that if even ONE did it would be all over the forums like a wildfire!

BTW for the tube to twist in the receiver it would have to take the pin with it,I sure don't see that happening! If you're REALLY worried,I guess you could drill a 3/8-1/2 hole vertically through both the tube and the receiver and bolt it with a hardened/stainless bolt and a nylock nut.

Exactly.

Those recievers and pins are trusted to haul 10,000 pounds and you guys are worried about a 400lb bike twisting it like a pretzel.

Good buy, Quick. Have a great trip! :pat:

I agree. I was saying the same thing. But like you said... pls with the added 2 extra stabalizing points. I think they're probably ok.

I wouldnt drill anything extra in, then you may comprimise the reciever and tube.

Exactly.

Quick have you looked into UHAUL?! the 5x8 I rented from Anchorage to Biloxi was $580 or so... that's a fully enclosed trailer... or you could try finding an open trailer and putting your bike in the bed of the truck (as it won't catch the rocks kicked up by your truck)

Well I just got back from a overnight haul to Southern Illinois and back. Dropped off my Mustang (which I ended up not parting out) and then brought back a Mitsubishi which I have to clean out in the am and try to sell at Carmax for my mom.

Loved the f250 and how it towed. 5000 lbs was a joke and I managed just over 14 mpg while towing which is about 1 or 2 mpg higher then anything else I have ever towed with. Either way, I trust my hitch now. :pat:

I missed the package delivery for today so I will pick it up Monday morning and then install the system followed by going to pick my bike up. I found out the bike wasn't totaled so now I take it with me to Alaska and will need to get two repair quotes once I get up there.

I was worried about stuff kicking up and hitting my bike but I am going to put my bike cover over it and then secure it down to that it won't parachute up or anything.

I have several days of driving ahead so I should be able to get it all figured out with time. Hope to leave Tuesday am for Waco, Texas.

I've used one of those. Helpful hints: Strap down the tires. That will keep the bike from bouncing out of the channel. Strap the handlebars to the bumper. Most of the time the bike tends to lean outward-away from the truck. Watch out for any major bumps in the road. You don't want to put any undue stress on the bike.

My dad pulls a 8' by 16' trailer every day through the spring, summer, and fall that typically has 400 gallons of lawn chemicals in it at the beginning of the day and right after lunch. He's also hauled the full trailer 3 hours to Kansas City, or a 30 foot long gooseneck with 5 hot tubs on it. He absolutely loves the thing.

Like others said, you don't have to worry about twisting the reciever tube, but it can put a lot of torsional load on the weld where the rail is attached to the tube. I'm just saying since you'll have some rough roads... I'm the cautious sort ;) If you cover the bike, make sure the cover is secured tight everywhere, if any part of it flaps, it'll beat the hell out of whatever it's flapping against and it'll remove paint etc.

Mr Lefty
03-28-2009, 12:04 PM
Yeah.. Its not the tube I'd be worried about... But the welds
