It all started with Birgit's mother, whom I've never met. Birgit, a friend of my wife, has a mother that makes one of the best Black Forrest Cherry Cakes in all of Germany. For reasons known only to her, it was decided that I nedded one. It was the kind of a cake that was so good, it could cause a person to have a stroke.
So I did.
One minute I am sitting at the table eating cake, the next I'm saying "boorhay mitz serkas mohor" which means "my arm is numb and I can't see" in a language that apparently only stroke victims understand. "Well", I thought to myself, "that can't be good". As it turns out, it was good, at least in the way that getting hit by a train is good, as long it doesn't kill you.
"You almost died", said my doctor in not reassuring english. "Your left cardicotic artery is completely blocked, and you need surgery, or maybe not, we're not sure yet". "Nice to meet you too" I said. At least, I think I said that. "Your brain had a cross over" he continued, "the right artery is doing what the left side normally does. You are very lucky".
I was tempted to tell him that my idea of luck, involved eating cake without my head exploding, but I decided to wait on that one. I have the feeling that between German, English and "Stroke Weillian" something would be lost in translation.
So, now I'm stuck here in a German hospital for at least a week, if not more, waiting for a surgery to repair an artery that was according to Herr Doctor damaged by the radiation treatments that saved my live 16 years ago. Such is life.
In the meantime, I'm teaching the nurses english. Or not. It's hard to say at this point. Just when I'm sure "Sabine" has mastered "I shot J.R.", Yvonne gets "I know how to see the tits on the Land 'O Lakes butter princess" hopelesly jumbled.
It's going to be a long week.
JC
JC's wife here: the stroke happened on Monday evening, and luckily he improved a huge amount in the last 2 days. He wrote (and re-wrote) this "story" this morning on a piece of paper and gave it to me to post. As of now his motor skills are normal, his speach and reading is good (he's reading a lot), but for now, he can't spell right at all - it's called Aphasia .... and I am way to exhausted to proof everthing I typed and/or install an english version of spell check on this computer.

HOLY CRAP MAN!
I guess the 'vacation' is going to be a bit longer than expected. On the upside, German doctors get an A+. Must be some sort of compensatory mechanism for the bad rap they got 70 years ago. Let me know if you need anything when you get back. You know, like a 13"x19" of an umbrella girl to keep you company. I'm sure wifey won't mind.

Thank's everyone, I'll let you know how the follow up tests go tomorrow.
To answer the burning question in everyones#s mind, yes there is cake left, and no, you can't have it.
Oddly, that was one of the first questions I asked my wife.
"My mom saved it for you" she said.
"Really?"
"We are Bavarians. Stroke or not, we don't throw cake away."
That made sense to me, but I coudn't help but wonder what would happen to it if I've died?
Would the death cake be burried along side of me, as a faithful confectionary companion into the under world? Would it be set out to sea in a wooden boat, like some sort of returning Bavarian Viking?
Now I'll never know.

So what's the latest? You doing ok, JC?
Things have gotten a little weirder over the last day, but I'm ok.
Test results yesterday revealed more of the same, which is neither good or bad in my situation. The artery is still not open for business, but my brain no longer shops there, so fuck him. There was no place to park anyway.
My immeditate problem is my new roommate, Herr Georg. He has, in my professialon opionin, lost his marbles. Given his age, (some where between 90 and 132) I estimate his marbles jumped ship some time in the late 1970's.
He likes to talk to himself, flowerpots, walls, coffee cups, and, of course, me. The trouble is, none of us can understand a goddamn word he says. He also has a habit of making animal noises, (to be fair, they might actually be bird noises, which I guess is slighty better) and making the sound '' Ooooh-bis-bis-bis-bis'' when ever he hears a siren. Our room is seven floors above the ER entrance, so this is a pettry common place occurance.
None of that however, strikes me as stange. Old goofy people can be found everywhere, and hospitals are certainly no exception. What does strike me as stanrge, is the wierd competion between us, in which each one of us thinks the other is the crazy one. I, apparentenly, am the one who is out of place here.
It's like being in a Kaukfa novel, where none of the charcters know who the talking bug is. The just certain it's not them.
For the time being, I'm just going to avoid eye contact, and pretend I'm not really in the same room.

And, uh....you may want to read the fine print on this "risen from the dead" contract of yours, too...I think you may have overlooked some sort of proviso or exclusionary clause or something....you know, like the bearer of this document is entitled to reconstitution from death brought about by excessive flogging and/or crucifixion (but is irrevocably fucked if death is brought about by consumption of German Black Forest Cake (tm)...) :lmao:

A side note on German hospitals...
If you want to get healthy, don't come to one. Oh sure, the medical care is first rate, and they have all the latest gadets, cutting edge procedures and techniques. You can definetly get better here, but healthly, er, no.
Since I just had a stroke caused by a clogged artery, I figured a hospital would be a good place to change my wicked ways, and give up smoking and drinking (at least for the weekend). My first trip to the lobby proved that is perhaps the not best place for such dramatic lifestyle changes.
At the far end, the is lovely little cafe that offers espresso, giant saugases, and...cake. Again with the fucking cake...
Next door, is a small deli that sells a big hunks of fat laden cheese, beer, wine, and of course, cigarettes. Can't have a proper hospital without those, now could you? If the deli is closed, there are beer and cigarette machines near the back elevators.
Smoking is frowned upon in the hospital, unless you count the 3 sided glass kisok on the mezzaine, the open air pavillions outside each door, and the balconies at the end of each and everone of the hallways with patient rooms. There is even a ''smoking place'' outside the chaple, for sinners on the go. I've been to casinos in Bangkok that had fewer places to smoke.
The only I haven't seen yet is a brothel.
Then again, I haven't been to the 8th floor yet either...

I said "yeah, it's terrible he had that stroke out in germany, at least he had some delicious cake before hand."
She looked at me all confused and gave me some piece of paper about you and drove off.
 I'm gonna have to remember that the next time I get harassed

Not sure yet. Fucking doctors are all, ''We need more tests, blah, blah, blah.''
Fuck that bullshit. The artery is either open or closed, give me the goddamed ultrasound, and I'll fucking do it myself. Buncha pussies.
They've pushed to me back to a release on Thursday, with any luck, I'll be on a plane by Tuesday.
It could be worse though. I have an old friend who works for Audi, which is right in here in town (Ingolstadt). He's smuggling me out for dinner tonight. The doctors are going to shit kittens when they find out, but that's thier problem.

That sounds like a direct impact of their diets... I don't know if I'd want someone who eats whole kittens treating ME :panic:

Obviously wifey can't say I told you so by simply playing on omniscience, so she actually has to tell you so.
Then again, "You should have known better" is pretty much a given.

Just no seeing this! So glad you are doing better (or unchanged). Have fun at dinner!
Now, since nothing has gotten better or worse what happens now? Do you come back to the states to see a specialist? I can't imagine they send you home to wait for it to happen again ....?
Glad you are okay ;)

Not particularly, but "He gave his only begotten son so that they could eat cake." doesn't have quite the ring to it. In fact it sounds vaguely French.

It was a strong German cake, not the wussie French stuff.

That's about the size of it.
Operating on the artery now is too risky (some bullshit about my head filling up with blood). If it opens up on it's own, I'm cool. If it opens up just a little bit, that's cool too. If it stays the way it is, that's also cool, but not as cool as it could be.
In the service, this is known as ''hurry up and wait''.

How was dinner?
Remember, too much schnitzel can lead to heartburn, which the good doctors will think is a heart attack.
Hmmmm. Wonder what these paddles do? CLEAR! :zowned:

Dinner was great. We found an Indian place that made a great Lamb curry.
Only problem was, the hospital closes it's doors at 8:30. Took forever for the bastards to let me back in. :zowned:
If it wasn't for the portable heart monitor I was wearing, I'd still be on the front porch.
