7 things to do in the dark
http://www.care2.com/greenliving/7-things-to-do-in-the-dark.html
Get amorous – Spend some quality time with your significant other and enjoy giving each other massages, trying something tantric or making love by candlelight. The added benefit (as if you needed one?), it’s good for you!
Enjoy dinner by candlelight – Prepare the food beforehand, or go with simple, no-cook finger foods. For a special touch, add flowers to the table and serve chocolates for dessert. Yum!
Take a bubble bath – Who doesn’t love a long, luxurious soak in a bath…and what better time to take advantage of some quiet time with candles? Admit it, just thinking about it makes you feel good!
Meditate – An hour of darkness is a great opportunity to tune out the rest of the world and go within. Find a comfortable space in your home and spend some time in meditation - it’s good for you and good for the planet. (Just be careful if you still have candles burning!)
An hour with the lights out also means that it’s a great time to get outside and:
Gaze at the stars – Even if you are in the city, it could be a good night to see the constellations, as many cities will be dimmer during the event.
Take a [crescent] moonlit walk – With the new moon on March 26th, only a sliver of the moon - a waxing crescent moon - will be visible on Saturday night but it could still be a great night to get outside, take the dog for a walk, and search for the crescent in the night sky.
Prefer a group activity? Gather some friends together and have an Earth Hour party - inside or outside. Create your own Earth Hour cocktails, have some fun with cheese or chocolate fondue (only tea light candles required), break out the board games or musical instruments, or even attempt charades by candlelight. The more creative you get, the better the party! And, you might even want to try it again next Saturday night - any excuse for a party, right?
Anyway I'm gonna go rent a movie from on demand that I wanted to watch instead of turning off my lights

Nothing is going to actually change because the power company will still produce the same amount of electricity based on historical and max needs of the area served for a saturday night.

Yes, it would hurt me. I work for a company that generates power for the masses. I really want to cut into my company's profits by participating in this asinine project by WWF.....
BTW, 1 hour wouldn't even give us time to shut down the peakers and they also scheduled this during a time when the grid is very lightly loaded to begin with, we wouldn't shutdown anything and the carbon impact from this would be almost zero. It was a dumbass goal. You need a few hours in the middle of a business day that is one of the hottest or coldest days of the year to make a large impact.
CrazyKell
03-29-2009, 02:35 PM
To me, the point is not that it's going to have a significant impact for the one hour. Obviously (for the reasons you stated) it's not. It's to raise awareness and show people that you don't have to have every single light on in your house just because you can. It's called a social conscience....some people don't have one. :idk:

I make extra money from recycling. I was collecting soda cans around the shop, taking the metal from the crates in. last summer it was well worth taking it in, today it's about 1/5th of what it was. that sucks.
around here, that little blue container for recyclables cost you an extra $15/month for them to come pick it up. there's an incentive for you. they charge you to pick it up and make they money off it when they turn it in.
I see Deffenbaugh or WM trucks where I take my scrap every time I go.
My bro did that last summer, he just drove around towns emptying the cans into the back of his truck then when he filled it up a few times he would make a run to the scrapper who would give him just about $100 for a load. He was doing 4 loads a day for a while.

Fifteen Patients Die as Earth Hour Kills Life Support in Hospital
By Brian Briggs
San Francisco, CA – Fifteen patients on life support and in surgery died at San Francisco General Hospital when power was cut for "Earth hour" on Saturday.
The hospital was pleased with their participation in the worldwide celebration of the planet. "We asked all the patients and their families if they were all right with us cutting the power. To a person, they all said as stewards of this planet it was their duty to observe Earth Hour. They knew the risks and were willing to take it," said hospital administrator Lawrence Cho.
Cho said that it was a net gain for planet Earth, despite the deaths. "The dead patients will no longer use any energy, and actually will be turned into energy in our patient incinerator," said hospital administrator Lawrence Cho.
As power was cut in the critical care ward some patients screamed in pain, others died calmly in their sleep. Cho said that most of the medical equipment has battery-powered back up systems, but those were disabled, because hospital officials felt that violated the spirit of Earth Hour.

Heart surgeon Dr. Gregory Morris was doing an open-heart procedure when the lights went out. "I wasn't sure what I was cutting into. Turns out it wasn't his heart, but his bowels. Unfortunately, Mr. Simms didn't make it."
Marla Tompkins, surviving sister of cancer patient Warren Tompkins, said, "Warren struggled for breath as his ventilator was powered down. I thought he might make it, but with three minutes left before power was to be turned back on, he expired. It was tragic, but kept me on the edge of the seat the whole time."
Cho hopes other hospitals learn from the example of San Francisco General and participate in next year's Earth Hour.

Oh Lord this has to be a joke. There is no way this would be allowed to happen
I was working Saturday night and did my little part by shutting half the lights down in the ER. I work with a bunch of older nurses that complain about not being able to see in normal lighting conditions, they need it exceptionally glaring bright at all hours of the night/morning. There's no windows in our ER. It's like being in a war bunker. I can't handle the lights at 3-4 in the morning and always turn any non essential lights off when I can.
We waste a lot of power in our hospital and we are in a 7 million dollar deficit that they are trying to curve by decreasing elective surgeries for a month or 2. If people just shut off lights in lunch rooms, offices, hallways that don't need the over head lights on, misc tv's, etc... It's not even an issue of security b/c there's 6 light switches in a four feet radius of our institution. It's just waste.
And I have to call BS on that story. We have emergency generators that kick in the minute there is a slight blip in power. If care facilities are shutting down power to vents/operating rooms than I'll gladly pay my taxes for socialized health care where we don't kill people and charge them $$$ for it :)

I agree. Hospitals have some who-yo-daddy generators that will keep everything powered. And even if you jacked the plug from a life support machinery it should have enough juice for an hour or so.
However it is in California which is just a fucked up political system. Even if it was true I'm sure Pelosi would say it was for the "common good" and that it's better since they are dead and no longer farting and killing the ozone.

False.
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=turn-fluorescent-lights-off-when-you-leave-room
http://www.lightingdesignlab.com/articles/switching/switching_fluorescent.htm
Misconception #1: It takes more energy to start a fluorescent that it does to run it, so leave the lights on all the time to save money on your electric bill.
Reality: When you turn on a fluorescent light bulb (correctly called a "lamp"), there is a very brief jump in current when the ballast charges the cathodes and causes the lamp to start. This inrush of current can be many times greater than the normal operating current of the lamp. However, the spike of current draw normally lasts no longer than 1/10th of a second, and draws the equivalent of about 5 seconds of normal operation. So, if you turn your fluorescent lamp off and on more frequently than every 5 seconds, you will use more power than normal. So, normal switching of fluorescent lamps has very, very, very little effect on a power bill.

Another pro for Mythbusters. They did actual measurements of the amount of power used to start up various lights. Their measurements showed that turning on a fluorescent light took less power than is used in the time it takes to go to your fridge and back.

My father, the engineer, and knower off all things ridiculous, would never had taught us kids to turn the lights off to save energy when we were little if it costs more to switch them on/off.
To this day it bugs me to go into someone's home bathroom, or house room for that matter and to have the light on "just" cause.
In our house, most lights are turned off unless otherwise needed. All bulbs are efficient as well.

All bulbs are efficient as well.
was that with the incandescent bulbs? we were always told to shut lights off too. we have those CFL's and a 4' one downstairs, we shut them off just like they were any other light we use.

Another pro for Mythbusters. They did actual measurements of the amount of power used to start up various lights. Their measurements showed that turning on a fluorescent light took less power than is used in the time it takes to go to your fridge and back.
I find it wrong that Mythbusters would harm our enviroment by using excess power for profit. Time for some legislation.

And I find it objectionable that some people put mayonnaise on fries, but some things are just beyond our control.
