View Full Version : How old were you?

When you moved out of your parent's house? Or if you still live there, how old are you?

I moved out 33 days after my 18th birthday. Moved back for 6 months when I was 19 and haven't been back since...with the exception of the week I spent at their house after my accident.

I was 22 when my parents moved out. They actually purchased a house "in town" and moved and I took over the family farm.

I have never moved. Yet...

I *tried* to move out as soon as I got back from basic/AIT.. but my mom wouldn't let me. Yeah, I don't get that either. Being as they were paying for my car insurance, I wasn't really in a position to complain at the time.. I finally moved out on my own when I was 19.. lived with the parents briefly right after my accident when I was 20, but was out again once I deployed to Iraq in '04.

Am living with my mom now, but I moved in with her after my dad passed away last year because she couldn't afford to pay for the house on her own, and I didn't want her to lose 15 years of paying into the property.

I moved out to go to college, came back home that summer, got thrown out of the house that fall, then after spending about a year basically homeless, talked my father into letting me move back home. Got myself straightened out, a decent job, then moved out for the last time when I was 21.

I was 17 when I moved out of the house. Back in 2001, I got laid off 3x in a year (what a shitty year that was...) and moved back in for 3 months, and have been out ever since.

My parents left me to live overseas or I would of stayed.

So technically I never moved out, I got abandoned.

At the age of 23...can I move back in now? I could afford A LOT more toys if I didn't have a mortgage.

I started moving out at around 18 when I was going to college.
I didn't really consider myself fully moved out until I moved to Austin at 20.

I just turned 22 and I'll be stuck with the parents for at least 1-2 years. I kinda didn't do jack shit for a year after high school, and then when I started going to college I went for a semester.. then dropped.. then went back.. and dropped.. Now I have to pay the price until I get enough cash in the bank to leave.

19 went to the Army. Had to wait 6 months for my opening. Otherwise would have been out sooner. Ran away at 16 but they drug my ass back home, don't know why, they never wanted me there they just didn't want me off galavanting either.

When I went to university @ 18. My parents would have had no problems with me staying and had we lived in the same town or close to when I was going to school, I coulda stayed home.

I was a good kid and respectful of my parents and enjoy their company, so other than enjoying the "single stuff", living with them if I had to to save money or what not would not have been an issue.

I was 16 but my friends couldn't handle the rent like I could so I was home before the year was up. I moved home a bit before moving in with my girlfriend and her family. We ended up staying there for a while till we bought our house.

College doesn't count as moving out if you aren't paying for it yourself and don't have to come home when the college shuts down for holidays.

College doesn't count as moving out if you aren't paying for it yourself.

I have a list of crappy jobs I had to do to ensure I could keep paying for rent. While my mom helped where she could (and so did some government waivers because my mom did not make much money) she did not cover everything.

My first apartment was five girls in a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom and I was paying over $400 a month. :panic:

Okay, then my time frame still applies

My parent's house has always been open for me or my brothers to stay if we need to....my brothers took more advantage of that than I did. I think my oldest brother finally stopped living with them for the last time about 3 years ago

When I graduated from High School I moved out to go to college, but was back during the summer. I was 18. I got a med discharge from the Army and couldn't afford college (I was going to University of Akron, out of state tuition FTL) so I moved back home to save money to go to college here. Lived at home for a while, bounced back and forth between Jacksonville and the Keys for a while. I'd be back in Jax for a semester at a time, and I'd live with my parents then because I couldn't find an apartment for that short a time frame. While I was in the Keys I was living on my own. Lived with friends for a while too, here and in the Keys. It helped me out quite a bit because I was able to pay cash for a lot of things, like both my bikes and my truck, so I have no debt and few bills. I am renting a room from my brother now because it works for the short term stuff, because I am still bouncing around, except now I might be moving to california. So I was out for four years, then home for a few months at a time from the time I was 22 until a few months ago. I'm 26 now.

moved out the day before my 23rd bday, so several months after i graduated college. Moved to Florida and came back a few months later when i found out my dad's cancer came back. Stayed to take care of him until I got married at 25 (moved 2 blocks away), and finally left NYC again after he passed away.

Funny thing is my dad never wanted me to leave and if he had his way, he would want us all the live in the same house. My mom to this days still nags at me to come home. Tells me i can make more money in NYC, I don't think she realizes that there is a recession there too, the taxes are higher and the cost of living sucks.

That sounds wildly like my situation at 17 except for the military and get out part. My parents were crabby I preferred to work instead of spend quality family time so they made me start paying rent and bills in addition to my car, insurance, cell phone, etc. Getting married and moving out on my own was no different to me really than living at home.

Live with Mom until after HS graduation, then moved to Dad's. I was there until I was 21, moved in with my b/f. By 22, I was back to Dad's. But this point he re-married and psyco step mom had a fit, threatened divorce, etc. So he helped me with an apt for the next year or so until I got on my feel.
Now I live in a house, but the rent goes to my Mom since she owns it but doesn't live her.

So really, I kind of still live at home since Mom is my landlord and really doesn't require much in the way of rent money.

I would have lived with Dad for much longer had it not been for my wicked step mother.

Been there I assume? Yea this cocksucker was a piece of work! He was a piece of shit to the nth power! I was actually already living with my Dad's girlfriend when he died (my Dad was no saint either) because mt st. mom was fucking his friend (the bf) while he was dying of cancer and I found out and bailed (I was 15). Anyway, after he died,my st. mom begged me to come back to help her with this bag of shit because he was beating her ass (it was really hard to feel sorry for this bitch, believe me). Immediately, this guy starts harassing me and finally I convince the st. mom to toss him out. Well,a couple days later he gets drunk and breaks into the house, after we have him hauled away by the police 4 times. I grab the 12 gauge and yell for him to leave, this idiot pulls a knife and advances on me. Luckily for him,my st. mom deflects the gun enough that he wasn't killed but he was missing a significant amount of his knee. So this idiot takes him back after he got out of the hospital and I split.

I graduated HS at 17 in NJ and came to FL to go to school. I'm still a dependent of my parents for tax purposes (and so I can keep their health insurance as long as possible), but I haven't lived at home since I came to school. I spent my 1st year in the dorms, then moved into apartments off campus. I'm graduating in 3 weeks!!! and Phil and I are moving to NY. So I don't plan on going back at all.

Eh,I know people who have had it much, much worse... When I was a Big Brother, one kid I had,had a Mom that was a heroine/crack addict and would have sex with various dealers for drugs. I would literally pick the kid up and wade through trash,to find a 10 year old little girl home all alone since the night before. I would have the kid all day and the "mother" wouldn't even know/care where the kid was. When I dropped the child off there might be two or three "thugs" hanging out in the trailer. It was fucking pathetic.

Stayed there in the summers for two years after high school, left for the Air Force when I was 20, got my own place immediately after moving back to town at 28, moved back in with my parents for 9 months at the age of 34 while looking for a house, then finally moved out 8 days after my 35th birthday. I swore I'd never live with them again when I was in my 20's, but had gotten myself into a bit of debt and couldn't afford a place (or find what I was looking for) right away. I actually settled for less than I really wanted because I desperately needed to get out of my parent's house!!

A friend of mine's brother has never moved out of his parent's house. He's in his 40's.
